The objective of the doctoral programme in Applied Mathematics (hereafter, DAM) is to offer training in research techniques in the field of mathematics, which takes shape in the form of formulating and drafting a doctoral thesis. A doctoral thesis is understood to be research work that contains original contributions that are apt to be published in the peer-reviewed communication channels that exist for disseminating quality scientific output.

The programme has an interdisciplinary nature in the sense that research into both the more theoretical aspects of mathematics and research aimed at solving problems related to technology are welcomed. In fact, the programme has as another of its objective to provide advanced mathematical training and education to graduates from other disciplines.

The DAM collaborates with various mathematics research groups. The UPC focuses mainly on studies related to engineering and architecture, and it is one of the Spanish universities with the most mathematics professors, boasting around 200 in the Department of Mathematics alone, plus those maths professors working in other departments, including Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Sciences, and Computer Architecture. Thus, since its foundation, the DAM is and has been the natural offspring of the UPC’s strength in mathematics.

The DAM itself is structured around five lines of research

1. Algebra and geometry
2. Discrete and algorithmic mathematics
3. Modelling in engineering and biomedical sciences
4. Differential equations

5. Scientific computing

These lines of research reflect the main areas of focus of the mathematics research groups at the UPC.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics (FME, by its Catalan acronym) is the body that oversees the DAM, and it serves as a natural meeting point for the UPC’s mathematics community. The FME also offers undergraduate- and master’s-level studies in mathematics, ensuring a quality education in mathematics at all levels. It is also worth mentioning the Barcelona Graduate School of Mathematics (BGSMath, https://bgsmath.cat/), an organisation where research groups, researchers and especially doctoral candidates in the field of mathematics meet. Four universities and the Centre for Mathematics Research are involved with the School, and mathematics researchers from the UPC contribute at all levels.

The programme coordinator, the programme’s Academic Committee and a technical representative from the FME’s administrative staff handle the management of the DAM. The programme’s Academic Committee is made up of the coordinator, the dean of the FME, the director of the Department of Mathematics or the person whom he/she delegates, a professor from each of the five lines of research, the head of services and management of the FME or the person whom he/she delegates and a student representative (see https://appliedmathematics.postgrau.upc.edu/en/thesis/academic-committee). The programme coordinator is appointed by the dean of the FME and must be approved by the Academic Committee.

This is not a closed list of degrees. Each applicant will be assessed based on whether the education he/she received in mathematics in his/her undergraduate and master’s studies is appropriate for a doctoral programme in applied mathematics.

Output profile

Doctoral candidates who complete a doctoral degree will have acquired the following competencies, which are needed to carry out quality research (Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January, which regulates official doctoral studies):

a) A systematic understanding of the field of study and a mastery of the research skills and methods related to the field.
b) An ability to conceive, design or create, put into practice and adopt a substantial process of research or creation.
c) An ability to contribute to pushing back the frontiers of knowledge through original research.
d) A capacity for critical analysis and an ability to assess and summarise new and complex ideas.
e) An ability to communicate with the academic and scientific community and with society in general as regards their fields of knowledge in the manner and languages that are typical of the international scientific community to which they belong.
f) An ability to foster scientific, technological, social, artistic and cultural progress in academic and professional contexts within a knowledge-based society.

The award of a doctoral degree must equip the graduate for work in a variety of settings, especially those requiring creativity and innovation. Doctoral graduates must have at least acquired the personal skills needed to:

a) Develop in contexts in which there is little specific information.
b) Find the key questions that must be answered to solve a complex problem.
c) Design, create, develop and undertake original, innovative projects in their field.
d) Work as part of a team and independently in an international or multidisciplinary context.
e) Integrate knowledge, deal with complexity and make judgements with limited information.
f) Offer criticism on and intellectually defend solutions.

Finally, with respect to competencies, doctoral students must:
a) have acquired advanced knowledge at the frontier of their discipline and demonstrated, in the context of internationally recognised scientific research, a deep, detailed and well-grounded understanding of theoretical and practical issues and scientific methodology in one or more research fields;
b) have made an original and significant contribution to scientific research in their field of expertise that has been recognised as such by the international scientific community;
c) have demonstrated that they are capable of designing a research project that serves as a framework for carrying out a critical analysis and assessment of imprecise situations, in which they are able to apply their contributions, expertise and working method to synthesise new and complex ideas that yield a deeper knowledge of the research context in which they work;
d) have developed sufficient autonomy to set up, manage and lead innovative research teams and projects and scientific collaborations (both national and international) within their subject area, in multidisciplinary contexts and, where appropriate, with a substantial element of knowledge transfer;
e) have demonstrated that they are able to carry out their research activity in a socially responsible manner and with scientific integrity;
f) have demonstrated, within their specific scientific context, that they are able to make cultural, social or technological advances and promote innovation in all areas within a knowledge-based society;
g) have demonstrated that they are able to participate in scientific discussions at the international level in their field of expertise and disseminate the results of their research activity to audiences of all kinds.

