This doctoral programme is drawn from a previous programme called the official doctoral programme in Electronic Engineering, organised jointly by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), and recognised with the Pathway to Excellence Award (MEE2011 - 0690). On 6 June 2012, a new agreement was signed between the UPC and the UIB to organise and develop the programme together. This agreement took into account the regulatory changes resulting from Royal Decree 99/2011. In recent years, the programme has grown in volume. Currently, around 110 students are enrolled (105 at the UPC and 6 at the UIB, approximate figures [1]) and around 14 doctoral theses are defended each year.
The research groups in the Physics Department of the UIB have a long tradition of collaborating with groups in the UPC Department of Electronic Engineering. Over the last twenty years, this has led to numerous joint publications and collaborations on shared projects and thematic networks. The geographic proximity and the proximity in research topics creates the ideal complementarity for doctoral students at both institutions, who can benefit from a broader, more complete framework. This justifies the suitability of offering a joint doctoral programme.
Objectives
The objective of the programme is to provide training leading to a doctoral degree for Spanish and international students who hold a university qualification in electronics. Students can prepare their doctoral thesis in one of the following subject areas. benefiting from the complementary research experience of the research groups that work in these areas:
- Industrial and Power Electronics
- Semiconductor and Microsystem Devices
- Integrated Circuits and Systems
- Measuring Systems and Biomedical Instrumentation
Therefore, the main objective of the doctoral programme in Electronic Engineering is to train specialists from Spain and abroad with competencies in their research areas at international level, who are capable of researching and developing new products and services in the areas of power electronics, devices and microsystems, circuits and integrated systems and instrumentation and measurement. The lecturers on the doctoral programme have proven research experience. Doctoral degree holders who graduate from the programme could contribute to scientific, technological and socioeconomic progress through their command of knowledge of electronic technology and its potential applications. They will have received training that helps them to find jobs in research centres, universities and research departments and in innovation development in companies with strong technological content.

Duration of studies and dedication regime
Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, counted from the date of first enrolment in the relevant programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is seven years from the date of first enrolment in the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. To calculate these periods, the date of deposit is considered to be the date on which the thesis is made publicly available for review.
If a doctoral candidate has a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%, the maximum period of study is six years for full-time students and nine years for part-time students.
For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years.
When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the requirement to complete this minimum period of study.
Temporary disability leave and leave for the birth of a child, adoption or fostering for the purposes of adoption, temporary foster care, risk during pregnancy or infant feeding, gender violence and any other situation provided for in current regulations do not count towards these periods. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which must inform the Doctoral School.
Doctoral candidates may request periods of temporary withdrawal from the programme for up to a total of two years. Requests must be justified and addressed to the academic committee responsible for the programme, which will decide whether or not to grant the candidate's request.
Extension of studies
If a doctoral candidate has not applied to deposit their thesis before the expiry of the deadlines specified in the previous section, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may, at the request of the doctoral candidate, authorise an extension of this deadline of one year under the conditions specified for the doctoral programme in question.
Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:
- The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
- The doctoral candidate not having completed their annual enrolment or applied for a temporary interruption.
- The doctoral candidate not having formalised annual enrolment on the day after the end of the authorisation to temporarily interrupt or withdraw from the programme.
- The doctoral candidate receiving a negative reassessment after the deadline set by the academic committee of the doctoral programme to remedy the deficiencies that led to a previous negative assessment.
- The doctoral candidate having been the subject of disciplinary proceedings leading to their suspension or permanent exclusion from the UPC.
- A refusal to authorise the extensions applied for, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.3 of these regulations.
- The doctoral candidate not having submitted the research plan in the period established in Section 8.2 of these regulations.
- The maximum period of study for the doctoral degree having ended, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.4 of these regulations.
Dismissal from the programme means that the doctoral candidate cannot continue studying at the UPC and that their academic record will be closed. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission, and the committee must reevaluate the candidate in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.
A doctoral candidate who has been dismissed due to having exceeded the time limit for completing doctoral studies or due to an unsatisfactory assessment may not be Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Page 17 of 33 admitted to the same doctoral programme until at least two years have elapsed from the date of dismissal, as provided for in sections 3.4 and 9.2 of these regulations.

