Objectives

The main objective of the doctoral programme in Construction Engineering is to train students as specialists in the area of structural engineering and construction. The aim is to train professionals who can conceive, design, calculate and construct safe, durable, functional and aesthetic structures, using traditional and new materials, and to assess and maintain existing structures, including those that form part of historical heritage. In addition, the course is designed to provide solid training in efficient management of projects and works, with a focus on technological, construction, economic, environmental, sustainable development and life-cycle aspects. The overall educational goal of the research stage is to provide high-level scientific and technical training in the fields of structural and construction engineering. This training will enable students to generate new knowledge, propose new research paths and study unresolved problems regarding new materials, the resistant and functional behaviour of structures, new structural forms, new calculation and experimental methods, new construction systems and new ways of considering the relations between the natural and built environment. In addition, students are trained to communicate and transmit their knowledge and research by writing scientific documents such as journal articles and conference papers. In this way, students can demonstrate their capacity to understand the field of study in which they are involved and their ability to conceive, design and execute high-quality research, with the possibility of expanding the frontiers of knowledge and incorporating this knowledge into the production sector through research and development departments of construction companies and civil engineering consultancies.

Capacities

To achieve the objectives, the programme employs the right teachers in terms of quality, capacity and dedication. This is reflected in the students’ satisfaction, as they give a highly positive assessment of aspects relating to thesis supervision and monitoring. Student surveys also show that the main reason for selecting the doctoral programme is the prestige of the department and its teachers. A high proportion of doctoral theses prepared full-time. This can be achieved as many doctoral students have grants, awarded within the research projects with which they are associated or by their governments in the case of foreign students, most of whom are funded by grants in their countries of origin.

All thesis supervisors publish in JCR-listed journals with a high impact index, ranked in the first quartile (see http://futur.upc.edu/, http://futur.upc.edu/EC, http://futur.upc.edu/ATEM, http://gric.upc.edu/ca/publicacions )

The programme is divided into three research lines:

1. Structural technology
2. Construction materials
3. Research and innovation on industrial construction

The three research lines in the programme are associated with four consolidated research groups (GRC), recognised in the Government of Catalonia’s calls.

Since its creation, the doctoral programme has obtained the following quality awards:
- Quality award MCD2005-00345: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008
- Excellence award MEE2011-0393: 2011, 2012, 2013

Rationale for the programme

The doctoral programme was created in academic year 1992-1993 as a result of the need to communicate, update and develop available knowledge relating to the various facets of construction engineering (materials, techniques, management and environment). This need is even more noticeable today, given the major scientific and technical advances made in this knowledge area. Progress been boosted by general technological development, the establishment of the knowledge society and the increasing importance of concepts associated with sustainable development.

In recent decades, major technological advances have been made that have contributed to expanding and improving the characteristics of materials; design and calculation methods; instrumentation and testing procedures; assessment, repair and reinforcement systems; and opportunities to recycle materials and structures. In addition, there are vital concerns about the environment and how to adapt existing technology to sustainable, quality construction.

All of this has led to a considerable increase in available knowledge on aspects of construction engineering (behaviour and resistance of structures in the short- and long-term, durability, etc.). In turn, it opens up possibilities for new concepts relating to the design, construction or maintenance of constructions based on approaches that are more scientific, and therefore more reliable, as well as more sustainable economically and environmentally. However, the new developments also generate many unknowns, due to the speed at which they have occurred and the lack of knowledge of many aspects that have not been studied in depth, particularly in the area of new materials, reuse and the life cycle of structures. The regulations are being rapidly adapted to the technological developments, and are therefore undergoing significant conceptual and practical changes.

All of these changes have revolutionised professional practice in the area of construction. Consequently, professionals need to update their knowledge and qualified training is required to achieve this. This programme is designed to create a research and training environment so that this aspect can be included in the third-cycle training of our students.

