Optical Engineering
The aim of the doctoral programme is to provide training leading to a doctoral degree for Spanish and international students who have completed a university qualification in the field of optics and optometry. The students could prepare a doctoral thesis in an area of optics and optometry and will benefit from the experience of the various research groups that work in these fields.
The growing importance of optics and optometry make doctoral training in this field increasingly necessary and attractive, to develop a high-level of specialisation in associated areas. To develop this high-quality, multidisciplinary doctoral programme, the knowledge of various departments and research groups was required, so that more aspects of optical engineering and optometry could be addressed.

Duration of studies and dedication regime
Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, counted from the date of first enrolment in the relevant programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is seven years from the date of first enrolment in the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. To calculate these periods, the date of deposit is considered to be the date on which the thesis is made publicly available for review.
If a doctoral candidate has a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%, the maximum period of study is six years for full-time students and nine years for part-time students.
For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years.
When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the requirement to complete this minimum period of study.
Temporary disability leave and leave for the birth of a child, adoption or fostering for the purposes of adoption, temporary foster care, risk during pregnancy or infant feeding, gender violence and any other situation provided for in current regulations do not count towards these periods. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which must inform the Doctoral School.
Doctoral candidates may request periods of temporary withdrawal from the programme for up to a total of two years. Requests must be justified and addressed to the academic committee responsible for the programme, which will decide whether or not to grant the candidate's request.
Extension of studies
If a doctoral candidate has not applied to deposit their thesis before the expiry of the deadlines specified in the previous section, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may, at the request of the doctoral candidate, authorise an extension of this deadline of one year under the conditions specified for the doctoral programme in question.
Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:
- The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
- The doctoral candidate not having completed their annual enrolment or applied for a temporary interruption.
- The doctoral candidate not having formalised annual enrolment on the day after the end of the authorisation to temporarily interrupt or withdraw from the programme.
- The doctoral candidate receiving a negative reassessment after the deadline set by the academic committee of the doctoral programme to remedy the deficiencies that led to a previous negative assessment.
- The doctoral candidate having been the subject of disciplinary proceedings leading to their suspension or permanent exclusion from the UPC.
- A refusal to authorise the extensions applied for, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.3 of these regulations.
- The doctoral candidate not having submitted the research plan in the period established in Section 8.2 of these regulations.
- The maximum period of study for the doctoral degree having ended, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.4 of these regulations.
Dismissal from the programme means that the doctoral candidate cannot continue studying at the UPC and that their academic record will be closed. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission, and the committee must reevaluate the candidate in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.
A doctoral candidate who has been dismissed due to having exceeded the time limit for completing doctoral studies or due to an unsatisfactory assessment may not be Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Page 17 of 33 admitted to the same doctoral programme until at least two years have elapsed from the date of dismissal, as provided for in sections 3.4 and 9.2 of these regulations.

Access requirements
As a rule, applicants must hold a Spanish bachelor's degree or equivalent and a Spanish master's degree or equivalent, provided they have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits on the two degrees (Royal Decree 43/2015, of 2 February).
Applicants who meet one or more of the following conditions are also eligible for admission:
a) Holders of official Spanish degrees or equivalent Spanish qualifications, provided they have passed 300 ECTS credits in total and they can prove they have reached Level 3 in the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education.
b) Holders of degrees awarded in foreign education systems in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), which do not require homologation, who can prove that they have reached Level 7 in the European Qualifications Framework, provided the degree makes the holder eligible for admission to doctoral studies in the country in which it was awarded.
c) Holders of degrees awarded in a country that does not belong to the EHEA, which do not require homologation, on the condition that the University is able to verify that the degree is of a level equivalent to that of official university master's degrees in Spain and that it makes the holder eligible for admission to doctoral studies in the country in which it was awarded.
d) Holders of another doctoral degree.
e) Holders of an official university qualification who, having been awarded a post as a trainee in the entrance examination for specialised medical training, have successfully completed at least two years of training leading to an official degree in a health sciences specialisation.
Note 1: Regulations for access to doctoral studies for individuals with degrees in bachelor's, engineering, or architecture under the system prior to the implementation of the EHEA (CG 47/02 2014).

