Data Assimilation in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP)

Doctoral programme in Environmental Engineering from the UPC presents a research seminar entitled "Data Assimilation in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP)" by Mr Pau Escribà. Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET).

Pau Escribà works as a meteorologist at the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET). In 2002 he graduated in Physics at University of Barcelona (UB) where then he started working in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) issues at the Department of Meteorology and Astronomy.  In 2004 he joined the NWP Predictability Group of AEMET in Madrid and since 2008 he works at the Delegation of AEMET in Catalonia as a public servant. Currently his job mainly involves setting up a proper methodology for generating the initial perturbations of the future Short Range Ensemble Prediction System at AEMET (AEMET-g-SREPS), based on the non-hydrostatic HARMONIE model. In addition, he works in the HIRLAM consortium, he has participated in several national and international conferences and he has some scientific publications on NWP issues.

The main purpose of this seminar is to undertake a general introduction of Data Assimilation in NWP. The talk will start defining the problem, the optimal combination of background and observations. Then it will be presented the concept of cost function and its different terms. Finally, two different state-of-the-art methodologies for resolving the problem will be given, the 4-Dimensional Variational (4DVAR) and the Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter (LETKF).

The seminar will take place on Friday May 17, 2013 at 11am at the Vertex Building, room VS218. Plaza Eusebi Guell, 6, Barcelona.