The doctoral programme fits perfectly within priority policies and strategic research lines in Catalonia, Spain and Europe. The lecturers who are responsible for the research lines covered by the doctoral programme carry out their research activity in European, Spanish and Catalan projects. The programme is fully justified by its coherence and participation in areas of experience and priority research activity of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (civil engineering). It is associated with two of the University’s nine strategic, cross-disciplinary technological areas: materials technology, and construction technologies and public works.

The rationale for the programme is related to the need for highly qualified people in research, development and innovation in the Catalan industrial sector. It is supported by the fact that it is the only programme of these characteristics and content taught in all Catalonia.

Duration of studies and dedication regime

Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, counted from the date of first enrolment in the relevant programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is seven years from the date of first enrolment in the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. To calculate these periods, the date of deposit is considered to be the date on which the thesis is made publicly available for review.

If a doctoral candidate has a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%, the maximum period of study is six years for full-time students and nine years for part-time students.

For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years.

When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the requirement to complete this minimum period of study.

Temporary disability leave and leave for the birth of a child, adoption or fostering for the purposes of adoption, temporary foster care, risk during pregnancy or infant feeding, gender violence and any other situation provided for in current regulations do not count towards these periods. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which must inform the Doctoral School.

Doctoral candidates may request periods of temporary withdrawal from the programme for up to a total of two years. Requests must be justified and addressed to the academic committee responsible for the programme, which will decide whether or not to grant the candidate's request.

Extension of studies
If a doctoral candidate has not applied to deposit their thesis before the expiry of the deadlines specified in the previous section, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may, at the request of the doctoral candidate, authorise an extension of this deadline of one year under the conditions specified for the doctoral programme in question.

Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:

  • The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate not having completed their annual enrolment or applied for a temporary interruption.
  • The doctoral candidate not having formalised annual enrolment on the day after the end of the authorisation to temporarily interrupt or withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate receiving a negative reassessment after the deadline set by the academic committee of the doctoral programme to remedy the deficiencies that led to a previous negative assessment.
  • The doctoral candidate having been the subject of disciplinary proceedings leading to their suspension or permanent exclusion from the UPC.
  • A refusal to authorise the extensions applied for, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.3 of these regulations.
  • The doctoral candidate not having submitted the research plan in the period established in Section 8.2 of these regulations.
  • The maximum period of study for the doctoral degree having ended, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.4 of these regulations.

Dismissal from the programme means that the doctoral candidate cannot continue studying at the UPC and that their academic record will be closed. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission, and the committee must reevaluate the candidate in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.

A doctoral candidate who has been dismissed due to having exceeded the time limit for completing doctoral studies or due to an unsatisfactory assessment may not be Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Page 17 of 33 admitted to the same doctoral programme until at least two years have elapsed from the date of dismissal, as provided for in sections 3.4 and 9.2 of these regulations.

Admission criteria and merits assessment

Qualifications that provide direct access without the need for bridging courses include:

• master’s degree in Structural and Construction Engineering (MIEC-UPC)
• master’s degree in Civil Engineering
• master’s degree in Civil Engineering
• master’s degree in Industrial Engineering

The academic committee of the doctoral programme may recognise the equivalence of other masters of science (in the Bologna Process) or even other qualifications. To recognise equivalence, the committee will assess whether the qualification corresponds with the MIEC-UPC in terms of the number of credits and subjects that are covered, and the excellence of the academic institution in which the course was taught. Students who hold master’s degrees or other qualifications recognised as equivalent to the MIEC-UPC will be admitted automatically.

The admission of students who do not meet this criterion could be considered and analysed by the academic committee of the doctoral programme in Construction Engineering. In general, holding a master’s degree of an academic or scientific nature adapted to the guidelines of the Bologna Process will be an essential condition for access to the doctoral programme. In this case, the committee will decide whether to accept each applicant on an individual basis. The committee will assess the following aspects, according to the weighting indicated in brackets:

• The characteristics of previous studies (particularly the degree of equivalence with the master’s degree in Structural and Construction Engineering - scientific pathway) (25%).
• The grants and financial aid that have been awarded (5%).
• Academic record (20%).
• Possibility of supervision by lecturers in the department (30%).
• Previous research experience (15%).
• Language knowledge (5%).