Legal framework
Admission criteria and merits assessment
The academic committee of the doctoral programme in Optical Engineering will apply the following selection and weighting criteria. At all times it will respect the principles of merit and equal opportunities:
• Academic record (weighting: 55%).
• Contact through interviews (personal, telephone, internet, etc.) (weighting: 10%).
• Motivation (weighting: 15%).
• Language knowledge (weighting: 10%).
• Research experience (weighting: 5%).
• Related completed postgraduate programmes (weighting: 5 %).
Personal contact is made through an interview in which the applicant’s attitude, interest in the subject, ability to work in a team and spoken communication skills are assessed, among other factors. As many applicants are living in other countries when they apply for admission to the programme, interviews can be carried out from a distance using the new tools provided by the internet.
Motivation will be assessed in a written report in which students should describe their personal, professional and academic reasons for requesting admission to the programme. This report should be attached on the admissions intranet system.
In the section on language knowledge, merit will be given for languages that are of interest to the programme such as English, Spanish and Catalan.
Training complements
The academic committee for the programme may require that doctoral students pass specific bridging courses. In this case, it will monitor the bridging courses that are taken and establish suitable criteria to limit their duration.
The bridging courses will be on research training, but doctoral students will never be asked to enrol for a number equal to or above 60 ECTS. The academic regulations of doctoral studies state that bridging courses may also be cross-disciplinary. However, this point is likely to be amended so that bridging courses are only associated with research credits, particularly when an applicant enters the doctoral programme with a bachelor’s degree worth 300 ECTS.
Considering the doctoral student activity report (DAD), the academic committee of the programme could propose additional measures to those established in the regulations that lead to the withdrawal of doctoral students who do not meet the established criteria.
The university master’s degrees that provide direct access to the programme without the need for bridging courses are:
• master's degree in Photonics
• Erasmus Mundus doctoral degree in Photonics Engineering, Nanophotonics and Biophotonics
• master's degree in Optometry and Vision Sciences.
• master's degree in Bioengineering
• master's degree in Biomedical Engineering
• European Master of Science in Research on Information and Communication Technologies
Students who hold a master’s degree in science and technology subjects other than the above, such as:
- master’s degree in the areas of industrial engineering, computer engineering or equivalent
- master’s degrees in the areas of physical sciences, biomedicine or equivalents
The academic committee of the doctoral programme will analyse the subjects that applicants have passed in their previous bachelor’s degree and master’s degree studies and assess their relation with the area of optics, so that they can determine whether they need to take bridging courses. If students have to take bridging courses, the research line and research group in which they will prepare the doctoral thesis will be considered, according to the procedure explained in Section 3.2. Bridging courses can be taken during the first year.
Bridging courses are selected mainly from the master’s degree in Photonics, directly linked to the programme.
Below, the subjects from this master’s degree are listed that are most suitable for bridging courses in the doctoral programme in Optical Engineering:
• Laser Systems and Applications: 3 ECTS
• Building Optomechanical Systems: 3 ECTS
• Managing Light with Devices: 3 ECTS
• Measuring with Light: 3 ECTS
• Nonlinear Optics: 3 ECTS
• Visual Biophotonics and Multispectral Imaging: 3 ECTS
• Image Processing in Biophotonics: 3 ECTS

Monitoring and evaluation of the doctoral student
Procedure for the preparation and defense of the research plan
Doctoral candidates must submit a research plan, which will be included in their doctoral student activity report, before the end of the first year. The plan may be improved over the course of the doctoral degree. It must be endorsed by the tutor and the supervisor, and it must include the method that is to be followed and the aims of the research.
At least one of these annual assessments will include a public presentation and defence of the research plan and work done before a committee composed of three doctoral degree holders, which will be conducted in the manner determined by each academic committee. The examination committee awards a Pass or Fail mark. A Pass mark is a prerequisite for continuing on the doctoral programme. Doctoral candidates awarded a Fail mark must submit a new research plan for assessment by the academic committee of the doctoral programme within six months.
The committee assesses the research plan every year, in addition to all of the other activities in the doctoral student activity report. Doctoral candidates who are awarded two consecutive Fail marks for the research plan will be obliged to definitely withdraw from the programme.
If they change the subject of their thesis, they must submit a new research plan.

Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director
The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.
The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.
PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.
The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.
A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.
Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.
If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.
The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.
For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.
Permanence

Learning resources
The doctoral programme in Optical Engineering is taught continuously and satisfactorily. Students have access to material resources (research laboratories, offices, specific research resources, computer resources, a mechanical and electronic workshop) belonging to the department and CD6 research centre that are involved. General UPC services are also available (computer, audiovisual, university libraries).
The GOAPI research group is situated in the Department of Optics and Optometry in the TR8 building of the Terrassa Campus, UPC. It has two research laboratories (a total of 114 m²) equipped for optical and digital image processing and other optical signals, and funded through public and private projects. It also has an office exclusively for doctoral students (25 m²). In addition, doctoral students can use meeting rooms and classrooms of various sizes in the TR8 building for meetings, courses or seminars. All these rooms are fully equipped.
The GREO research group is in CD6, housed in the TR11 building of the Terrassa Campus of the UPC. It has five research laboratories (a total of 310 m²), equipped with the basic and specialised material required to carry out the projects that are undertaken there, funded through public and private research projects. It also has a prototype room of 60 m² for the integration, adjustment and testing of devices designed and constructed in CD6. It is situated close to the workshops and has all the services required for its function. For grantholders, there is an office exclusively for doctoral students (60 m²) and an office shared with the teaching and research staff (80 m²). In addition, in CD6 there are two meeting rooms and a classroom-library where meetings, courses and seminars are held. All of these areas are perfectly equipped.
In addition, the mechanical and electronic workshops of the Department of Optics and Optometry are found in CD6. These workshops occupy a total space of 110 m² and have cutting-edge equipment to support the design and construction of projects. The mechanical workshop has machine tools and measuring instruments that are suitable for the work that is carried out. The electronics workshop has development tools for families of microcontrollers of 8 and 16 bits and to develop programmable logic, types CPLD and FPGA.
The DONLL research group is in the Gaia (TR14) research building of the Terrassa Campus, UPC. It has two research laboratories (total of 50 m²) that are fully equipped to carry out nonlinear optical and laser dynamics experiments (optical spectrum analyser, RF analyser, oscilloscope, signal generators, etc.), funded through public and private projects.. It also has three offices for doctoral students (50 m²). Doctoral students can also use two meeting rooms (Gaia building) and classrooms (in ETSEIAT) of various sizes, for meetings, courses and seminars. All of these are perfectly equipped (one room has videoconference equipment).
The VOS emerging research group (Vision, Optometry and Health) is in the Clínica Universitaria de la Visión (CUV; TR30), where much of the research work is carried out. The members of the VOS have various units available to them that are perfectly equipped to carry out mainly clinical research. Some notable units are those of Vision and Learning, Contact Lenses and Low Vision.
Finally, the TIEG research group is situated in the TR2 building of the Terrassa Campus, UPC. It has five research laboratories (a total of 135 m²), equipped with the basic and specialised material required to carry out the projects that are undertaken there, funded through public and private research projects. It also has an office shared with teaching and research staff for doctoral students.
All the research groups earmark part of their funding from public and private projects for doctoral students, so that they can complement their training by attending conferences, seminars and other training activities; and participate in meetings of thematic networks, projects, workshops, etc. Another factor that favours the mobility of doctoral students is that the programme belongs to various thematic networks. In addition, for several years, our doctoral students have benefited from mobility grants that have been awarded by the Ministry of Education. As the programme has an Excellence Award, the students have also taken part in specific calls to promote the mobility of students and lecturers.

