The central theme of the practice of architecture is architectural design, which must bring together construction, spatial organisation and use via the aesthetic, ethical and cognitive dimensions of the design process.

As Vitruvius pointed out two thousand years ago, that this means relating the natural sciences and the exact sciences, on the one hand, and the social sciences on the other.

This doctoral programme puts focus on one or another of these disciplines related to architecture. Though, as a set, these lines of research focus candidates’ theses on the architectural project as a design intervention that is able to connect geography and history, climate and society, and nature and culture.

The programme is organised around research groups, each of which has a particular profile based on its focus. Thus, it is not necessary for each one of them to respond to the same need for research into design; its teaching; its aesthetic, ethical or scientific nature; or its impact on modern cultural life.

Now, more than ever, given the lack of architects in the field of research in Europe, this programme is an indispensable necessity.

General information

Access profile

Given the scientific character of the programme in the field of architectural design, the natural pathway for admission is through official master’s programmes offered by the UPC in Design Theory and Practice, in Sustainable Intervention in the Built Environment (MISMeC) or in Advanced Studies in Architecture-Barcelona (MBArch) with specialisations in Contemporary Design (taught entirely in English); Process, Design and Programming; or Architectural Restoration and Rehabilitation, which will not require candidates to take any additional courses. The admission process to these master’s programmes already ensures that students have the backgrounds necessary to be admitted to the doctoral programme.

In addition to this academic background, certain personal characteristics are considered important, such as an interest in the research projects that are carried out in the programme, having critical and analytical abilities, having initiative, being consistent and persistent with work, being able to work well in a team and being able to communicate properly, both orally and in writing. The doctoral programme’s Postgraduate Committee will resolve any cases in which candidates exhibit peculiar characteristics.

Output profile

Doctoral candidates who complete a doctoral degree will have acquired the following competencies, which are needed to carry out quality research (Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January, which regulates official doctoral studies):

a) A systematic understanding of the field of study and a mastery of the research skills and methods related to the field.
b) An ability to conceive, design or create, put into practice and adopt a substantial process of research or creation.
c) An ability to contribute to pushing back the frontiers of knowledge through original research.
d) A capacity for critical analysis and an ability to assess and summarise new and complex ideas.
e) An ability to communicate with the academic and scientific community and with society in general as regards their fields of knowledge in the manner and languages that are typical of the international scientific community to which they belong.
f) An ability to foster scientific, technological, social, artistic and cultural progress in academic and professional contexts within a knowledge-based society.

The award of a doctoral degree must equip the graduate for work in a variety of settings, especially those requiring creativity and innovation. Doctoral graduates must have at least acquired the personal skills needed to:

a) Develop in contexts in which there is little specific information.
b) Find the key questions that must be answered to solve a complex problem.
c) Design, create, develop and undertake original, innovative projects in their field.
d) Work as part of a team and independently in an international or multidisciplinary context.
e) Integrate knowledge, deal with complexity and make judgements with limited information.
f) Offer criticism on and intellectually defend solutions.

Finally, with respect to competencies, doctoral students must:
a) have acquired advanced knowledge at the frontier of their discipline and demonstrated, in the context of internationally recognised scientific research, a deep, detailed and well-grounded understanding of theoretical and practical issues and scientific methodology in one or more research fields;
b) have made an original and significant contribution to scientific research in their field of expertise that has been recognised as such by the international scientific community;
c) have demonstrated that they are capable of designing a research project that serves as a framework for carrying out a critical analysis and assessment of imprecise situations, in which they are able to apply their contributions, expertise and working method to synthesise new and complex ideas that yield a deeper knowledge of the research context in which they work;
d) have developed sufficient autonomy to set up, manage and lead innovative research teams and projects and scientific collaborations (both national and international) within their subject area, in multidisciplinary contexts and, where appropriate, with a substantial element of knowledge transfer;
e) have demonstrated that they are able to carry out their research activity in a socially responsible manner and with scientific integrity;
f) have demonstrated, within their specific scientific context, that they are able to make cultural, social or technological advances and promote innovation in all areas within a knowledge-based society;
g) have demonstrated that they are able to participate in scientific discussions at the international level in their field of expertise and disseminate the results of their research activity to audiences of all kinds.