If the number of applicants exceeds the maximum number of places, students who hold a MIEC-UPC will be given priority. Among these applicants, admission could be prioritised according to the final grades obtained in the master’s degree. Nevertheless, the academic committee of the doctoral programme could add and weight other criteria, such as previous experience in research, and publications.

Training complements

The academic committee for the programme may require that doctoral students pass specific bridging courses. In this case, it will monitor the bridging courses that are taken and establish appropriate criteria to limit their duration.

Bridging courses will be on research training. Doctoral students will never be required to enrol for bridging courses worth 60 ECTS or more.

The required bridging courses in methodological or scientific training could be established for each student by:

1. The academic committee, as an admission requirement or after admission as a condition for continuation to be completed within the time limit given below.
2. The tutor or the thesis supervisor, as a result of observing gaps in the student’s knowledge or performance.
3. The thesis supervisor, as a result of observing gaps in the student’s training or as an additional advanced training need in the topic(s) of the doctoral thesis.

The committee will establish the need for bridging course on admission. The tutor and the thesis supervisor could identify and establish the need for bridging courses during the first year.

The decision about which bridging courses a student must take is made by agreement between the tutor and the academic coordinators of the programme. This decision is then approved by the academic committee.

Bridging courses to take

The committee will establish the required credits and subjects in each case. In general, subjects will be selected from the UPC master's degree in Structural and Construction Engineering, when it is considered that students need to take these subjects to achieve a suitable initial level of knowledge. For each student, the committee can define two types of additional training:

1. Training requirements prior to entering the doctoral programme. Admission to the programme will depend on passing these subjects.

2. Requirements for training in methodology, research, oral and written communication techniques.

The deadline for completing this training is one-and-a-half years (18 months) when bridging courses are required by the academic committee as a condition for definitive admission. The committee could rule to discontinue the student if the required bridging courses have not been completed in the first 18 months.

Monitoring and evaluation of the doctoral student

Procedure for the preparation and defense of the research plan

Doctoral candidates must submit a research plan, which will be included in their doctoral student activity report, before the end of the first year. The plan may be improved over the course of the doctoral degree. It must be endorsed by the tutor and the supervisor, and it must include the method that is to be followed and the aims of the research.

At least one of these annual assessments will include a public presentation and defence of the research plan and work done before a committee composed of three doctoral degree holders, which will be conducted in the manner determined by each academic committee. The examination committee awards a Pass or Fail mark. A Pass mark is a prerequisite for continuing on the doctoral programme. Doctoral candidates awarded a Fail mark must submit a new research plan for assessment by the academic committee of the doctoral programme within six months.

The committee assesses the research plan every year, in addition to all of the other activities in the doctoral student activity report. Doctoral candidates who are awarded two consecutive Fail marks for the research plan will be obliged to definitely withdraw from the programme.

If they change the subject of their thesis, they must submit a new research plan.

Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director

The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.

The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.

PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.

The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.

A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.

Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.

If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.

The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.

For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.

Permanence

Learning resources

The programme has excellent facilities and services available in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Barcelona School of Civil Engineering and the Barcelona and Terrassa schools of Industrial Engineering. These resources include classrooms and laboratories, meeting rooms, computer rooms, libraries, multimedia facilities, expert computer advice and specific areas for students. Since academic year 2016-2017, a new space has been available for doctoral students in the B0 building of the North Campus. In the Lluís Agulló Structural Technology Laboratory (LTE) and the Construction Materials Laboratory (LME), where experimental theses are carried out, the learning resources and inventory material are suitable for the characteristics of the programme. This is because investments in both laboratories are drawn from the resources of competitive projects (the Spanish National Research Plan and European projects) obtained by lecturers on the programme. These are mainly research laboratories where much of the work that is carried out consists of applied research, with a strong focus on technology transfer to the construction industry.

The LTE is used for testing and monitoring large structures and structural elements with various materials, and the mechanical characterisation of these materials. The LMC is dedicated to mechanical, physical, chemical and microstructural characterisation of construction materials. Studies of durability and the environmental impact of materials and waste are particularly relevant.

