Duration of studies and dedication regime
Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, counted from the date of first enrolment in the relevant programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is seven years from the date of first enrolment in the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. To calculate these periods, the date of deposit is considered to be the date on which the thesis is made publicly available for review.
If a doctoral candidate has a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%, the maximum period of study is six years for full-time students and nine years for part-time students.
For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years.
When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the requirement to complete this minimum period of study.
Temporary disability leave and leave for the birth of a child, adoption or fostering for the purposes of adoption, temporary foster care, risk during pregnancy or infant feeding, gender violence and any other situation provided for in current regulations do not count towards these periods. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which must inform the Doctoral School.
Doctoral candidates may request periods of temporary withdrawal from the programme for up to a total of two years. Requests must be justified and addressed to the academic committee responsible for the programme, which will decide whether or not to grant the candidate's request.
Extension of studies
If a doctoral candidate has not applied to deposit their thesis before the expiry of the deadlines specified in the previous section, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may, at the request of the doctoral candidate, authorise an extension of this deadline of one year under the conditions specified for the doctoral programme in question.
Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:
- The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
- The doctoral candidate not having completed their annual enrolment or applied for a temporary interruption.
- The doctoral candidate not having formalised annual enrolment on the day after the end of the authorisation to temporarily interrupt or withdraw from the programme.
- The doctoral candidate receiving a negative reassessment after the deadline set by the academic committee of the doctoral programme to remedy the deficiencies that led to a previous negative assessment.
- The doctoral candidate having been the subject of disciplinary proceedings leading to their suspension or permanent exclusion from the UPC.
- A refusal to authorise the extensions applied for, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.3 of these regulations.
- The doctoral candidate not having submitted the research plan in the period established in Section 8.2 of these regulations.
- The maximum period of study for the doctoral degree having ended, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.4 of these regulations.
Dismissal from the programme means that the doctoral candidate cannot continue studying at the UPC and that their academic record will be closed. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission, and the committee must reevaluate the candidate in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.
A doctoral candidate who has been dismissed due to having exceeded the time limit for completing doctoral studies or due to an unsatisfactory assessment may not be Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Page 17 of 33 admitted to the same doctoral programme until at least two years have elapsed from the date of dismissal, as provided for in sections 3.4 and 9.2 of these regulations.

Enrolment period
Applicants’ should first enrol after receiving their admission decision, if this occurs after the standard enrolment period.
Monitoring and evaluation of the doctoral student
Procedure for the preparation and defense of the research plan
Doctoral candidates must submit a research plan, which will be included in their doctoral student activity report, before the end of the first year. The plan may be improved over the course of the doctoral degree. It must be endorsed by the tutor and the supervisor, and it must include the method that is to be followed and the aims of the research.
At least one of these annual assessments will include a public presentation and defence of the research plan and work done before a committee composed of three doctoral degree holders, which will be conducted in the manner determined by each academic committee. The examination committee awards a Pass or Fail mark. A Pass mark is a prerequisite for continuing on the doctoral programme. Doctoral candidates awarded a Fail mark must submit a new research plan for assessment by the academic committee of the doctoral programme within six months.
The committee assesses the research plan every year, in addition to all of the other activities in the doctoral student activity report. Doctoral candidates who are awarded two consecutive Fail marks for the research plan will be obliged to definitely withdraw from the programme.
If they change the subject of their thesis, they must submit a new research plan.
Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director
The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.
The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.
PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.
The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.
A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.
Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.
If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.
The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.
For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.
Permanence

Thesis abstract: This doctoral thesis delves into the user experience of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology in architectural pedagogy, through four in-depth case studies. This research proposes an educational innovation approach that integrates the BIM methodology in interuniversity workshops implementing Globally Distributed Teams (GDT) and the Project Based Learning (PBL) approach, with the objective of improving the educational experience and training students for effective collaboration in Architecture. Engineering and Construction Industry (AEC).The interuniversity workshops were held with the participation of students and professors from prestigious architecture schools in Mexico and Spain: the Metropolitan Autonomous University of Azcapotzalco (UAM-Azc), the Barcelona Higher Technical School of Architecture (ETSAB) and the Higher Technical School of La Salle. Architecture (URL). Likewise, other renowned institutions such as the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) and the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) were integrated. For four consecutive years, participants tackled social facility design challenges, including a First Contact Family Clinic (2020), a Cultural Center (2021), an Intermediate Therapy Center for COVID-19 (2022), and a Refugee Camp . , Ukraine Crisis (2023).The research employed a mixed methodological approach that combined quantitative analysis of data collected through surveys with qualitative analysis of data derived from interviews and participant observation. With this approach, this research demonstrates that it improves the user experience through collaboration and exchange between students located in distant geographical locations, while seeking to identify best practices in the use of BIM to enrich the training of future architects. in the AEC industry. It is projected that the findings of these interuniversity workshops with GDT and PBL will be very useful for both educational institutions as a methodological example.