Legal framework
Admission criteria and merits assessment
The academic committee checks compliance with the admission requirements according to current legislation. It makes the decision on admission and whether bridging courses are required. The decision is based on the documents that have been submitted, and the principles of merit and equal opportunities are upheld.
The following aspects are assessed for each applicant and points are given for each one:
- Suitability of the competencies gained by students in their entrance qualification (up to 3 points).
- Academic record (up to 3 points).
- Knowledge of the English language (up to 1 point).
- Assessment by the research group and integration into projects (up to 3 points).
The points for each aspect will be added to give each applicant’s entrance score. In general, candidates who meet the conditions in the admission requirement and obtain an entrance score of at least 6 points will be admitted. If the demand is greater than the offer of places, applicants will be ranked according to the score obtained. Applicants who gained the highest scores will be admitted first.
Criteria for establishing bridging courses
For the following three admission cases:
- Applicants who have a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and master’s degree issued in Spain.
- Applicants who have a university qualification issued in Spain or another country within the European Higher Education Area that qualifies them to access master’s degree studies and who have gained at least 300 ECTS credits in all their university courses, of which at least 60 credits must have been awarded for master’s degree studies.
- Applicants who have a qualification obtained in a foreign education system that does not require homologation, once the UPC has checked that the qualification demonstrates a level of training equivalent to the Spanish master’s degree and qualifies the holder to access doctoral studies in the country of issue.
- If the applicant demonstrates that they meet all three admission requirements, they are accepted on the programme without having to take bridging courses and are assigned a tutor.
- If, after an examination of the academic record for the master’s degree, the applicants have not demonstrated sufficient specific research training in the electronic technology field but they have the approval of a research group to prepare their doctoral thesis, they will be admitted on the condition that they take certain bridging courses, after consultation with the proposed tutor.
4. In the case of applicants who hold a Spanish bachelor’s degree whose duration was at least 300 ECTS credits, in accordance with European community regulations:
- If applicants meet the three specific admission requirements because the bachelor’s degree curriculum includes research credits that are equivalent in terms of training value to research credits from master’s degree courses, they are accepted on the programme without having to take bridging courses and are assigned a tutor.
- If the bachelor’s degree curriculum does not include research credits that are equivalent in terms of training value to research credits from master’s degree studies, but the applicants have the approval of a research group to prepare the doctoral thesis, they are accepted with the requirement of taking bridging courses, after consultation with the proposed tutor.
Training complements
The academic committee for the programme may require that doctoral students pass specific bridging courses. In this case, it will monitor the bridging courses that are taken and establish suitable criteria to limit their duration.
The bridging courses will be on research training, but doctoral students will never be required to enrol for a number of credits equal to or above 60 ECTS. The academic regulations of doctoral studies state that bridging courses may also be cross-disciplinary. However, this point is likely to be amended so that bridging courses are only associated with research credits, particularly when an applicant enters the doctoral programme with a bachelor’s degree worth 300 ECTS.
Considering the doctoral student activity report (DAD), the academic committee of the programme could propose additional measures to those established in the regulations that lead to the withdrawal of doctoral students who do not meet the established criteria.
As described in the admission requirements, bridging courses are only required of students who are admitted and do not have evidence of specific research training in the area of electronic technology. Students who hold one of the main entrance qualifications specified in the admission requirements will not be assigned any bridging courses.
The bridging courses that are required will always consist of ECTS credits associated with research subjects from the master's degree in Electronic Engineering at the UPC or the UIB, or other related master’s degrees, that are proposed by the thesis tutor.
For students described in cases 1, 2 or 3 in the section on admission requirements, the number of credits will be between 5 and 30, and will be established depending on the applicant's academic record and after consultation with the proposed tutor.
For students described in case 4 in the section on admission requirements, the number of credits will be between 15 and 50, and will be established depending on the applicant’s academic record and after consultation with the proposed tutor.
Bridging courses should be passed within a year from the first enrolment, and the academic committee of the programme will be responsible for verifying this at the time of the annual tutorial assessment. Students will be considered to have passed the bridging courses if they have passed the assessments established in the master’s degree subjects for which they have enrolled.

Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director
The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.
The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.
PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.
The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.
A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.
Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.
If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.
The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.
For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.
Permanence

Thesis abstract: This work was carried out within the framework of the “Doctorats Industrials” program, in collaboration with Regner Engineering S.L., a company specialized in the manufacturing of wheelchair solutions, and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. As cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of death globally, and people with disabilities are at increased risk, the need for continuous, non-obtrusive heart monitoring becomes urgent. Three high-growth markets relevant to Electrocardiography (ECG) monitoring in wheelchairs were analyzed. First, the global wheelchair market is growing steadily, with powered models showing strong demand. Next, wearable and medical wearable markets are expanding rapidly, driven by advances in sensor integration and healthcare needs. Finally, the mHealth and IoHT sectors are experiencing major growth due to digital health trends and remote monitoring. Together, these markets highlight strong commercial potential for the proposed system. This PhD thesis presents the design and validation of a novel unobtrusive ECG monitoring system fully embedded into a wheelchair, tailored to the daily needs of individuals with mobility impairments. The developed solution integrates single-lead ECG sensors into the wheelchair’s armrests, using active electrodes powered by a bootstrapped supply to ensure ultra-high input impedance and high Common Mode Rejection Ratio (CMRR) in front of electrode impedance mismatch. This design allows the system to operate under both direct conductive contact (similar to dry electrodes) and indirect capacitive coupling (through clothing), without requiring hardware changes.Furthermore, the ECG sensor includes a protection circuit against electrostatic discharges (ESD), compliant with IEC 61000-4-2, which has been accurate designed and simulated in order not to degrade the high input impedance. The system also features Bluetooth connectivity and a modular backend, aiming for future scalability and industrial application.Sensor characterization was performed using an original experimental setup with an AC coupling inside a Faraday cage, allowing the measurement of very high input impedance values at low frequencies, i.e.191 fF at 50 Hz and common-mode rejection ratios (CMRR) up to 76.1 dB. Real-ECG recording tests with a volunteer wearing a cotton shirt confirmed accurate signal acquisition, with 117 µV RMS amplitude for the ECG and 31 dB of Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR).The research successfully achieved its goals by designing and validating a reliable unobtrusive ECG system for wheelchairs, meeting both clinical and industry standards. It lays a strong foundation for future developments in health monitoring. The proposed solution lays the foundation for future integration into chairs, beds, vehicle seats or even wearable technologies. It marks an important advance toward reliable, non-intrusive ECG monitoring for people with limited mobility, with both clinical and commercial potential.

Thesis abstract: Deep Neural Network (DNN) models form the backbone of today’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. Their large size and high computational cost have resulted in specialized hardware accelerators being essential for executing these models across many applications. However, the energy efficiency of state-of-the-art accelerator systems falls short of the demands of current AI, especially considering that, while DNN models keep getting larger and more complex, Moore’s Law is coming to a halt. This thesis aims at investigating new ways of optimizing the energy efficiency of AI accelerators by considering and leveraging different degrees of freedom involved in the computation of DNN workloads. Namely, several energy efficiency optimization techniques are explored involving accelerator dataflow, functional circuit approximations, low-bit quantization, mixed-precision, and undervolting; with the goal of pushing the limits of energy-efficient AI acceleration.