Thesis abstract: Due to advanced diagnostic instruments for detection of early-stage keratoconus (KC), and procedures that halt its progression such as corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL), optometry clinics are now seeing less severe cases of irregular corneas. As a result, optometrists are treating earlier stages of KC, and contact lens (CL) solutions for earlier stages of the disease are warranted. This thesis comprehensively evaluated the utility of two specialty soft lenses for KC of varying diameters and thicknesses in 40 eyes (N=20, mean age: 39±10, range: 23-55 yrs.) with KC grade 1 or 2 (based on Amsler-Krumeich) using a randomized, crossover, prospective longitudinal (up to one year follow-up) clinical design. The visual quality, contrast sensitivity, higher order aberrations (HOA), subjective satisfaction and wearer preference were compared between SoftK2 and Semi-scleral SoftK lenses. Objective visual outcomes were also compared with those obtained with gold-standard RGP lenses. Both soft lens designs significantly improved high contrast visual acuity (SoftK2 0.05±0.07, Semi-scleral SoftK 0.10±0.09LogMAR) compared with the habitual state (0.23±0.27 LogMAR). SoftK2 lenses provided low contrast VA 0.29±0.15 LogMAR), high contrast VA (0.04±0.06 LogMAR), contrast sensitivity (1.55±0.12 Log units), and HOA similar to GP lenses (low contrast visual acuity 0.27±0.17 Log MAR, high contrast visual acuity 0.07±0.07 LogMAR and contrast sensitivity 1.55±0.10 LogCS units). With low contrast, Semi- scleral SoftK did not show statistical significance compered to SoftK2 and from habitual state (0.40±0.2 Semi-scleral SoftK 0.52±0.3 habitual). No adverse events, limbal or conjunctival redness, papillary reaction, unusual appearances, or patient complaints requiring clinical action were noted at any of the follow-up visits with either lens type. The SoftK2 lens was preferred by 75% of the participants and had fewer participants with reported adverse events of dryness sensation after two weeks of wear. More participants continued its use over a period of 12-month with SoftK2 (7 participants were still using SoftK2 after 12 months, while no one was with Semi- scleral SoftK).SoftK2, Semi-scleral SoftK, and scleral GP lenses showed significant improvements of coma, trefoil, and tetrafoil HOAs compared to the uncorrected state, without significant differences between the lenses. SoftK2 and Semi-scleral SoftK lenses induced corneal swelling with clinically significant values in the periphery (7%-9% higher than the habitual state), which implies careful monitoring of eventual physiological adaptation changes to sustained hypoxia induced by the lens over time. The soft lenses were expected to only partially correct the refractive error of the KC participants leaving a small residual astigmatism. Since no clinical test currently exists to detect alterations in visual perception due to residual uncorrected astigmatism, an early part of the dissertation, was devoted to examining the utility of a novel test developed by Prof. Arnold Wilkins (UK), theWilkins Egg and Ball Test (WEBT) to address this question. The results of the WEBT were compared between three cohorts: 32 normal participants (mean age: 24±5) under baseline and induced cylinder ,22 keratoconic eyes (N=13, mean age: 36±12) and 23 astigmatic participants (mean age: 36±12). The WEBT was found to be sensitive to overall blur and not to residual astigmatic blur. Its measurements with Soft K2 compared with Semi-scleral SoftK lenses were not significantly different. We conclude that specialty soft lens designs for keratoconus are a viable alternative for KC patients with Stage 1 or 2 in terms of visual quality and tolerance. However, more research is needed to evaluate the long term eventual physiological implications of induced corneal swelling.

