This doctoral programme dates back to 1987, the year when doctoral programmes based on Spain’s recently enacted University Reform Law were launched. In 1994, the current programme was set up by combining the Plastics and Polymers and Structural Molecular Biology programmes, bringing together the Department’s most established research activities in two optional subject areas: polymers and biopolymers.


The Spanish Ministry of Education recognised the excellence of the programme in 2004 by granting it a quality award (MCD2004-00290). Since then, the quality award has been renewed without interruption following regular audits, and in 2011, the programme was granted a Pathway to Excellence award (MEE2011-0310), which remained in effect until 2013, when the award programme ended. The programme was associated with the UPC master’s degree in Polymers and Biopolymers and is now linked to the master’s degree in Chemical Engineering – Smart Chemical Factories (Smart Polymer Engineering, specialisation track).

The programme harnesses the research experience that the UPC has gained in the field of polymers and biopolymers over more than 40 years of continuous activity. This experience currently underpins the work of more than half a dozen recognised groups devoted exclusively to research in this field, all of which participate in the National RDI Programme, mainly in the materials area.

The doctoral programme is aimed at the polymer materials sector, which is one of the most active in the chemical industry. Polymer production continues to grow, as they replace other kinds of materials and enable technological innovations that are impossible with other materials. It is important to note that polymer materials have a special impact on science, and specifically, on the creation of advanced materials for use in a wide range of sectors from biomedicine to the electronics industry. Producing specialists capable of leading R&D projects in polymer technology is essential for competitive development.

The existence of national and international doctoral programmes in this field with similar characteristics speaks to the value and importance of this programme at the current time. In the USA, there are countless doctoral programmes that focus on polymer science and engineering. In Europe, many prestigious institutions (including the University of Manchester, University of Bayreuth, Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, and University of Lyon) offer doctoral degrees in polymers and biopolymers, generally linked to master’s degrees in the same field. Doctoral programmes in this field are also starting to take off at technology-oriented universities in Asia. Despite a high concentration of industrial activity in this sector in Catalonia, this doctoral programme is the only one focusing on polymers that is offered in the region.


The way the programme is focused facilitates the achievement of a series of objectives, enabling students to develop expertise in the field by providing:

a) Systematic, streamlined and up-to-date knowledge of the scientific and technological foundations of polymers and biopolymers.

b) Knowledge and use of bibliographic sources as required to justify, underpin and support research on topics related to polymers and biopolymers.

c) Experimental knowledge of the main methodologies applied in the manufacture, characterisation and evaluation of properties of polymers and biopolymers.

d) Scientific and technological criteria for planning, implementing and directing a basic or applied research project on any topic in the field of specialisation.

Access profile

Given the specific characteristics of the degree, the applicants considered most suitable for admission to the doctoral programme in Polymers and Biopolymers will be bachelor’s degree holders with a scientific and technological background who have completed a master's degree in Chemical Engineering or one that is related to the scientific field of the programme and includes specific content in polymers and biopolymers (structure, physical and chemical properties of polymers and biopolymers, etc.).

In addition to having suitable academic qualifications, it is considered important that applicants have certain personal characteristics – namely, an interest in the research projects carried out within the framework of the programme; critical and analytical skills; initiative, perseverance and persistence in their academic work; the ability to work in a team; and the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

Output profile

Doctoral candidates who complete a doctoral degree will have acquired the following competencies, which are needed to carry out quality research (Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January, which regulates official doctoral studies):

a) A systematic understanding of the field of study and a mastery of the research skills and methods related to the field.
b) An ability to conceive, design or create, put into practice and adopt a substantial process of research or creation.
c) An ability to contribute to pushing back the frontiers of knowledge through original research.
d) A capacity for critical analysis and an ability to assess and summarise new and complex ideas.
e) An ability to communicate with the academic and scientific community and with society in general as regards their fields of knowledge in the manner and languages that are typical of the international scientific community to which they belong.
f) An ability to foster scientific, technological, social, artistic and cultural progress in academic and professional contexts within a knowledge-based society.

The award of a doctoral degree must equip the graduate for work in a variety of settings, especially those requiring creativity and innovation. Doctoral graduates must have at least acquired the personal skills needed to:

a) Develop in contexts in which there is little specific information.
b) Find the key questions that must be answered to solve a complex problem.
c) Design, create, develop and undertake original, innovative projects in their field.
d) Work as part of a team and independently in an international or multidisciplinary context.
e) Integrate knowledge, deal with complexity and make judgements with limited information.
f) Offer criticism on and intellectually defend solutions.