Thesis abstract: Inverter-based microgrids are essential for integrating renewable energy sources and maintaining high power quality in distributed generation systems. However, unbalanced faults can induce negative-sequence currents and voltage imbalances, which significantly affect power stability and the operation of critical equipment. Conventional and solid-state circuit breakers, while capable of isolating faulted sections, face limitations in addressing these imbalances, especially in managing synchronization and power quality during disturbances. This thesis introduces a novel solution—the Negative-Sequence Virtual Circuit Breaker (NSVCB)—designed to prevent the propagation of negative-sequence components in islanded microgrids. Unlike traditional circuit breakers, the NSVCB eliminates negative-sequence currents and voltages at the point of common coupling (PCC) between microgrids without physically disconnecting sections of the grid, ensuring continuous power supply and frequency stability. The proposed NSVCB control scheme integrates advanced compensators with plug-and-play functionality, optimizing energy distribution and enhancing system resilience. This thesis is structured to comprehensively address the problem of negative-sequence currents and voltage imbalances in inverter-based microgrids, focusing on the development and validation of a Negative-Sequence Virtual Circuit Breaker (NSVCB). The document begins with an Introduction, which outlines the significance of power quality challenges in microgrids, particularly with respect to faults and imbalances, and reviews the limitations of conventional and solid-state circuit breakers. The next section, Modelling Asymmetrical Power Systems, presents a detailed methodology for analysing asymmetrical faults, using an illustrative example. Following this, the Control Proposal section defines three key control objectives—elimination of negative-sequence currents, improvement of power quality at the Point of Common Coupling, and maintaining power balance across inverters. A proposed control scheme for the NSVCB is also outlined here.In the Control Design section, the dynamic model of the closed-loop system is developed, with a focus on gain design and stability analysis, incorporating techniques such as the Nyquist criterion. The Experimental Results validate the proposed control system using a laboratory setup, comparing the NSVCB's performance with conventional circuit breakers, and demonstrating its advantages in mitigating negative-sequence currents without disconnection. The thesis concludes by summarizing the key findings and confirming the NSVCB's effectiveness in maintaining power quality and stability in microgrids.

Thesis abstract: Kesterite-based solar cells represent a promising avenue towards sustainable energy production due to their reliance on abundant, low-toxicity materials, aligning with global initiatives to minimize environmental impact and enhance energy security. This thesis contributes significantly to the field by advancing the understanding and efficiency of kesterite solar cells through innovative defect management strategies and the development of high-performance devices. The research initially focuses on developing a comprehensive and realistic model of kesterite solar cells, which is pivotal in bridging the theoretical predictions with experimental results, providing a robust framework for the analysis of the efficiency limitations and identifying avenues for enhancement. By incorporating a realistic depiction on the influence of defects on the device performance, this model sets a new benchmark for the assessment and optimization of thin-film solar cells. The innovative approaches for defect control within kesterite materials are central to the thesis. The research demonstrates that through precise defect control by an induced electric field or transient doping with small atoms, such as hydrogen and lithium, it is possible to significantly modulate the defect structure of kesterite absorbers. These modifications lead to the decoupling majority carrier density from minority carrier lifetime, effectively enhancing the performance and efficiency of the solar cells. These approaches not only improve the electrical properties of the material but also provides a method to systematically address the intrinsic limitations of kesterite semiconductors. Moreover, the thesis presents advancements in the synthesis and processing of kesterite solar cells, employing techniques such as solution processing, doping, and interface passivation. These methods have been shown to considerably improve the compositional uniformity and optoelectronic properties of the materials, driving the efficiencies closer to those required for commercial viability. Notably, the development of solution-processed kesterite solar cells emerge as a scalable and environmentally benign method, indicating a significant step towards the industrialization of this photovoltaic technology. The thesis concludes that the strategies and methodologies developed herein substantially enhance the understanding and performance of kesterite solar cells. The findings underscore the potential of these materials in the transition to renewable energy sources, highlighting their role in promoting a sustainable future. With further refinement and optimization, kesterite solar cells could play a critical role in the global energy landscape, offering a viable, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable solution to meet the growing energy demands. In summary, the work presented in this thesis exemplifies a significant advance in the field of photovoltaics, offering practical solutions and novel insights that pave the way for further research and development towards achieving high-efficiency, sustainable solar energy techniques.