Surveys show that students are very satisfied with the resources that are available for the doctoral programme (work space, furniture, laboratory equipment, material, etc.), which overall were rated with a 4 out of 5.

Thesis abstract: The need to strengthen foundations in existing structures has become increasingly important, driven by the aging of constructions and the growing demand for enhanced structural capacity, whether due to changes in use or updates to regulatory standards. In the case of rigid RC foundations, these often behave as D-regions, areas where stress and deformations do not follow a linear pattern and require specialized design approaches. While numerous studies have focused on the reinforcement of B-regions, research addressing the behavior of D-regions, such as rigid foundations, remains limited. This thesis addresses this gap by analyzing the behavior and reinforcement techniques through the enlargement of rigid reinforced concrete pile caps, a solution that increases their structural capacity. Special emphasis is made on the application of the Strut-and-Tie Method (STM), an approach particularly suited for D-regions, as it simplifies the non-linear behavior of stresses in these areas, facilitating the understanding of the structural mechanisms involved. The research combines a comprehensive literature review with an experimental campaign, in which reinforcement of rigid RC pile caps through enlargement was evaluated. The experimental tests and Non-Linear Finite Element Analysis (NLFEA) helped study the structural behavior of the pile caps in different configurations. The analysis of the results shows that enlargement is an effective technique to improve the structural capacity of foundations, although its success depends on factors such as the quality of the joints between the new and existing concrete and, to a lesser extent, the arrangement of secondary reinforcement. Additionally, the behavior in the Serviceability Limit State (SLS) was analyzed, and strut-and-tie models were proposed, with concrete ties whose tension varies with the evolution of crack widths. These models are capable of coherently explaining the behavior observed experimentally across the entire load range.Following the presentation of the experimental results, different design methodologies are compared, and the use of STM for reinforced pile caps is proposed, with a particular focus on verifying the struts crossing the joints between the original and enlarged sections. The findings are not only applicable to various structural scenarios but also establish a solid foundation for future research on the reinforcement of D-regions, making a significant contribution to the preservation and enhancement of existing structures.

Thesis abstract: Volcanic ash (VA), abundantly available in various regions globally, serves as an effective supplementary cementitious material (SCM) for partially substituting Portland cement (OPC). However, its inherently low reactivity presents a challenge for its broader utilization. This challenge can be overcome by enhancing VA's reactivity via several approaches: 1) employing mechanical and thermal treatments; 2) adding alkali activators; 3) using corrective additives to balance VA's chemical shortcomings; and 4) applying appropriate curing methods to stimulate pozzolanic reactions.According to ASTM C618 standards, VA falls into the Class N category. The study explored various activation strategies, including VA calcination (CVA) at temperatures ranging from 500 to 900 °C, alkali activation using Na2SiO3 (NSi), CaCl2 (CaCl), Na2SO4 (NS), and Na2CO3 (NC) at 1 to 4% dosages (relative to binder weight), and the strategic inclusion of SCMs like lime (L), fly ash (FA), and slag (EC) in amounts of 10, 20, and 30% (relative to VA weight). The curing process's influence was examined under different conditions: moist and heated environments (40 and 70°C for 3 days). The best mortar mixes underwent evaluations for compressive strength at intervals of 7, 28, and 90 days, alongside assessments of physical characteristics (e.g., porosity, water absorption, density) and microstructural properties. The mortars' durability was further gauged through shrinkage and acid resistance tests (against HCl, H2SO4, HNO3).For mortars comprising 35% VA (VA35) and subjected to moist curing, calcining VA at 700 °C coupled with a 20% lime addition resulted in achieving mortars boasting a peak strength of 49 MPa at 28 days, alongside a 9% reduction in water absorption compared to mortars with unmodified VA (VA35). Similarly, employing alkali activators, particularly NSi and CaCl at 1% and 2% dosages respectively, led to mortars demonstrating superior mechanical and physical properties. In mortars with a 50% VA content, the optimal alkali activator dosages were identified as 2% for NSi and 1% for CaCl. The addition of 20% FA and 10% EC emerged as the most effective corrective additives. Thermal curing (70°C for 3 days) significantly boosted early strength gains, curtailed mortar shrinkage, and enhanced resistance to H2SO4, especially notable in mortars prepared with CVA and 1% CaCl. Notwithstanding, at the 90-day mark, moist chamber curing was found to facilitate greater strength increases. A specific mix utilizing mixed activation (1% CaCl with CVA and 10% EC) notably outperformed, achieving 56 MPa, which is a 32% improvement over mortars with untreated VA (VA50). The presence of hydrated phases (C-S-H/C-S-A-H) and minerals such as portlandite, strätlingite, kuzelite, and Friedel's salt attested to the mortars' commendable performance. For mortars containing 75% VA, the best results were achieved with 2% NSi and 1% CaCl as activators, and the addition of 10% FA and 10% EC as correctives additives. Under moist curing, a mixed-activated mortar (1% CaCl-CVA-10%EC) exhibited the highest compressive strength at 90 days, reaching 44 MPa—a 29% increase over mortars with untreated VA (VA75). Thermal curing expedited early strength development, minimized shrinkage, and bolstered resistance to H2SO4, along with improving porosity and water absorption rates, with the exception of CaCl-containing mortars. Notably, the VA75 mix showed limited portlandite formation and an absence of strätlingite. This investigation confirms the feasibility of achieving satisfactory compressive strengths in mortars with high VA content. Furthermore, by leveraging the studied activation and curing techniques, it's possible to tailor the mortar mix for specific applications, optimizing for properties such as minimal shrinkage, reduced water absorption, enhanced early-age strength, or heightened resistance to particular acid exposures.