Duration of studies and dedication regime

Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, counted from the date of first enrolment in the relevant programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is seven years from the date of first enrolment in the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. To calculate these periods, the date of deposit is considered to be the date on which the thesis is made publicly available for review.

If a doctoral candidate has a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%, the maximum period of study is six years for full-time students and nine years for part-time students.

For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years.

When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the requirement to complete this minimum period of study.

Temporary disability leave and leave for the birth of a child, adoption or fostering for the purposes of adoption, temporary foster care, risk during pregnancy or infant feeding, gender violence and any other situation provided for in current regulations do not count towards these periods. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which must inform the Doctoral School.

Doctoral candidates may request periods of temporary withdrawal from the programme for up to a total of two years. Requests must be justified and addressed to the academic committee responsible for the programme, which will decide whether or not to grant the candidate's request.

Extension of studies
If a doctoral candidate has not applied to deposit their thesis before the expiry of the deadlines specified in the previous section, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may, at the request of the doctoral candidate, authorise an extension of this deadline of one year under the conditions specified for the doctoral programme in question.

Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:

  • The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate not having completed their annual enrolment or applied for a temporary interruption.
  • The doctoral candidate not having formalised annual enrolment on the day after the end of the authorisation to temporarily interrupt or withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate receiving a negative reassessment after the deadline set by the academic committee of the doctoral programme to remedy the deficiencies that led to a previous negative assessment.
  • The doctoral candidate having been the subject of disciplinary proceedings leading to their suspension or permanent exclusion from the UPC.
  • A refusal to authorise the extensions applied for, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.3 of these regulations.
  • The doctoral candidate not having submitted the research plan in the period established in Section 8.2 of these regulations.
  • The maximum period of study for the doctoral degree having ended, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.4 of these regulations.

Dismissal from the programme means that the doctoral candidate cannot continue studying at the UPC and that their academic record will be closed. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission, and the committee must reevaluate the candidate in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.

A doctoral candidate who has been dismissed due to having exceeded the time limit for completing doctoral studies or due to an unsatisfactory assessment may not be Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Page 17 of 33 admitted to the same doctoral programme until at least two years have elapsed from the date of dismissal, as provided for in sections 3.4 and 9.2 of these regulations.

Access requirements

As a rule, applicants must hold a Spanish bachelor's degree or equivalent and a Spanish master's degree or equivalent, provided they have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits on the two degrees (Royal Decree 43/2015, of 2 February).

Applicants who meet one or more of the following conditions are also eligible for admission:

a) Holders of official Spanish degrees or equivalent Spanish qualifications, provided they have passed 300 ECTS credits in total and they can prove they have reached Level 3 in the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education.
b) Holders of degrees awarded in foreign education systems in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), which do not require homologation, who can prove that they have reached Level 7 in the European Qualifications Framework, provided the degree makes the holder eligible for admission to doctoral studies in the country in which it was awarded.
c) Holders of degrees awarded in a country that does not belong to the EHEA, which do not require homologation, on the condition that the University is able to verify that the degree is of a level equivalent to that of official university master's degrees in Spain and that it makes the holder eligible for admission to doctoral studies in the country in which it was awarded.
d) Holders of another doctoral degree.
e) Holders of an official university qualification who, having been awarded a post as a trainee in the entrance examination for specialised medical training, have successfully completed at least two years of training leading to an official degree in a health sciences specialisation.

Admission criteria and merits assessment

During the admission process, the following elements will be considered (with their associated weights):

• Academic transcript from the applicant’s undergraduate and master’s programmes (70%).

• CV (10%).

• Motivation letter and/or personal interview (10%).

• Two letters of recommendation from professors/researchers (10%).

These criteria will be published on the programme’s web page. The final score will be used as the admission criteria in the case that demand exceeds the number of available seats.

There is no provision for entrance exams or any specific entrance tests. If candidates’ backgrounds in mathematics or the subject of the candidates’ doctoral theses so require, they will be required to take bridging courses in the master’s programme in Advanced Mathematics and Mathematical Engineering (MAMME), the official master’s programme offered by the FME that is associated with this doctoral programme.

Training complements

The academic committee for the programme may require that doctoral students pass specific bridging courses. In such cases, the committee will keep track of the bridging courses completed and establish appropriate criteria to limit their duration. The courses could involve training in research or transversal education, but in no case will candidates be required to enrol in 60 or more ECTS credits.

Depending on the doctoral student activity report, the programme’s Academic Committee may propose measures, in addition to those established by current regulations, that would disassociate candidates who do not meet the established requisites.