Duration of studies and dedication regime

Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, counted from the date of first enrolment in the relevant programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is seven years from the date of first enrolment in the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. To calculate these periods, the date of deposit is considered to be the date on which the thesis is made publicly available for review.

If a doctoral candidate has a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%, the maximum period of study is six years for full-time students and nine years for part-time students.

For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years.

When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the requirement to complete this minimum period of study.

Temporary disability leave and leave for the birth of a child, adoption or fostering for the purposes of adoption, temporary foster care, risk during pregnancy or infant feeding, gender violence and any other situation provided for in current regulations do not count towards these periods. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which must inform the Doctoral School.

Doctoral candidates may request periods of temporary withdrawal from the programme for up to a total of two years. Requests must be justified and addressed to the academic committee responsible for the programme, which will decide whether or not to grant the candidate's request.

Extension of studies
If a doctoral candidate has not applied to deposit their thesis before the expiry of the deadlines specified in the previous section, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may, at the request of the doctoral candidate, authorise an extension of this deadline of one year under the conditions specified for the doctoral programme in question.

Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:

  • The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate not having completed their annual enrolment or applied for a temporary interruption.
  • The doctoral candidate not having formalised annual enrolment on the day after the end of the authorisation to temporarily interrupt or withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate receiving a negative reassessment after the deadline set by the academic committee of the doctoral programme to remedy the deficiencies that led to a previous negative assessment.
  • The doctoral candidate having been the subject of disciplinary proceedings leading to their suspension or permanent exclusion from the UPC.
  • A refusal to authorise the extensions applied for, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.3 of these regulations.
  • The doctoral candidate not having submitted the research plan in the period established in Section 8.2 of these regulations.
  • The maximum period of study for the doctoral degree having ended, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.4 of these regulations.

Dismissal from the programme means that the doctoral candidate cannot continue studying at the UPC and that their academic record will be closed. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission, and the committee must reevaluate the candidate in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.

A doctoral candidate who has been dismissed due to having exceeded the time limit for completing doctoral studies or due to an unsatisfactory assessment may not be Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Page 17 of 33 admitted to the same doctoral programme until at least two years have elapsed from the date of dismissal, as provided for in sections 3.4 and 9.2 of these regulations.

Access requirements

As a rule, applicants must hold a Spanish bachelor's degree or equivalent and a Spanish master's degree or equivalent, provided they have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits on the two degrees (Royal Decree 43/2015, of 2 February).

Applicants who meet one or more of the following conditions are also eligible for admission:

a) Holders of official Spanish degrees or equivalent Spanish qualifications, provided they have passed 300 ECTS credits in total and they can prove they have reached Level 3 in the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education.
b) Holders of degrees awarded in foreign education systems in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), which do not require homologation, who can prove that they have reached Level 7 in the European Qualifications Framework, provided the degree makes the holder eligible for admission to doctoral studies in the country in which it was awarded.
c) Holders of degrees awarded in a country that does not belong to the EHEA, which do not require homologation, on the condition that the University is able to verify that the degree is of a level equivalent to that of official university master's degrees in Spain and that it makes the holder eligible for admission to doctoral studies in the country in which it was awarded.
d) Holders of another doctoral degree.
e) Holders of an official university qualification who, having been awarded a post as a trainee in the entrance examination for specialised medical training, have successfully completed at least two years of training leading to an official degree in a health sciences specialisation.

Note 1: Regulations for access to doctoral studies for individuals with degrees in bachelor's, engineering, or architecture under the system prior to the implementation of the EHEA (CG 47/02 2014).

Note 2: Agreement number 64/2014 of the Governing Council approving the procedure and criteria for assessing the academic requirements for admission to doctoral studies with non-homologated foreign degrees (CG 25/03 2014).