Thesis abstract: It is widely demonstrable that metals exhibit higher ductility and certain strain hardening beyond the yield strength. Carbon steel has been extensively used in the construction industry due to its several advantageous characteristics. This material exhibits a defined yield strength followed by a plateau and subsequently strain hardening. Attention has also been drawn to different alloys to address natural phenomena such as seismic events. These two aforementioned features are important in seismic design, and stainless steel is one of the novel materials being studied for this purpose, as it offers higher ductility and strain hardening.Based on experimental evaluations of all types of stainless steel, austenitic stainless steel has demonstrated high levels of ductility. Therefore, austenitic stainless steel EN 1.4307 is selected for this research. An extensive experimental program was developed to understand its behaviour in low-cycle fatigue, a main concern for seismic episodes in order to obtain the main characteristics and parameters needed to accurately model this behaviour.Cyclic strain hardening is the main feature of this evaluation. Parameters to describe the cyclic hardening and Bauschinger effect are calibrated using the numerical Chaboche model, which combines isotropic and kinematic hardening, two widely known approaches for the modelling of the material cyclic behaviour. The behaviour of structures against earthquakes can be characterised by low-cycle fatigue. Therefore, it is possible to capitalize on the cyclic properties found, namely strain hardening and ductility of austenitic stainless steel. The most well-known seismic-resistant frames are moment-resistant frames (MRFs), concentrically braced frames (CBFs), eccentrically braced frames (EBFs), and combinations thereof. All of these frames dissipate energy through various mechanisms of failure in specific zones. MRFs dissipate energy through bending moments in beams; CBFs do so via forces developed in braces; and EBFs dissipate energy through shear forces developed in strategically placed links. In this work. EBFs are analysed and designed using austenitic stainless steel EN 1.4307 in links as dissipative elements whereas, structural carbon steel is used for non-dissipative elements (i.e., beams, columns, and braces). The analysis reveals the importance of correctly selecting the set of cyclic parameters, as non-dissipative elements could achieve the plastic state before the link due to the excessive overstrength of the stainless steel.A correct value for overstrength is necessary to adopt to verify the capacity design of EBFs. Therefore, EBF designs are verified according to prEN1998 1-2:2022. However, this standard does not consider specific values for austenitic stainless steel, taking into account its overstrength more realistically.