Thesis abstract: This thesis investigated antimony Q-1D (Sb)-based solar cells as a promising alternative for sustainable energy generation, addressing critical challenges related to material properties, interfaces, and device architecture. Innovative strategies were developed to optimize optoelectronic properties and improve conversion efficiency, focusing on Sb2Se3, but including also preliminary studies on the Sb2(S,Se)3 solid solution, as well as exploring cadmium-free (Cd-free) materials as electron selective transport layers (ETL).A major achievement was the optimization of the Sb2Se3/CdS interface using chemical etching techniques, such as KCN treatment, which increased the average efficiency of solar cells from 4% to 5%, reaching 5.3% in the best-performing sub-cell. These treatments not only enhanced surface passivation but also altered surface polarity, resulting in the formation of a "buried junction" that improved the fill factor and overall energy conversion efficiency.High-pressure thermal annealings proved effective in enhancing crystal quality by increasing grain size, promoting preferred crystal orientations, and reducing defect density, which enabled a 5.8% efficiency using a new co-evaporation method. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of these techniques to improve device performance and reproducibility.Cadmium-free or significantly Cd-reduced configurations were explored to reduce environmental impact, achieving an efficiency of 6.6% in superstrate-configuration devices based on Sb2(S,Se)3, approaching the 7.6% benchmark achieved with CdS. In the substrate configuration, a Cd-free Sb2Se3 cell reached an efficiency of 5.2%, surpassing the 4.8% achieved with CdS, highlighting the potential of alternative materials to replace cadmium.Despite the progress made, several challenges remain, such as ensuring the stability of Sb2Se3 interfaces under operational conditions and optimizing new materials like SbSeI and SbSeBr. Improving the scalability of fabrication processes and the cost-effectiveness of new treatments are also key areas for future research. The results of this thesis provide a solid foundation for developing more efficient and sustainable Sb2Se3-based solar cells, emphasizing the importance of continued innovation in materials science and device engineering to overcome the remaining challenges and advance toward more scalable and efficient photovoltaic technologies.

Thesis abstract: In space exploration missions, scientists have been putting efforts to achieve targeted scientific goals, such as environmental study of Mars through various exploration missions. In recent years, multiple missions have been sent to study the atmosphere of Mars with advance sensing systems. In the process of developing various sensing systems, worst- case scenarios are also considered and their possible solutions become crucial to be implemented to deal with adversities. During the operation of a mission, critical system components such as sensors could face complete or partial damage, and because of that, the mission might fail to send data to the monitoring station. This is a known fact in the case of wind sensors deployed with Mars 2020 Perseverance and Curiosity Rover missions those suffered partial damage. Moreover, at some point, TWINS wind sensor with InSight lander mission also faced power issues. Such scenarios create hurdles in the scientific study of a planet. Various space sensors related problems can be caused by various adversities, such as dust devils at Mars, adaptation of operating points in sensors themselves, and obstacles around the sensing systems. Furthermore, it is not possible to repair or replace a sensor on Mars. Thus, it is crucial to address space sensor problems with remedial techniques to achieve the target objectives.Considering problems occurred in Mars wind sensors, this thesis is focused on investigating data-driven approaches to improve resilience of Mars wind sensors deployed in the last two Mars missions of NASA, namely TWINS (InSight Mission, 2018) and MEDA (Perseverance Mission, 2020) instruments. Various Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) models have been investigated to enhance the resilience of the aforementioned wind sensors in the case of partial failure. These data-driven algorithms are investigated to develop a soft or virtual sensor for Martian wind sensors. Furthermore, Transfer Learning (TL) based approach has been investigated to deal with data scarcity scenarios. These methods have yielded promising results in recovering the data in the event of partial failure. In TWINS investigation, RMSE for velocity is reduced by a factor between 2.43 and 4.78; and for wind angle by a factor between 1.74 and 4.71, compared to the case where only two wind sensing transducers are functioning. For MEDA, the investigated algorithms allowed to recover variables of the wind sensing boards with errors similar to TWINS instrument and in some cases have achieved slightly better results. With the TL approach, the multivariate predictions improve with the RMSE percentage between 10.21% to 22%. In summary, various data-driven methods investigated have illustrated the efficacy and potential in recovering data and dealing with adverse scenarios related to Mars wind sensors.