Thesis abstract: Introduction: Non-compliance in the use and care of contact lenses (CLs) and their accessories is a major clinical problem, and although there have been notable scientific advances in the designs and materials of CLs, in the maintenance solutions and accessories of the CLs, user non-compliance persists, and is associated with potentially serious ocular complications and abandonment of CL. A preliminary bibliographic search showed that there is no published research on compliance in the use and care of CLs in Spain. Therefore, the study which originates this doctoral thesis sought to analyze different factors related to the compliance of CL users in Spain and the guidelines established by vision professionals and CL manufacturers. Areas of investigation: This doctoral thesis is based on different areas of research, all of them related to compliance in the use and handling of CLs and accessories. After an exhaustive literature search, several questionnaires were designed: three of them were aimed at CL users, where the habits of use and care of the CLs, the lens case and maintenance solutions, and the factors that influence these habits, were identified and the subjective perception, risk awareness and knowledge of CL users were explored; An additional questionnaire was addressed to optometrists (O-O), to identify areas in which information provided to CL users was insufficient or incomplete. The study on compliance of CL users during COVID-19 showed a diversity of non-compliance practices during confinement, such as incorrect hand washing and drying, extension of CL use and maintenance solutions, cleaning and incorrect replacement of the lens case and improper use of CLs at night. Research devoted to analyze lens case hygiene and replacement documented limited compliance with cleaning and replacement procedures: 68.6% of users indicated that they brought the cases into contact with tap water during insertion or removal of CLs, for example; or 59.1% revealed that, when cleaning the case, it was not dried in the open air, without the lid and upside down. In the study on hand cleaning during handling of CLs and their accessories, it was found that 17.8% of users did not perform hand hygiene, either due to forgetfulness (80%), laziness, haste or thinking that it was not necessary. Likewise, the communication and information provided by the O-O to the CL user was investigated, finding an insufficiency of information in the fields of hygiene and replacement of the CL and the lens case. At the same time, little use of informed consent was documented by the surveyed Spanish O-Os, unlike their English counterparts. Finally, different smartphone applications and free educational videos aimed at CL users were analysed and significant shortcomings and limitations were detected, so an ideal App prototype was designed. In the future, its effectiveness as a compliance improvement tool will be investigated. Conclusions: The results obtained in this thesis show that there are certain areas of the use and care of CL and accessories with marked non-compliance, often related to ignorance or lack of detailed information. Optometrists are recommended to improve communication and implement informative reminders for CL users, effectively using follow-up visits and different instant messaging tools. Likewise, the widespread implementation of informed consent in all CL adaptations can be interpreted as a formal contract between O-O and users and have a positive impact on compliance.

Thesis abstract: An intraocular lens (IOL) is an implant that is used in cataract surgery to replace the clouded natural lens (cataract) and restore the loss of transparency. Currently, there is a wide variety of designs, brands, and models of IOLs available on the market, which can be classified, according to the number of foci and physical principle of each design, into monofocal, multifocal, and extended range of vision (ERV). This thesis focuses on the evaluation of the optical quality of IOLs and the methods employed to determine it using an eye model as an image-forming system on an optical bench.Optical characterisation of an IOL on an optical bench allows its performance to be measured, before implantation, in conditions close to those required by visual function. This analysis is conducted under controlled conditions of variables such as pupillary size or spherical aberration (SA), which provides good repeatability to the tests. This approach enables objective comparisons between different IOL designs and models, as well as facilitating personalised selection, in accordance with the patient's requirements. For this purpose, an optical device previously designed by the research group has been employed, which adheres to the recommendations set forth in the ISO 11979-2:2014 standard. Meanwhile, the construction, characterisation and commissioning of a new experimental setup, which incorporates a model eye closer to the human eye, has been carried out. This configuration comprises units that permit the control of the optical input information of the test object and the light beam, an adaptive optics (AO) system, and a matrix sensor with a spectral sensitivity close to that of the standard observer in photopic vision. The characterisation of the subsystems and specific components of the assemblies has enabled the determination of their working conditions, with the knowledge and control of their performance. Once the IOL had been placed in the eye model, its optical quality was analysed using objective metrics under a variety of working conditions. Particular attention was paid to image quality and the effects of multifocality and aberrations on its degradation. The potential formation of halos has also been assessed, given the clinical significance of dysphotopic effects. The incorporation of the AO system has enabled the simulation of corneal astigmatism (including IOL rotation errors onceimplanted) and corneas with different degrees of SA, reproducing practical and realistic cases of clinical interest (forexample, corneas undergoing refractive surgery prior to IOL implantation). The research findings provide the values achieved by the lenses under study – 16 IOL models of different des ign and provided by five manufacturers – in a s et of optical quality metrics, as well as their evolution from distance vision to near vision. By means of characterisation, it has been possible to estimate the average postoperative visual acuity values over the full range of vision and to predict the depth of field (with visual acuity 0.2 logMAR or better), thus enabling a comparison with clinical results obtained using defocus curves. Information derived from both optical and clinical methodologies constitutes a valuable contribution to the field of cataract surgery with IOL implantation. This information can be used for a variety of purposes, including the selection of lenses, the design of new products, their manufacture, and quality control. Furthermore, these advances reaffirm the importance of considering the individual characteristics of each patient when selecting the most appropriate IOL.