Thesis abstract: The study and the conservation of stone heritage is a global concern, mainly when these constructions are in seismic zones. Due to its great cultural and historical diversity, Peru has many stone constructions in different archaeological sites, covering different construction typologies. Unfortunately, many of these constructions have not yet been structurally evaluated, so their structural behaviour is unknown. In addition, there is no classification of the stone structural typologies (taxonomy), so the different characteristics of existing constructions are unknown. One way to study the non-linear dynamic behaviour of these stone structures is to use a rigorous -but fast- numerical methodology to adequately reproduce the different failure mechanisms based on the dynamics of rigid bodies within the finite element method. Then, this work presents a taxonomic classification of prehispanic stone constructions in Peru, derived from a field study, as the first contribution. Based on this taxonomy, several archaeological sites in Puno and Cusco were classified, and the most common typologies of these regions were identified. The research also proposes novel algorithms developed in Python to obtain the geometric model of dry-joint stone structures using images taken by a camera, a mobile phone, or an existing photograph (including identification of stones and joints, named image segmentation). These routines allow the creation of a 3D model of each block (stone), assembling them, and exporting them to a finite element program for further evaluation.Regarding developing a numerical methodology, the dynamic of rigid bodies within the finite element method is proposed here. Each stone block is considered a rigid body interconnected with other blocks through nonlinear interfaces. This methodology was validated using Abaqus, based on the results of experimental tests developed in this thesis. The experimental campaign was carried out on three walls built with concrete blocks, simulating the geometry of the Inca structures. The walls were built on a tilting table and tested by rotating them out of the plane of the wall. Then, numerical models of the tests were developed by considering each stone as a rigid body and calibrating the contact properties to simulate the experimental behaviour correctly. The numerical results in weight, collapse angle, relative displacements at different points of the structure and collapse mechanisms were very similar to those obtained in the experimental campaign. As a case study, a section of an Inca stone wall from Sacsayhuaman, Cusco, was numerically evaluated using various seismic records. The complete geometric model of the stone wall was automatically obtained using the Python routines. Furthermore, discrete element particles represented the soil behind the wall. The properties of the numerical model were obtained from the experimental campaign, and the predominant frequencies of the structure were obtained using the vibration approach. As a result, the structure can adequately support these seismic records scaled up to a peak acceleration of 0.1 g. However, it suffers significant residual displacements for scaled records greater than 0.2 g.The proposed numerical methodology allows the rigorous evaluation of dry-jointed stone structures, knowing if the structure should be intervened to ensure its functionality. Therefore, it is expected that the results of this research will be used to study other stone constructions, opening possibilities for improving the methodology for different structural configurations.