Thesis abstract: The building sector represents a significant portion of global energy consumption, accounting for over one-third of the total energy used worldwide. Within this sector, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems are the most substantial energy consumers, responsible for 40-60% of a building's energy demand. Consequently, enhancing the energy efficiency of HVAC systems is crucial for reducing global energy demand and mitigating associated environmental impacts. International initiatives, such as the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPDB), underscore the importance of digitalisation and advanced monitoring techniques as key enablers for improving building energy performance. This thesis addresses the need for improved supervision and monitoring of building energy assets, concentrating specifically on the development and application of Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) methodologies for HVAC systems. The main objective is to advance the state-of-the-art by systematically exploring a range of data-driven and model-based strategies. The research first evaluated the performance of an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) when modelling energy consumption, confirming its utility for detecting deviations from predicted HVAC behaviour. Building on this, the research advanced to classification-based FDD, addressing the need for robustness against previously unseen fault types. A two-stage approach using One-Class Support Vector Machines (OC-SVM) for novelty detection and multi-class Support Vector Machine (SVM) for diagnosis, enhanced by dimensionality reduction techniques, demonstrated improved robustness and reliability compared to standard classification methods. The inherent challenge of data scarcity in practical FDD applications led to the exploration of transfer learning. Recognising the significant operational dissimilarities between different HVAC installations, a tailored semi-supervised transfer learning methodology was developed, introducing a novel dissimilarity filter based on source model confidence. This approach significantly outperformed standard transfer learning techniques when applied to dissimilar Air Handling Units (AHU) datasets and highlighted the necessity of addressing domain shift in HVAC applications. To further mitigate data scarcity, the focus turned to hybrid modelling, aiming to create accurate digital twins of HVAC systems useful for developing advanced FDD strategies. An automated calibration methodology using Bayesian optimisation was successfully applied to a complex, coupled AHU-building model in Modelica. This yielded a high-fidelity model from limited historical data, demonstrating a scalable approach to developing accurate digital representations without extensive system knowledge. Finally, this hybrid model framework was extended for synthetic fault data generation. This provides a valuable tool for generating comprehensive datasets needed to train and test advanced FDD algorithms, especially useful for new or replicated buildings. In summary, this thesis presents a comprehensive investigation into enhancing HVAC system efficiency through advanced monitoring and FDD. It validates the effectiveness of diverse strategies, ranging from foundational regression and classification techniques enhanced with novelty detection, to sophisticated solutions like tailored transfer learning and hybrid model-based synthetic data generation. The research highlights the critical importance of addressing data scarcity and domain dissimilarity, offering practical methodologies to overcome these prevalent challenges. The findings contribute significantly to the development of more robust, reliable, and widely applicable FDD systems, paving the way for substantial energy savings and improved sustainability in the building sector.

