Abstract:

Watermarking has potential applications in communications, particularly in the context of digital media and data transmission. Here are some ways in which watermarking can be applied in communications:

  • Content Authentication: Watermarking can be used to verify the authenticity and integrity of digital content during transmission. By embedding a watermark into the data, the recipient can check whether the received content has been tampered with or altered during transmission.
  • Digital Rights Management (DRM): Watermarking is commonly used in DRM systems to protect copyrighted content such as videos, music, and ebooks. Watermarks can be embedded in the content to track and enforce usage rights, ensuring that users only access and use the content as allowed by the rights' holder.
  • Fingerprinting and Tracking: Watermarking can be used to uniquely identify digital media files. This can be useful for tracking the distribution and usage of content, enabling content owners to trace the source of unauthorized distribution or sharing.
  • Data Hiding: In some cases, watermarking can be used for covert communication. By embedding information within a digital file, such as an image or audio clip, one can transmit hidden messages or metadata without arousing suspicion.
  • Network Traffic Analysis: Watermarking can be employed in network traffic analysis and monitoring. Watermarks can be embedded in network packets or data streams to assist in identifying and tracking specific types of traffic, which can be useful for network management and security purposes.
  • Authentication and Authorization: Watermarks can be used in authentication and authorization processes for secure communications. For example, watermarking can be employed in access control systems to verify the authenticity of devices or users attempting to access a network or service.
  • Anti-Counterfeiting in Communication Devices: Watermarking can be applied to hardware components and communication devices to prevent counterfeiting. These watermarks can help manufacturers and consumers verify the authenticity of products and components.
  • Protecting Against Replay Attacks: it can also play a role in securing communications by differentiating between original and replayed signals (inserting a time code). This can be important in ensuring the integrity of data exchanged between communicating parties.


Nowadays, watermarking can increase its popularity as a way to differentiate artificial generated signals from those acquired in the “real world”.
In this seminar, the author will provide an overview of watermarking and its applications.
  


Speakers:

Marcos Faúndez-Zanuy was born in Barcelona, Spain. He received the B.Sc. degree in Telecommunication in 1993 and the Ph.D. degree in 1998, both from the Polytechnic University of Catalunya. He is now Full Professor (catedrático) at Tecnocampus Mataró and heads the Signal Processing Group there (Grup de recerca consolidat GRC, since 2009.

From 2009 till 2018 he has been the dean of Escola Universitaria Politecnica de Mataró (Polytechnic University of Catalunya till 2015, Pompeu Fabra University after 2015). From 2010 till february 2020 he was the head of research at Tecnocampus.

His research interests lie in the fields of biometrics applied to security and health. He was the initiator and Chairman of the European COST action 277 “Nonlinear speech processing'', and the secretary of COST action 2102 “Cross-Modal Analysis of Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication”.
He is author of more than 200 papers indexed in ISI Journal citation report, more than 100 conference papers, around 10 books, and responsible for 10 national and European research projects.