Additionally, students who require it based on their previous education and the subject of their thesis, will have to take courses from the master’s programme in Advanced Mathematics and Mathematical Engineering (MAMME) offered by the School of Mathematics and Statistics. Monitoring and evaluation of the doctoral student

Procedure for the preparation and defense of the research plan

Doctoral candidates must submit a research plan, which will be included in their doctoral student activity report, before the end of the first year. The plan may be improved over the course of the doctoral degree. It must be endorsed by the tutor and the supervisor, and it must include the method that is to be followed and the aims of the research.

At least one of these annual assessments will include a public presentation and defence of the research plan and work done before a committee composed of three doctoral degree holders, which will be conducted in the manner determined by each academic committee. The examination committee awards a Pass or Fail mark. A Pass mark is a prerequisite for continuing on the doctoral programme. Doctoral candidates awarded a Fail mark must submit a new research plan for assessment by the academic committee of the doctoral programme within six months.

The committee assesses the research plan every year, in addition to all of the other activities in the doctoral student activity report. Doctoral candidates who are awarded two consecutive Fail marks for the research plan will be obliged to definitely withdraw from the programme.

If they change the subject of their thesis, they must submit a new research plan.

Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director

The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.

The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.

PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.

The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.

A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.

Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.

If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.

The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.

For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.

Permanence

    Thesis abstract: Optimal control theory provides a framework to determine optimal inputs for mechanical systems modeled as initial value problems. The resulting minimisation problem may be solved with known direct and indirect methods. This PhD thesis focuses on the development of novel structure preserving discretisation techniques for optimal control problems, with application to the mechanical systems and the locomotion of limbless organisms. Firstly, our research focuses on developing structure preserving time-integration schemes in the context of optimal control theory. We propose a novel discretisation that preserves the control Hamiltonian, an integral of the analytical Euler-Lagrange equations of the optimal control problem (OCP). Additionally, we introduce a discretisation technique that is capable to preserve control angular momentum maps resulting from the rotational symmetry of the underlying OCP. Next, we investigate the stability of numerical solutions when optimisation problems are discretised in time. We show that the numerical stability and the presence of numerical oscillations depends not only on the time-step size, but also on the parameters of the objective functional, which measures the amount of control input. Furthermore, we demonstrate with an illustrative example that these findings also carry over non-linear OCPs. Secondly, the numerical solution of the discretised OCP is tested with two strategies: monolithic and staggered approaches. The monolithic strategy solves all the optimality conditions for all time-steps as a single system of non-linear equations, and relies on a Newton-Raphson scheme, which guarantees quadratic rates of convergence in the vicinity of the optimal solution trajectory. The staggered strategy is based on the Forward-Backward Sweep Method (FBSM), where state and adjoint equations are solved separately, and the control equations provides an update of the control variables. Additionally, we device a hybrid solution strategy which combines the advantages of a conventional gradient-based FBSM with the individual Newton-based solution procedures once the solution is close to the optimal trajectory. Finally, we present a comprehensive framework for modeling the locomotion of limbless organisms on frictional substrates using both 2D and 3D continuum models based on Finite Element (FE) methods. For the 2D continuum model, muscle activity is simulated with an active stress approach, while the 3D continuum problem incorporates a multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient, which allows mimicking a broad range of locomotion patterns in 3D contractile elastic solids. We propose a two-field FE formulation based on positions and velocities. Governing partial differential equations are transformed into equivalent time-continuous differential-algebraic equations (DAEs). Next, the optimal locomotion strategies are studied in the framework of optimal control theory. We resort to adjoint-based methods and deduce the first-order optimality conditions, that yield a system of DAEs with two-point end conditions. The resulting discrete first-order optimality conditions form a non-linear programming problem that is solved efficiently with the FBSM. Lastly, some representative numerical examples are provided to compare the numerical performance of the developed computational framework for limbless locomotion. We evaluate the efficiency of structure preserving schemes and the robustness of monolithic, staggered and hybrid strategies. Our numerical experiments show that the predictions of the developed limbless locomotion are capable of simulating distinct locomotion patterns, and that the monolithic, staggered, and hybrid schemes yield very similar solutions. However, the hybrid approaches become more advantageous with regard to the computationtime when the time-step decreases or the size of the problem increases.