Finally, with respect to competencies, doctoral students must:

a) have acquired advanced knowledge at the frontier of their discipline and demonstrated, in the context of internationally recognised scientific research, a deep, detailed and well-grounded understanding of theoretical and practical issues and scientific methodology in one or more research fields;
b) have made an original and significant contribution to scientific research in their field of expertise that has been recognised as such by the international scientific community;
c) have demonstrated that they are capable of designing a research project that serves as a framework for carrying out a critical analysis and assessment of imprecise situations, in which they are able to apply their contributions, expertise and working method to synthesise new and complex ideas that yield a deeper knowledge of the research context in which they work;
d) have developed sufficient autonomy to set up, manage and lead innovative research teams and projects and scientific collaborations (both national and international) within their field, in multidisciplinary contexts and, where appropriate, with a substantial element of knowledge transfer;
e) have demonstrated that they are able to carry out their research activity in a socially responsible manner and with scientific integrity;
f) have demonstrated, within their specific scientific context, that they are able to make cultural, social or technological advances and promote innovation in all areas within a knowledge-based society;
g) have demonstrated that they are able to participate in scientific discussions at the international level in their field of expertise and disseminate the results of their research activity to audiences of all kinds.

Based on the training they receive, students of the doctoral programme in Polymers and Biopolymers must develop the ability to lead R&D projects in the field of polymer technology. Doctoral students should acquire the knowledge and skills needed to work effectively in fields such as raw material production, production of polymeric materials, and processing and design of parts, as well as characterisation, development and application of new advanced materials, in particular biopolymers.

They are expected to develop the ability to conceive, design, implement and adapt a substantial process of research. The programme aims to equip students to contribute to extending the frontiers of knowledge through original research. Upon completing the degree, they will also be able to carry out critical and evaluative analysis and synthesise new and complex ideas. It is hoped that candidates will acquire the abilities needed to display, in academic and professional contexts, the ideas and knowledge acquired.

Duration of studies and dedication regime

Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, counted from the date of first enrolment in the relevant programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is seven years from the date of first enrolment in the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. To calculate these periods, the date of deposit is considered to be the date on which the thesis is made publicly available for review.

If a doctoral candidate has a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%, the maximum period of study is six years for full-time students and nine years for part-time students.

For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years.

When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the requirement to complete this minimum period of study.

Temporary disability leave and leave for the birth of a child, adoption or fostering for the purposes of adoption, temporary foster care, risk during pregnancy or infant feeding, gender violence and any other situation provided for in current regulations do not count towards these periods. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which must inform the Doctoral School.

Doctoral candidates may request periods of temporary withdrawal from the programme for up to a total of two years. Requests must be justified and addressed to the academic committee responsible for the programme, which will decide whether or not to grant the candidate's request.

Extension of studies
If a doctoral candidate has not applied to deposit their thesis before the expiry of the deadlines specified in the previous section, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may, at the request of the doctoral candidate, authorise an extension of this deadline of one year under the conditions specified for the doctoral programme in question.

Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:

  • The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate not having completed their annual enrolment or applied for a temporary interruption.
  • The doctoral candidate not having formalised annual enrolment on the day after the end of the authorisation to temporarily interrupt or withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate receiving a negative reassessment after the deadline set by the academic committee of the doctoral programme to remedy the deficiencies that led to a previous negative assessment.
  • The doctoral candidate having been the subject of disciplinary proceedings leading to their suspension or permanent exclusion from the UPC.
  • A refusal to authorise the extensions applied for, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.3 of these regulations.
  • The doctoral candidate not having submitted the research plan in the period established in Section 8.2 of these regulations.
  • The maximum period of study for the doctoral degree having ended, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.4 of these regulations.

Dismissal from the programme means that the doctoral candidate cannot continue studying at the UPC and that their academic record will be closed. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission, and the committee must reevaluate the candidate in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.

A doctoral candidate who has been dismissed due to having exceeded the time limit for completing doctoral studies or due to an unsatisfactory assessment may not be Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Page 17 of 33 admitted to the same doctoral programme until at least two years have elapsed from the date of dismissal, as provided for in sections 3.4 and 9.2 of these regulations.

Access requirements

As a rule, applicants must hold a Spanish bachelor's degree or equivalent and a Spanish master's degree or equivalent, provided they have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits on the two degrees (Royal Decree 43/2015, of 2 February).

Applicants who meet one or more of the following conditions are also eligible for admission:

a) Holders of official Spanish degrees or equivalent Spanish qualifications, provided they have passed 300 ECTS credits in total and they can prove they have reached Level 3 in the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education.
b) Holders of degrees awarded in foreign education systems in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), which do not require homologation, who can prove that they have reached Level 7 in the European Qualifications Framework, provided the degree makes the holder eligible for admission to doctoral studies in the country in which it was awarded.
c) Holders of degrees awarded in a country that does not belong to the EHEA, which do not require homologation, on the condition that the University is able to verify that the degree is of a level equivalent to that of official university master's degrees in Spain and that it makes the holder eligible for admission to doctoral studies in the country in which it was awarded.
d) Holders of another doctoral degree.
e) Holders of an official university qualification who, having been awarded a post as a trainee in the entrance examination for specialised medical training, have successfully completed at least two years of training leading to an official degree in a health sciences specialisation.

