SPECIAL DOCTORAL AWARDS
(2015-2016 GRADUATION YEAR)

 

By virtue of the provisions of the Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies, approved in Governing Council Decision 117/2017 on 13 July 2017,

IT IS HEREBY AGREED

to promote the call for Special Doctoral Awards for theses defended in the 2015-2016 academic year, in accordance with the following

RULES:

  1. The call is open to holders of any of the UPC's doctoral degrees who enrolled for the thesis deposit in the 2015-2016 academic year and were awarded the cum laude distinction. Candidates may apply themselves or the academic committees of the doctoral programmes may apply.

    With the aim of raising the profile of theses online and fostering and increasing the impact factor of citations of their authors, all theses submitted in this call will be published in the open-access institutional repository TDX.
  2. Each thesis submitted will be assigned to one of the following subject areas: 'Architecture, Urbanism and Building Construction'; 'Sciences'; 'Civil Engineering'; 'ICT Engineering' or 'Industrial Engineering'.
  3. In this call, the following maximum number of Special Doctoral Awards may be granted in each subject area.
      • Architecture, Urbanism and Building Construction: 7
      • Sciences: 5
      • Civil Engineering: 7
      • ICT Engineering: 11
      • Industrial Engineering: 12
  4. On 5 March 2018, an application form form will be activated on the Doctoral School website for candidates to apply online before 4 April 2018. The following documents must be submitted:
      • Documents certifying the scientific output stemming directly from the doctoral thesis, in order of priority: publications (including the impact factor and quartile), patents, applications, developments, participation in scientific events, etc.
      • Certificates for other merits such as grants and prizes awarded to the candidate in relation to the doctoral thesis.
      • If the thesis has not been deposited in TDX, a statement by the author and the determination of his or her rights (TDX statement); all of the details must be filled in and two copies must be signed.
        NOTA: the accuracy of the information and documents submitted is the exclusive responsibility of candidates. Providing inaccurate or false information constitutes an offence.
  5. The Doctoral School will publish the provisional list of candidates on its website on 6 April 2018, when an appeal period lasting 10 working days begins.
  6. The academic committees of the doctoral programmes may propose candidates during the appeal period.
  7. The Doctoral School will publish the definitive list of candidates on its website on 16 May 2018.The academic committees of the doctoral programmes at the UPC, with the support of the Doctoral School, will issue a report on the quality of the output stemming from the thesis, which is guaranteed by the publications, patents, applications, developments, participations in scientific events, etc., of the interested parties. Deadline: 27 May 2018. The Standing Committee of the Doctoral School will appoint a jury for each of the subject areas. These juries must be composed of five members and two substitutes, all of whom must have doctoral degrees and proven research experience. In no case may the supervisor or tutor of any of the candidates be part of the juries. The juries may seek out experts who hold doctoral degrees when the specific nature of the subject of some of the theses or the number of theses submitted requires it.The juries will consider the scientific, technical and artistic output and the research that are a direct consequence of the doctoral thesis and will issue their deliberations in a report no later than 22 July 2018.
  8. The Standing Committee of the Doctoral School will approve the provisional list of winners for each subject area on 25 July 2018 and the list will be published on the Doctoral School website on 26 July 2018.
  9. The Doctoral School will communicate the results of the juries' deliberations to all of the candidates, who may then make any observations and appeals that they feel are necessary in the 12 working days following the day of the notification.
  10. After this deadline, and once any appeals have been resolved, the Standing Committee of the Doctoral School will rule on the 2018 call for Special Doctoral Awards and notify the general secretary of the UPC, who will in turn inform the Governing Council of the decision.
  11. The Doctoral School will publish the definitive list of winners on its website on 26 September 2018.
  12. The Governing Council of the UPC will ratify the definitive list of winners on 25 October 2018.
  13. The awards ceremony will take place during the welcome session for new doctoral students on 9 November 2018.