Thesis abstract: The thesis reveals new corporate and architectural identity relationship developments in the twenty-first century. The study unpacks that relationship by examining digital corporations' approach to exploiting architectural design to reflect their corporate identity. Corporate identity expresses a set of values that corporations attempt to engage to substantiate themselves. They do this using several means, one of which is through having an architectural identity. Some corporate facilities have characteristic features in their architectural design, such as — but exclusive to — forms, space, and materials. One of the aims of these characteristic features is to visually express the company's values visually, thereby giving them substance. This thesis proposes that the architectural identity of the five largest digital companies use design strategies to relate to green values such as sustainability, environmental responsibility, and nature. This thesis uses a case study format to examine the characteristic features of corporate buildings over time and recognises the values these corporations are attempting to project. Additionally, it studies the influences of this strategy. This study presents several case studies that exemplify how corporations have exploited architectural design to reflect their corporate identity, using a historical timeline. Before the Industrial Revolution, we argue that the first corporations were entities emerging from institutions like the monarchy (represented in Kings), the church (represented in clerics), and armies; these three powers were the main spheres of expression and identity in life during that period. These powers exploited architectural design in their early facilities, such as palaces, temples, and castles. These institutions gave substance to their values, expressing their social importance in materiality. Their core value was displaying power, which these early institutions were keen to communicate to the public, and they expressed these values using characteristic features in their buildings. After the Industrial Revolution, developments occurred in various spheres of life, which led to the emergence of new socially important powers. These new corporations included institutions and companies devoted to commerce, sports, art, and education. These corporations have identities and values, like the old entities before the Industrial Revolution. Therefore, these institutions also used various means to communicate their identity and values to the public. Like the pre-industrial powers, these new powers used architectural design to reflect their values through characteristic features in their facilities. In the post-industrial period, these features could include towers, which used the ongoing progress in construction techniques to express power and modernity. The case studies presented in the current century are organised in three phases. The first phase includes studies of various general categories of corporations, including cultural, educational, and commercial. In the second phase, we have selected digital corporations to study in more detail. This is done because digital corporations are now the wealthiest and most powerful institutions globally. Moreover, in the third phase of academic exploration, we have selected one digital corporation to study in greater detail. The rise of digital corporations in the last twenty-five years has been coined as the third industrial Revolution or the Digital Revolution. This study analysed cases from the five most prominent technology companies leading the digital Revolution: Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta (previously Facebook), and Apple. These companies have become important community hubs and impacted many areas of life. Their corporate identities are shifting to keep up with modern values such as environmentalism, innovation, social work environments, and entertainment.

Thesis abstract: Innovation management methodologies (IMMs) have traditionally struggled to balance the need for adaptability with maintaining team motivation throughout dynamic, technology-driven projects. This research introduces Innovation Flow (IF), an adaptive and humanistic innovation management approach grounded in Flow Theory, to address these gaps. The primary objective of this research is to develop and validate a methodology that leverages Generative AI (GenAI) to create Personalized Innovation Techniques (PInnT), enhancing team performance through tailored, motivational frameworks. The study begins with a critical analysis of existing IMMs, identifying their core elements and influencing factors that affect innovation project outcomes, such as team dynamics and organizational culture. An investigation into Innovation Techniques led to the development of a structured framework and classification system, serving as the basis for generating adapted techniques. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis of the thinking methods and techniques used by effective innovation strategies was conducted, resulting in a database designed to elucidate innovative thinking and assist innovators. To further personalize the innovation process, a Project Genetics (PG) Assessment Model was developed, encompassing project parameters, dimensional assessment, genetic profiles, and management implications for personalized techniques. An inventory of innovator profiles was developed, correlating them with the strengths and weaknesses of thinking techniques, and the Team Equilibrium framework was expanded to evaluate innovation Team Profiles (TP). Dynamic goal-oriented project management orientations were established to apply Flow Theory in innovation projects. The methodology of this research employs a mixed-methods research design, combining constructivist grounded theory and quasi-experimental approaches across 28 projects in various educational and professional settings, including healthcare and manufacturing. Data collected through participant observation, digital whiteboards, and interviews were analyzed using grounded theory methods to identify patterns in innovation technique application and team dynamics.A significant contribution of this research is the development of the Innovation Flow GenAI System (PInnT GenAI), a generative AI system designed to generate personalized innovation techniques aligned with team profiles and project genetics. Empirical evidence demonstrates that these personalized techniques, when aligned with team profiles and project challenges, foster sustained engagement and creativity, enabling teams to maintain a flow state conducive to innovation success. The findings show that aligning Innovation Techniques with team profiles increases their efficacy and that flexibility and adaptation in the process correlate with the team’s ability to sustain their efforts and achieve the project’s main goals. The integration of GenAI within the IF approach enhances the flexibility and precision of technique generation, automating and optimizing the selection process to meet unique project demands. These findings highlight the critical role of psychological safety, team autonomy, and leadership dynamics in achieving high innovation outcomes. By emphasizing humanistic elements, particularly through Team Profiles and Project Genetics, IF places the team at the core of the innovation process, differentiating it from traditional IMMs. This research contributes to the broader field of innovation management by providing a scalable, AI-enhanced framework for innovation management that is adaptable across various industries and team structures, addressing both technical and human factors that influence innovation success.