Admission criteria and merits assessment

Weighting of admission criteria:

1. Applicant’s curriculum vitae: Type of training and marks awarded, as well as research and professional experience (70%).
2. Personal contact through online or face-to-face interviews (15%).
3. English language skills (15%)

Admissions body
The programme has an academic committee that assesses student applications. Each month, the committee reviews applications submitted through the pre-enrolment application.

The doctoral programme has a specific form for doctoral students to indicate their scientific and technical interests. Based on this information, and taking into account the needs and capacity of research groups, the academic committee channels the applications accepted so that tutors and thesis supervisors can be assigned.

If the academic committee deems that additional training is required for an applicant to be admitted, it determines what bridging courses the student will be required to take to ensure that they have the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities (up to a maximum of 60 ECTS credits).

Training complements

The academic committee for the doctoral programme may require that students pass specific bridging courses. Additional training requirements will be determined based on each student's academic background. In such cases, the committee will keep track of the bridging courses completed and establish appropriate criteria to limit their duration.

Bridging courses may provide research or cross-disciplinary training, but in no case may doctoral students be required to enrol for 60 or more ECTS credits.

Students will complete any additional training within the framework of the master's degree in Chemical Engineering offered by the Barcelona East School of Engineering (EEBE-UPC) or by taking cross-disciplinary training courses organised by the UPC. This master's degree includes a specialisation module in Smart Polymer Engineering (SPE), which offers students the possibility of acquiring a specialisation in which the Department has a solid track record in both teaching and research.

Based on each applicant's background and the gaps in their training, bridging courses are selected from among subjects taught on the master's degree in Chemical Engineering. Applicants are informed of the bridging courses they will be required to take prior to the enrolment process. At the same time, they are also provided with information on the frequency with which courses are offered and the pertinence of their content.

The following points apply to any bridging courses that doctoral students may be required to take:

1. Bridging courses are subjects of the specified master's degree and must be administratively linked to the student’s enrolment in the doctoral degree. They may be taken in one or two semesters, depending on the student’s previous training and the frequency with which they are offered.

2. Students who do not successfully complete required bridging courses will be automatically excluded from the programme.

Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director

The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.

The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.

PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.

The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.

A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.

Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.

If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.

The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.

For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.

Permanence

The research groups participating in the programme have an established track record in research and are therefore able to offer the material, technological and scientific resources needed to carry out doctoral thesis work. In the doctoral programme, receiving training in the use of state-of-the-art technologies is of vital importance for students. Doctoral students benefit from having access to the Barcelona Research Center in Multiscale Science and Engineering and large-scale facilities such as the Alba Synchrotron (XALOC, Miras and BL11 lines), the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), and the University Services Consortium of Catalonia (CSUC).

Specific equipment for polymer research:

• Chemical synthesis laboratories: For preparation of polymers and biopolymers using chemical and electrochemical synthesis techniques.

• Physical characterisation laboratories: For characterisation of the physical properties of polymers and biopolymers using techniques such as GPC, conductivity, electrochemical properties, mechanical properties, rheological properties, etc.

• Chemical characterisation laboratories: For characterisation of the chemical properties of polymers and biopolymers using spectroscopic techniques (FTIR, Raman, UV-Vis-NIR, etc.).

• Processing laboratories: For the preparation of samples by electrospinning, electrospraying, spin coating, etc.

• Calorimetry laboratories: For characterising the thermal properties of polymers and biopolymers by means of DSC, TGA and DMTA.

    Thesis abstract: Recent advances in computational molecular modeling have significantly enhanced our understanding of protein structure and function, enabling the design and optimization of biomolecules for diverse applications, for instance in biosensing and industrial biocatalysis. This thesis aimed to leverage integration of innovative computational methodologies to investigate and modulate the functional properties of four distinct protein targets from two protein families: ion channels, specifically human acid-sensing ion channels (hASIC1a and hASIC3), and enzymes, including an artificial enzyme based on the Lactococcal Multidrug Resistance Regulator (LmrR) protein scaffold and thermophilic Streptomyces sclerotialus Tyrosine Hydroxylase (SsTyrH). Depending on the case and objectives, we employed an integration of computational protein structure prediction, molecular dynamics simulations, protein residue network analysis, an specialized ion binding site prediction tool and a machine learning-based model for functional site prediction to identify key positions involved in protein function, regulation and other relevant properties. Our findings include the discovery of novel functional regulatory sites in hASIC1a and the design of mutations that confer sustained currents in hASIC1a, the prediction of the potential calcium binding sites in hASIC3 for guiding the experimental identification and functional characterization of such regulatory positions. Furthermore, integrative computational approaches successfully led to the prediction of functional distal hotspots and improved variants in the LmrR-based enzymatic system and SsTyrH, all validated by experimental characterization. This research demonstrates the efficacy of integrating computational methodologies to engineer proteins with tailored functional properties, providing valuable insights for the development of optimized ion channels for biotechnological applications and industrial biocatalysts, as well as advancing our understanding of protein structure-function relationships.