Legal framework

Admission criteria and merits assessment

Priority will be given to architect applicants with master’s degrees in DPA; in Advanced Studies in Architecture-Barcelona (MBArch) specialising in Process, Design and Programming, or Contemporary Design (taught exclusively in English); or in other subject areas that cover architectural design, urbanism, landscaping, the environment, technology, architectural theory, dwellings or renovation.

If candidates are considered to be underprepared, they will be required to complete bridging courses. These bridging courses may be taken at the UPC from the activities offered by current master’s programmes in the field of architecture.

Criteria for assessing merits (weighting):

• CV and academic transcript: 55%.
• Proposed research project: 20%.
• Interview and work plan: 20%.
• Languages spoken: 5%.

Training complements

The programme’s Postgraduate Committee may require candidates to pass specific bridging courses. In this case, the Committee will monitor the bridging courses and set up appropriate criteria to limit their length.

The courses shall involve training in research, but in no case will candidates be required to enrol in 60 or more ECTS credits.

Depending on the doctoral student activity report, the programme’s Academic Committee may propose measures, in addition to those established by current regulations, that would disassociate candidates who do not meet the established requisites.

Students admitted to the programme with the aforementioned official master’s degrees will not be required to take bridging courses.

For applicants holding other degrees, the Postgraduate Committee will determine, depending on the applicant’s background, which bridging courses, if any, must be taken. Students coming from master’s programmes outside of the UPC must take the number of credits established by the Postgraduate Committee in the aforementioned master’s programmes, which will be recommended by the corresponding research group.

Procedure for the preparation and defense of the research plan

Doctoral candidates must submit a research plan, which will be included in their doctoral student activity report, before the end of the first year. The plan may be improved over the course of the doctoral degree. It must be endorsed by the tutor and the supervisor, and it must include the method that is to be followed and the aims of the research.

At least one of these annual assessments will include a public presentation and defence of the research plan and work done before a committee composed of three doctoral degree holders, which will be conducted in the manner determined by each academic committee. The examination committee awards a Pass or Fail mark. A Pass mark is a prerequisite for continuing on the doctoral programme. Doctoral candidates awarded a Fail mark must submit a new research plan for assessment by the academic committee of the doctoral programme within six months.

The committee assesses the research plan every year, in addition to all of the other activities in the doctoral student activity report. Doctoral candidates who are awarded two consecutive Fail marks for the research plan will be obliged to definitely withdraw from the programme.

If they change the subject of their thesis, they must submit a new research plan.

Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director

The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.

The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.

PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.

The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.

A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.

Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.

If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.

The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.

For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.

More information at the PhD theses section

Permanence

    Thesis abstract: Often, studying the multiple variations that a building undergoes is like taking a trip back in time. Discovering what is behind this transformation is like an open book for those who know how to read it, where very distant details are told that leave a mark and when that mark becomes visible, it is like returning to the beginning of that journey. It thus becomes a circle of relationships influenced by certain perceptible manifestations. However, on the other hand, most of these will be intangible and will be the ones that will truly determine the more or less adequate quality of what is acquired. The transformation of the environment, conditioned by the existence of human nature, is influenced by multiple factors that affect a probable response to environmental stimuli. The need for shelter and a social setting must be satisfied through an architectural form and the order in the landscape that occurs there through all the instinctive tools that promote survival. This is the case with the shanty towns that cluster around the motley industrial, French colonial area of the coastal city of Casablanca. A period of transition that goes from 1945 to 1956, between the end of colonialism and the beginnings of decolonization, where these slums, slums, slums or, more in line with their colonial origin, bidonvilles, proliferate as a paradigm and pathology. In their attempt to structure and restructure the city in the face of these spontaneous masses that jeopardized the orderly growth of cities, new studies on the change in the coming scenario anticipate ideas and projects on the behaviors and ways of life that have arisen and imposed on the tables of performance. In mind, past and future forms of life seek balance on the direction of the anticipated city that only time in its knowledge will tell.Faced with solutions of acquired interpretation, the contrasting stacks of courtyard houses as a genuine and deep-rooted way of understanding the Moroccan city, awaken in the consciousness of the natural passage of time an advance without a solution of continuity from a past that is still operational. The indeterminate spaces and the adaptation to the different needs as indispensable qualities in the possession of the homes will mark this premise imposed in the face of the inability to take another course other than that of adaptation to wrong situations, the object of European experimentations, where the building manifests as an incomplete assumption until the moment in which it is not inhabited or the individual is capable of appropriating it.In its continuity and on the movement that causes what has already been learned, one more step establishes the development of prolonged growth. The conquest of height, the true upward evolution based on the synthesis of studies on the acquired or imposed place, its people, origins and its multiple errors as true tests of what is understood to last, a constant, a continued evolution to understand or extract an approximation to the so-called habitat.