    Thesis abstract: In this thesis we investigate various aspects of the dynamics of Hamiltonian vector fields in singular symplectic manifolds. We concentrate on two questions: first, we investigate a generalization of the Arnold conjecture in the setting of singular symplectic geometry. Second, we explore constructions for integrable systems in this context. In Chapter 2 we provide the background material required for this thesis. We start by delving into the theory of symplectic geometry. Then we present the Arnold conjecture, which asserts that there is a lower bound on the number of 1-periodic orbits for a non-degenerate Hamiltonian system, and that this lower bound can be formulated strictly in topological terms. We also present a tool used in the investigation of this conjecture: Floer theory. We explain some notions of Poisson geometry before we explore a notion fundamental to this thesis: that of a b-m-symplectic manifold. These are manifolds with a structure that is symplectic almost everywhere but “blows up” at a hypersurface, which we call the singular hypersurface. We lay out some techniques used in the study of b-m-symplectic manifolds, with an emphasis on a procedure called "desingularization". Finally, we give a summary of the theory of integrable systems and the study of their singular points. In Chapter 3 we investigate the dynamical behaviour of certain vector fields in b-m-symplectic geometry, coming from b-m-Hamiltonians. We focus on the study of their dynamics in a neighbourhood of the singular hypersurface, and find a family of b-m-Hamiltonians where a version of the Arnold conjecture can be formulated. Then, we explore new aspects of the desingularization procedure in relation to the b-m-Hamiltonian dynamics, and provide some techniques that allow us to relate these dynamics to those of classical symplectic geometry. We conclude with two results yielding partial versions of the Arnold conjecture for b-m-Hamiltonian vector fields. In Chapter 4 we show the existence of a Floer homology for b-m-symplectic manifolds. This we manage through an investigation of the Floer equation for the family of b-m-Hamiltonians presented in Chapter 3. In Chapter 5 we introduce the notion of the classes of b-integrable and b-semitoric systems. We study the features of b-semitoric systems using some interesting examples and the investigation of their singular points.

    Thesis abstract: The BMS group appears as an infinite-dimensional group of isometries of asymptotically flat spacetimes first introduced by Bondi, Metzner, van der Burg, and Sachs in 1962. This group has gained interest recently due to the invariance of the gravitational S-matrix under these transformations and the existence of a connection between Weinberg's soft gravitons theorems and Ward identities of BMS supertranslations, and also due to the relation between flat space holography and BMS. Despite being originally related to gravitational physics, the BMS group and its Lie algebra can be realized in free flat field theories by means of the Fourier modes of the field. One of these realizations, which we refer to as the canonical realization, can be built for a free scalar field in Minkowski space using a generalization of the usual Poincar\'e charges. In this Thesis, we study in detail the canonical realization to uncover the expression of the infinite-dimensional conserved charges associated with BMS transformations in d=3 spacetime. The final expression consists of an integral transformation in terms of derivatives of polyharmonic Green functions. We later explore a particle non-linear realization of BMS using the Maurer-Cartan form to find an infinite set of BMS coordinates that are constrained by gauge transformations. We construct the corresponding Poincaré transformation generators in terms of these infinite-dimensional coordinates and the associated momenta. Finally, we study the extension of BMS with conformal transformations in the massless theory. We conclude that it is possible to extend the algebra to a Weyl-BMS realization by defining new superdilatation operators, but the incorporation of special conformal transformations results in an infinite tower of new operators that need further study. The work presented in this Thesis could be of some use for the study of flat-space holography since it describes a field theory in three-dimensional space-time that could act as the dual to asymptotic flat gravity theory in the bulk.

    Thesis abstract: The goal of this thesis has been to represent the p-adic valuation of the special values of p-adic L-functions via Euler Characteristics using different cohomology theories in various settings. More specifically, homotopy theoretic invariants such as the K(1)-local K-theory spectrum have been used to describe these values in the setting of commutative and noncommutative totally real fields and also in some cases for imaginary quadratic fields. The most successful case has been in the commutative and totally real case, where the padic valuation of the Deligne-Ribet p-adic L-function can now be understood using étale cohomology, K(1)-local K-theory, and also as the fiber of the (K(1)-local) cyclotomic trace map, therefore extending the work of Hesselholt, which only covered F = Q. In addition to this, the foundation has been layed to extend these results in other directions, such as in the case of function fields, or more precisely, to the case of Abelian varieties with semistable reduction over function fields.

    Thesis abstract: Many real world situations involve a set of players (or agents) negotiating and taking a decision among a set of options an expecting a final result, e.g. a vote to pass a bill or a law, making decisions in committees, resource allocations, rankings of athletes or teams in sports subjected to evaluation by judges, grading aggregations, etc. The rules that define the game are crucial for the strategies that the players will adopt and the final outcome of the game. Cooperative Game Theory studies these rules and the relation among the players. In this Thesis we achieve the following goals: We enumerate several important subclasses of simple games in terms of classes of equivalent players and minimal winning models (contributing to the so-called Dedekind’s problem). This objective is achieved through the parameterization of the game as a matrix and a vector satisfying algebraic properties. We axiomatize subclasses of resolute majority functions and enumerate some of them. We characterize the Felsenthal power index and generalize several properties related to this index previously defined for weighted games, and we show a family of indexes satisfying these compelling properties as well an incompatibility result among some of these coherent properties.

Quality