Thesis abstract: The subject of the thesis focuses on landscape, including how it relates to gardens, architecture, the environment, and how different areas are used over space and time. Natural spaces have a high potential to be developed in the new smart cities, and the fusion of the physical environment and digital information is undergoing a fundamental transition. In this, the composition of the landscape can open the way to the renewal of culture, a characteristic searched in the Victorian era and slightly forgotten after the First World War. The characteristics to be considered in green areas planning to maximize the rising of culture can include the use of the same along the various hours of day and night. In this research, the hypothesis is that parks are positively correlated with the establishment of social activities, and provide the opportunity for promoting the release of stress in a behavioral setting. The implication of this study may assist urban and landscape designers, planners, and architects in creating a sociable green environment. After reviewing existing literature in this field and identifying a scientific gap, a set of theoretical frameworks was conducted to facilitate the grasp of notions developed in this study. Afterward, by describing of implemented methods, the process of applying different procedures was explained, including questionnaires and interviews with key figures in the field. Subsequently, the obtained findings were presented and discussion and conclusions were presented, joined with a simulation project presented within the annexes, to visually express the high potentiality discovered with the research. All this, therefore, can be the basis for further research oriented towards a new type of ecological design. The goal is to guide knowledge and innovation in green design through the use of new technologies, going beyond the process of traditional design production. In envisioning the future of urban parks, the study proposes a transformative direction, advocating for parks to evolve beyond recreational spaces into vital hubs for education, culture, sustainability, and technological innovation. The research, conducted in newly built parks in Barcelona compared to Vancouver's model, offers insights into potential new uses for these spaces. Acknowledging its geographical and historical limitations, the study emphasizes its relevance to contemporary parks, highlighting the need for specific studies to explore how modern technologies can be integrated into historic parks: without compromising their heritage value.

Thesis abstract: Since the 2000s, collaborative housing has gained renewed interest in Europe as a solution to the growing demand for community-oriented living arrangements. This doctoral research focuses on cohousing, a collaborative housing form characterised by community living with self-contained private dwellings and shared spaces. These spaces are designed through a co-design process and self-managed by residents. This study examines the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of the cohousing phenomenon in relation to its architectural design. Cohousing is defined both as an event—a co-design process and a way of living—and as an object—a built artefact. The primary aim is to investigate the interdependence between these two spheres, i.e. spatial design and social dynamics. To achieve this aim, the research employs case study methodology with a mixed-methods approach is employed, combining quantitative data (such as mapping and listing cohousing initiatives and surveying space surfaces) with qualitative ethnographic methods (fieldwork, participant observation, and interviews). This dissertation analyses sixteen European cohousing projects built between 2000 and 2023. Almost half of these are in Southern Europe, addressing the knowledge gap in this region. The study maps the phenomenon in Southern European countries, analysing their main characteristics, evolution, and cross-country similarities and differences. The research focuses on the in-depth analysis of Barcelona's grant-of-use cohousing cooperatives, highlighting their transformation from a grassroots initiative to a systematic approach of implementation within a decade. Barcelona, with twenty projects built or under development, is the city with the most cohousing initiatives in Southern Europe. More importantly, it is the only city in the region to explicitly support cohousing in its municipal housing policies. The comparative analysis of the case studies demonstrates how community-driven design, promotion, and management generate procedural, normative, and architectural innovations. The co-design process involves intense negotiations between individual and collective interests, resulting in design solutions prioritising community values over individual convenience. These values often lead to innovations in design, urban planning, and housing regulations. At the same time, spatial characteristics are designed to encourage community life. This research applies Williams' Design for Social Contact Theory (2005) and Forty's concept of Flexibility (2004), demonstrating how design features can influence and enhance social dynamics and overall well-being within the cohousing community.Key design principles, such as shared facilities, gradual transitions between spaces, and strategically placed activity sites, significantly increase social interaction and community cohesion. The emphasis on flexibility, achieved through redundant space, technical means, or indeterminacy, allows spaces to adapt and respond to the evolving needs of cohousing residents. The findings of the post-occupancy analysis highlight the incremental inhabitation process, where spaces are progressively defined and transformed, and underscores the dynamic nature of cohousing environments. The work presented here provides the first systematic investigations of cohousing in Southern Europe. These quantitative and qualitative analyses can inform policies to support current and future initiatives. By identifying key elements, successful strategies, and challenges of the Barcelona model, this research offers valuable insights for replicating and scaling cohousing projects in Southern Europe. The cross-case spatial analysis gives designers guidance on effective design features. Additionally, the qualitative investigation into the project process sheds light on the critical challenges and innovative potential of need-based collaborative design.

Quality
The Validation, Monitoring, Modification and Accreditation Framework (VSMA Framework) for official degrees ties the quality assurance processes (validation, monitoring, modification and accreditation) carried out over the lifetime of a course to two objectives—the goal of establishing coherent links between these processes, and that of achieving greater efficiency in their management—all with the overarching aim of improving programmes.