    Thesis abstract: This research stems from two personal interests: climate awareness and Alejandro de la Sota. Based on this premise, the aim of the research is to find the connection between environmental aspects and architecture, particularly in the project process. Thus, the research will be used to answer the question:At what moments and in what ways do environmental aspects influence architectural form?To achieve this, the present investigation will analyze Sota's Casa Arvesú, structuring its study into four parts. The first part addresses the concept of environmental aspects, establishing the vocabulary to be used. The objective of this first part is to return to the origin of the concept and review current stances regarding the impact of environmental decisions on the project, aiming to move away from clichés and redefine architecture as a medium rather than a mere support for environmental solutions. At the end of this first section, the linkage of environmental aspects with Alejandro de la Sota will also be discussed. The second part pertains to the descriptive study of the house. It involves an exploration of the national and international context at the time of its conception and construction. Additionally, the work is recognized within Alejandro de la Sota’s professional trajectory. The house is then characterized in terms of use, location, and technique throughout the project process, analyzing its various versions—sketches—until reaching its final form. The third part pertains to the analytical study. For this, a “digital twin” of the work—demolished in 1987—has been created, allowing for the quantification of environmental impacts in terms of geometry, light, systems, or energy and fluid dynamics checks of the house. The objective of the digital model is the numerical verification of what Alejandro de la Sota applied empirically. From this starting point, the solutions are initially categorized as systems and then the house is examined through five characteristic actions that relate the work to environmental aspects. The five categories are as follows:- Elevate, densify, and distance [as implantation]- Permeate, settle, and plant [as appropriation of the environment]- Contrast, flow, and culminate [as program]- Shield, project, and extend [as definition of limits]- Shade, ventilate, and retain [as passive strategies]Finally, this third part concludes with the identification and incorporation of environmental objectives in the project, using a graph that transversally relates the design process. The fourth part corresponds to the conclusions of the research. That is, the answer to the question that initiated this research in four phases:- Characterization of the environment, the user, and the problem.- Formulation of objectives.- Establishment of the internal structure of the project.- The “effort to reduce effort.”