Thesis abstract: Nowadays, high step-up converters with fast-dynamic response are demanded for many applications such as uninterruptible power supplies which are used to feed sensitive loads and DC-DC converters in grid connected micro inverters to absorb the maximum power from the PV panels. Several studies have been carried out on high step-up converters to increase voltage gain and efficiency as well as reduce the voltage stress of semiconductors while less attention has been paid to their dynamic response. A converter which can compensate load variations rapidly would have faster dynamic response and lower undershoot and overshoot output voltage and current. In this research, various switching converters will be investigated to achieve new topologies having the capability of faster dynamic response and obtaining higher voltage gain for the above-mentioned applications. Merging some converters has the potential of removing right half plane zero and making converters respond load variations at a faster pace without making any changes in the control circuit and filters. If the integrated converter can deliver power form the input to the load in all operating modes whether the switch is on or not, the converter would compensate load variations with lower interruption. This theory can be evaluated and proved by doing some theoretical and mathematical calculations on the control response and the situation of Zeros and Poles of the closed loop transfer function of the converter. To rate the achievements of this research, the dynamic quantities in the step response of the converters (e. g. overshoot, rise time, and settling time) can be investigated. Also, the voltage gain and efficiency of the converters are important qualities which have to be considered in comparisons. A time table is considered for each stage to ensure that this research can be finished through the next three years.

Thesis abstract: The rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies is transforming data collection, analysis, and use across various industries, from industrial to biomedical applications. A specialized class of IoT, known as Smart Dust Motes (SDMs), has recently gained attention. These ultra-miniaturized, self-sustaining devices are capable of sensing, computation, and communication at a millimeter scale. However, despite their vast potential, SDM and IoT applications face significant challenges, particularly in power management, miniaturization, and communication efficiency. One of the primary challenges in distributing SDM technology is managing energy consumption. As the number of SDMs increases and they are deployed in remote environments, sustainable energy sources will be needed for autonomous operation over extended periods without maintenance. Traditional power solutions, such as batteries, are impractical for these systems due to size limitations and frequent maintenance requirements. Moreover, wireless communication, especially through Radio Frequency (RF), uses a significant amount of energy, which affects the requirements of these applications. As a result, current approaches, such as batteries and RF communication, often struggle to provide sustainable, long-term solutions for maintaining both power and communication efficiency. This dissertation proposes the design of a self-powered Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) specifically developed for SDM and IoT applications, with the goal of addressing these challenges. The proposed system incorporates multiple key components, including a hybrid optical and RF transceiver and energy harvesting units. At the core of the system is the integration of negative photodiodes, which function both as light energy harvesters and optical data receivers, significantly minimizing the system's size and power consumption. The negative photodiodes provide higher efficiency than traditional positive photodiodes, improve energy conversion, and reduce both chip area and cost. The energy generated by the integrated photodiode is stored and regulated through an integrated voltage converter, which efficiently boosts the harvested energy to power the entire system. The hybrid communication system methods, offer flexibility for SDM applications where line-of-sight optical communication to be supplemented by RF transmission for enhanced range and reliability. A low-power reconfigurable RF transmitter, capable of operating in multiple modulation modes, enhance reliable communication even in non-line-of-sight conditions. To validate the proposed design, three prototype chips were fabricated using 0.18 µm CMOS technology and tested experimentally. The first prototype, featuring the hybrid optical/RF communication platform, achieved a data transmission rate of 20 kb/s with an optical receiver power consumption of 11 pJ/bit and RF transmission power of −18.65 dBm using light-harvested energy. The second optical receiver improved light data sensitivity using the DC-adapting comparison block technique. It consumed 60 nW of power and 1.5 pJ/bit at a transmission rate of 40 kb/s with a 0.5 V supply voltage. The energy-harvesting system demonstrated 57% efficiency and generated up to 8.7 µW of power from a negative photodiode area of 240 × 480 µm². These results demonstrate the system's capability to operate autonomously for extended periods, without the need for battery replacements or external power sources.

Quality
The Validation, Monitoring, Modification and Accreditation Framework (VSMA Framework) for official degrees ties the quality assurance processes (validation, monitoring, modification and accreditation) carried out over the lifetime of a course to two objectives—the goal of establishing coherent links between these processes, and that of achieving greater efficiency in their management—all with the overarching aim of improving programmes.