Thesis abstract: The inspection and the consequent assessment of prestressed concrete bridges with post-tensionedcables is a complex issue. The system was conceived in an era in which there were no doubts about thedurability of the concrete. Moreover, avoiding the cracking of the concrete meant the total protection ofthe high-strength steel cables against corrosion. There was also the additional protection grouting layer. Thus, the first designers did not worry about providing inspection methodologies. When the first suddencollapses occurred, engineers questioned the possible damage mechanisms. Nowadays, a consolidatedinspection method is still missing. The research focuses on two major subjects, i.e. how to perform theinspection and how many tests to carry out for a reliable result. Some Non-Destructive Tests (NDTs)were selected and tested both in the laboratory and in situ. The required characteristics must be theeasiness of application, the low effort in terms of time and money, and their reliability. The lab campaignswere executed mainly to calibrate the procedures and collect data. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) wasselected for individuating tendons, while Ultrasonic Tomography (UT) for locating void regions. Even ifthe absence of grout is not sufficient for the corrosion trigger, the hypothesis of correspondence of voidand corrosion is conservative. Seven specimens were realised to state the accuracy of the twotechniques. The GPR was reasonably accurate in locating the tendons. It was possible to obtain a Normaldistribution with a good fit to the data, with parameters mean of 0.702 cm and a standard deviation of1.52 cm, describing the error. The UTs’ reliability was assessed by the Probability of Detection model. Itresulted that, stated 95% confidence and 90% probability of detection, the system can detect voidslonger than 30 cm. The remaining prestress estimation allows to state the losses' entity and indirectlyidentify damage. The X-ray diffraction technique was selected for the stress estimation on the tendons.During the first laboratory campaign, only wires were tested. The laboratory results showed that themethodology is accurate if the residual stresses are known and the load level does not influence theresults. Given that outcome, another campaign was performed, and it showed that the variations inresidual stresses within similar sample groups are not negligible (for wires residual stresses from -30 to-190 MPa, and strands from 120 to 240 MPa). If the residual stresses are considered, a constant relativeerror in the order of 20% is obtained. The saw-cut method was chosen for estimating the stresses onthe concrete. The samples tested in the laboratory were very simple, aiming to assess the accuracy ofthe procedure. The results were not satisfactory; out of twelve tests, only in one case did the testcorrectly estimate the actual stress. The in-situ testing campaign was executed on seven similarstructures to assess the applicability of the NDTs in real conditions. The research deals also with the issueof the number of samples at different levels of evaluation, based on the procedure proposed by theFederal Highway Administration (FHWA), adapted to the Italian Standards, and to different levels ofconfidence for more accurate evaluations. Finally, an overall inspection protocol is thus proposed, tryingto summarize the main outcomes of the research, by the definition of a multi-phase methodology for thespecial inspection in the assessment of PT bridges. The proposal follows the same philosophy as theItalian Guidelines, providing more effort (and tests) for the riskiest structures while tryingto optimise resources. The last part of the thesis concerns the accurate assessment, i.e. how to obtainand use inspection results for bridges requiring accurate evaluation because the special inspection didnot provide a conclusive classification of the actual safety of the bridge.

Thesis abstract: This Doctoral Thesis addresses aspects of interest for designers, promoters, owners, and managers of office buildings, with the intention of providing clarity on the Smart Building paradigm, as well as identifying decision support tools necessary to accelerate technological transformation, without underestimating the sustainable development, in the building sector. The main goal is to develop a new methodology for prioritizing investments in technological solutions for Smart Buildings, enabling an objective, transparent, traceable, and participatory distribution using sustainable development criteria throughout the various stages of a building's life cycle. To develop this the methodology three tools need to be created: (1) the Catalogue of technological solutions and (2) the Model for prioritizing technological solutions, both as decision support tools for the design and conceptualization phases, and (3) the Platform for integrating technological solutions to improve asset management during the operation phase.Firstly, a methodology for analyzing and classifying the universe of existing technological solutions applicable to the building sector is developed, with the aim of identifying their true potential and implementation requirements. This information is crucial for subsequently selecting the most suitable solutions for each project.Secondly, once the solutions are catalogued, it is essential to prioritize actions to achieve the desired Smart Building level and ensure meeting the real needs of the client and the end-users who will interact with the building. Therefore, a multicriteria model is generated to prioritize the technological solutions based on sustainable development criteria, involving end-users while relying on sector reference standards. To verify the robustness of this model, a sensitivity analysis is conducted.Thirdly, after the technological solutions are prioritized and selected, the implementation of a foundational, modular, flexible and scalable platform is necessary to ensure comprehensive management of all implemented technological solutions, both present and future. This platform aims to collect, standardize, analyze, and visualize all generated data centrally, optimizing the overall building performance. Finally, the functionality of the developed tools has been verified through two real practical applications. First in a more confined scope, such as the offices of JG Ingenieros, and then in a project for a real JG client, Simon's new corporate headquarters, SWITCH.

Quality

The Validation, Monitoring, Modification and Accreditation Framework (VSMA Framework) for official degrees ties the quality assurance processes (validation, monitoring, modification and accreditation) carried out over the lifetime of a course to two objectives—the goal of establishing coherent links between these processes, and that of achieving greater efficiency in their management—all with the overarching aim of improving programmes.