    Thesis abstract: This doctoral thesis examines the process of adaptation of Modern Architecture in Quito over a period of twenty years (1960-1980). The city's location at latitude 0 and an elevation of 2850 meters above sea level determines the unique solar light that influences both the natural and artificial contexts. There are no studies on light under these conditions, nor one that compiles the most important references for those interested in architecture in Quito, especially students. Another motivation is to highlight the efforts of the most influential generation of architects in the country, unknown to most young people, an aspect that this work seeks to address. The methodology includes an extensive bibliographic source, field visits, interviews, and photographic resources, as well as the redrawing of all the projects (38) to establish a common basis for analysis using current technical visualization and modeling resources. The study begins with a description of the Andean mountains in general, the Andes in Ecuador, and concludes with the Guayllabamba Basin, where the city of Quito is located, along with its volcano, Pichincha. This first part is complemented by the research of Alexander von Humboldt, who in the 19th century led an expedition to study the flora and fauna of various Latin American countries, including Ecuador. The second part of the thesis presents the city of Quito in three moments: the pre-Columbian city, the colonial city, and the modern city.In the third part, the influence of Humboldt on landscape painting is revisited, followed by landscaping in Ecuador and painting in the mid-20th century. Painting, along with photography and watercolor, contributes to understanding the light of Quito, as well as the particular descriptions of it in literature. The following section organizes specific aspects of light in terms of principles, spaces, and relevant lighting elements in the urban environment of Quito. In the fourth section, the process of learning and adaptation of modern architecture in Quito is addressed. The analysis of three selected works for their relationship with the landscape reveals the value of the study. As a complement and context to these works, the systematic analysis of 38 works considered in this work is presented, serving as a very useful reference. In conclusion, this doctoral thesis highlights the importance of a comprehensive approach in architecture, focused on light and the environment. The findings of this work provide valuable information for architecture in harmony with Quito's environment, promoting identity and suggesting possible directions for future research.

    Thesis abstract: The work of RCR arquitectes is recognizable and recognized, based on intense interventions almost always represented from the inside out, deep, somber, which often incorporate this outside, this environment, in their expression: works, therefore, woven through their relationships with this environment, with the inhabitants, works that define deep spaces, gradations through architectural elements converted into filter systems; more an environment, a scene, an atmosphere, than an object. This atmospheric consideration is the basis of the understanding of the work of this study proposed by this thesis, and it does so through a journey through three scales of relationship between the work of architecture and its environment -with the atmosphere they generate- through a project associated with each of these stairs: The Entremurs House by the relationship scale of the person, the Espai La Lira for the city, the Pavelló del Baño -the smallest- for the territory. The analysis of the projects -carried out through a consultation of the original documentation deposited in the studio archives, much of it unpublished-, their relationship both with their own architecture and with many others, and an interpretation of each of these projects -all accompanied by a revisit of each of them- will allow us to introduce ourselves to the logic of the work of RCR arquitectes until we can question ourselves about a possible definition of the spaces proposed by this Study in this atmospheric key.

    Thesis abstract: This text is the outcome of PhD research on El Barri Gaudí (Gaudí Neighborhood), one of the collective housing prototypes that emerged worldwide during the 1960s and 1970s embodying alternative ways of communal living in cities. The notion of 'utopia inhabited' and its apparent contradiction delves into the concept of 'past futures'—radical designs that disrupted contemporary conventions, envisioned an ideal future, were eventually constructed, and continue to be inhabited today. Among them, Gaudí Neighborhood, located in Spain and designed by El Taller de Arquitectura, represents a unique case and the first built prototype of a collective housing exploration developed by the transdisciplinary team over a decade. To unpack the story of El Barri and learn from this radical built experience, this dissertation interweaves a series of complex and interconnected narratives. Similar to a documentary, it encompasses various testimonies, gathering voices from archival material, fieldwork, and interviews with the design team members, builders, and neighbors. Echoing the theatrical qualities of the place, which, far from being a setting, is an active actor in the everyday life of the community, this dissertation is structured into independent scenes with a central character: The Neighborhood. The narrative is circular and follows the typical cycle of prototyping. There are three main chapters or groups of scenes, each dedicated to a prototyping phase: everyday scenes—the learnings extracted from contrasting expectations vs. reality—, design scenes—the process of design which includes later iterations of the system—, and built scenes—the built test which does not correspond to a defined object but an open system and its combinable elements. Each group has its structure and temporal logic, constantly traveling through time and scale, and is introduced by its distinct prelude. The everyday scenes explore the conception of the neighborhood as a social utopia: an alternative way of communal living within cities. The communal vision was embodied in an organic urban fabric, a series of domestic settings that offer inhabitants a rich landscape for freedom of movement and daily encounters. The design scenes focus on analyzing how the Gaudí Neighborhood was shaped within its political, social, and economic context. During a period of significant rural exodus, this collection of scenes delves into the team's search to provide an affordable alternative to the widely spread blocks and towers, aiming to offer a variety of spaces for encounters similar to those found in Mediterranean villages. This chapter reveals how this pursuit of creating spaces characteristic of spontaneous and organic fabric led them to work with systems of geometric growth, both for this project and subsequent prototypes. The built scenes deconstructs Gaudí Neighborhood into its essential ingredients and components that define its unique and magical landscape. This series of scenes are presented as micro-narratives concerning its colors, shapes, materials, and elements. The analysis explores the role played by each component, as well as its potential inspiration and inclusion in previous and later collective housing prototypes.Behind the scenes shifts the focus from El Barri Gaudí to the Taller de Arquitectura team, the transdisciplinary collective responsible for its design. This section details the team's formation, which is closely linked to the design and construction of the Neighborhood. It delves into their connections and collaborative working methods. Finally, it reveals the ambiguity of a team sometimes presented as a radical collective, while at other times overshadowed by the figure of Ricardo Bofill.