    Thesis abstract: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) represent a critical healthcare challenge, accounting for a substantial proportion of the nosocomial infections worldwide and imposing significant economic burdens on healthcare systems through prolonged hospitalisation, additional treatments, and increased healthcare costs. These infections are primarily initiated by bacterial adhesion to catheter surfaces, followed by the formation of structured biofilms that protect pathogens against host immune defences and antimicrobial treatments. Biofilm-embedded bacteria exhibit significantly enhanced antibiotic tolerance and facilitate horizontal gene transfer, thereby accelerating the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains. Current clinical strategies, including catheter replacement, systemic antimicrobial therapy, and conventional surface coatings, often prove inadequate due to limited efficacy duration, poor selectivity, or cytotoxicity concerns. This underscores the urgent need for innovative, multifunctional, and biocompatible solutions capable of preventing biofilm establishment whilst maintaining excellent biological compatibility.The present doctoral thesis addresses these challenges through the design and development of advanced nano-enabled hydrogel-based coatings, specifically engineered to enhance the performance of urinary catheters. Innovative coatings were engineered to incorporate diverse antibacterial and antibiofilm nanomaterials, including lauryl gallate-, silver-, ceragenin-, and lignin-based nanoparticles, employing green and cost-effective methodologies such as sonochemical deposition and enzymatic grafting. These nano-actives were incorporated in bio-based and antifouling polymers including chitosan, catechol-modified gelatine, and polyzwitterions. The resulting hybrid coatings were engineered to combine synergistic contact-killing and sustained-release antimicrobial mechanisms with enhanced surface hydration and superior resistance to bacterial adhesion.Comprehensive physicochemical characterisation confirmed the successful integration of the nano-enabled coatings onto indwelling urinary catheters, revealing tailored surface morphology, high stability, and controlled release profiles of the active compound. In vitro assays demonstrated potent bactericidal activity and biofilm inhibition against clinically relevant uropathogens, including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus, under both static and dynamic flow conditions that simulate physiological environments. Cytotoxicity studies revealed high biocompatibility with human fibroblasts and keratinocytes, confirming safety for prolonged medical applications. Importantly, in vivo experiments using a rabbit catheterisation model showed significant reductions in microbial colonisation and excellent biocompatibility in animals fitted with the coated catheters, validating the protective performance of these devices under realistic physiological conditions.This thesis establishes a framework for the design and implementation of nano-enabled coatings that synergistically combine antimicrobial efficacy, biofilm resistance, and host compatibility. The findings present promising pathways for advancing next-generation urinary catheter technologies and provide a solid foundation for clinical translation, ultimately aiming to minimise CAUTI incidence and reduce the global burden of antimicrobial resistance.

    Thesis abstract: This doctoral research addresses key challenges in diabetes management by integrating sustainable materials, non-invasive sensing, and advanced insulin delivery technologies into a unified framework. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that requires continuous glucose monitoring and precise insulin administration to maintain glycemic control and reduce complications. Responding to these needs, the thesis is structured around three major contributions.First, the work advances the development of a previously created non-invasive glucose-monitoring device by incorporating recycled low-density polyethylene (LDPE) into the sensor design. The use of recycled LDPE improves sustainability, cost-efficiency, and environmental compatibility while maintaining reliable sensing performance. This demonstrates the feasibility of repurposing plastic waste in biomedical technologies without compromising functionality.Second, the research explores new strategies for controlled insulin delivery through stimuli-responsive hydrogels. Hydrogels based on poly(γ-glutamic acid) and multi-armed polyethylene glycol (PEG) were engineered to achieve sustained and tunable insulin release. The incorporation of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), a biocompatible conducting polymer, enables electrically triggered and on-demand insulin delivery. This approach offers a minimally invasive alternative to conventional injection-based therapies and highlights the potential of electro-responsive materials in smart drug-delivery systems.Finally, the thesis investigates the nanomechanical properties of multi-armed PEG hydrogels using a microcantilever-based optomechanical sensor. This analysis provides essential insights into the structural behavior, stability, and long-term performance of the hydrogels, contributing to the optimization of their mechanical robustness and responsiveness.Together, these contributions form a comprehensive strategy for improving diabetes care. By integrating non-invasive monitoring, environmentally conscious materials, and intelligent delivery platforms, the research promotes more sustainable biomedical solutions while advancing patient-centered therapeutic tools.