    Thesis abstract: The object of study of this investigation is centred on the potential that extraordinary events of the city have as a project design tool. We refer to instances in which the city is transformed into a laboratory for experimentation of strategies that offer different ways of perceiving and experiencing it. The proposal is based on observing these non-ordinary situations from an architectural and purposeful approach; the moments in which behaviours and rules are put on hold to give way to unique urban conditions, creating a latent space for the spontaneous, the unexpected, or the unprogrammed. In such scenarios, the capacities and qualities typically associated with a space and its use can be pushed to the extreme, with the extreme itself seen as an opportunity to unveil new possibilities. Places of manifestation lead to a new understanding that incites different ways of moving, instigating an architectural sensibilization through the experience of the extravagant. This thesis is grounded in specificity, focusing on concrete situations that unfolded in a particular time and space, approaching them with a non-dogmatic lens.

    Thesis abstract: Domestic architecture is the backbone of the historic city due to its ambivalent capacity, expressed in urban housing models, of providing the citizens habitat at the same time of contributing to plot the texture, to structure the morphology and to define the urban identity. The research of two a priori disparate models, the that of the late Georgian London terraced houses and that of the New York apartment houses of the "Metropolitan Era", between which, however, a formal parallelism can be detected, had made possible to expose where the essentiality of architectural repetition lies in the definition of an urban housing model. The establishment of a repetitive canon is sine qua non condition for its configuration and prevalence; so that, when the repetition is objectified and applied to practice, it appears implicit in the design codes that govern the model. It is found that the repetition covers three magnitudes: the big scale, which considers the implementation in the city; the intermediate scale, of typological nature, which contains the different typologies which make up the model; and the smaller scale of detail, that focuses the attention on those architectonic elements that, with a similar design, are regularly repeated. The result is an urban landscape in which architectural uniformity prevails, given by the rhythmic sequence that provides the city with the orderly repetition of certain parameters linked to domestic architecture; A precious, although sometimes forgotten, uniformity that allows the urban maelstrom to be calmed down and that architecture that has to be highlighted singularizes. In order to an urban housing model will become established and it persisted along the time, the repetitive canon which configures it must admit a certain degree of transgression, of flexibility in front of the different social and design conditions that may be required in each one of uncountable dwelling units that conform it. An urban housing model, governed by a repetitive canon with capacity of adaptability, could even be extrapolated contextually; as the thesis demonstrates with the translation of the model of the sober and elegant London terraced houses to New York, where after an adaptation process, including a scalar magnification, it was transformed into the model defined by the magnificent apartment houses built around Central Park during the final decades of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century.

Quality

The Validation, Monitoring, Modification and Accreditation Framework (VSMA Framework) for official degrees ties the quality assurance processes (validation, monitoring, modification and accreditation) carried out over the lifetime of a course to two objectives—the goal of establishing coherent links between these processes, and that of achieving greater efficiency in their management—all with the overarching aim of improving programmes.