Thesis abstract: In recent times, there has been a growing interest in LiDAR imaging systems for outdoor applications involving computer vision, such as automotive systems, surveillance, and robotics. LiDAR sensors have the ability to capture 3D data, that is, the geometry (volume, distances) of the scenes involved, complementing the 2D projections of scenes available in conventional cameras. However, their limited tolerance to adverse weather conditions, particularly fog, stays as one of the obstacles that hinders their complete settlement. This Thesis aims to evaluate the potential of utilizing the polarization properties of light and the digitization of the signal to improve the system’s imaging capabilities in such challenging conditions. Additionally, our research offers valuable insights in the domain of imaging through fog. Understanding the interaction of polarized light with turbid media and recognizing the importance of the targets’ polarimetric properties within the imaged scene is essential for optimizing the performance of polarimetric imaging systems. To achieve our goal, a preliminary investigation to examine the characteristics of polarimetric imaging through fog is undertaken. Our findings indicate that polarimetric imaging modes provide higher contrast compared to intensity-based imaging modes, facilitating the identification and segmentation of different targets. Additionally, experimental characterization of the depolarizing behavior of light through fog is conducted for both reflection and transmission imaging modes. The results suggest that, in this scenario, light behavior falls within the scattering regime of the polarization memory effect, with a significantly reduced depolarization in circularly polarized beams when compared to linearly polarized ones. To the best of our knowledge, this Thesis quantifies for the first time the differences between the performance of both polarization modes in fog conditions. Next, a Monte Carlo-based model is developed to meet the requirements of our LiDAR prototype. Considering the resource-intensive nature of experiments conducted in fog conditions and the dynamic nature of fog, the model’s ability to accurately simulate the physics of the problem, including a realistic fog environment, helps to guide the definition of the future experimental actions. Subsequently, the model is utilized to simulate and analyze various aspects relevant to the design of the system, including polarization configurations, interactions with targets, and irregularities in the media (in practice, generalizing the scattering media beyond fog to e.g. sand or smog), together with the characteristics of the acquired signal. Finally, this Thesis presents a novel polarized LiDAR imager prototype and evaluates its performance in fog conditions. It conclusively shows that using circularly polarized light and a cross-configuration detection setup significantly improves system performance in such scenarios. This system effectively tackles challenges induced by scattered light, reducing saturation effects from backscattering, mitigating scattering noise in point clouds, and enhancing target detection, especially for highly reflective surfaces like metallic targets. This approach offers an innovative, straightforward, and efficient method for signal stabilization and enhancement of the point cloud quality by relying on the inherent physics of the problem.

Thesis abstract: Neurofibromatoses (NF) are a group of three related but genetically distinct disorders of the nervous system that cause tumors to grow around nerves. The tumors originate in the cells that make up the myelin sheath, a thin membrane that surrounds and protects nerve fibers, and often spread to adjacent areas. The type of tumor that develops depends on its location in the body and the type of cells involved. The most common tumors are neurofibromas, which develop in the tissue surrounding peripheral nerves. Most tumors are non-cancerous, although they can occasionally become cancerous over time. The exact cause of these tumors is not fully understood, but it appears to be primarily related to mutations in genes that play key roles in suppressing tumor growth in the nervous system. These mutations lead to the NF1 and NF2 genes no longer producing specific proteins that control cell production. Without these proteins, cells multiply uncontrollably and form tumors. There are three types of neurofibromatosis: NF1, NF2, and Schwannomatosis. NF1 is a rare disease with an incidence of 2500-3000 live newborns. This type of disease produces alterations in the whole body, being at ophthalmologic level, Lisch nodules, optic pathway glioma, orbital neurofibroma and alterations in the choroid as the most frequent. Optic pathway glioma can produce a decrease in visual acuity and/or visual field, so early detection is important to apply the recommended treatment and thus avoid vision loss.In this study, we specifically investigated the visual pathway in pediatric patients with NF1 aged 0 to 18 years. We included patients who were seen at the ophthalmology department of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona. To assess the quality of life of these patients, we used two different life questionnaires based on age. For patients aged 6 months to 7 years, we used the CVFQ test, with a specific version for patients aged 6 months to 3 years and another version for those aged 4 to 7 years. For the age group of patients aged 8 to 18 years, we used the IVI-C test. Before using it in our sample, we first conducted validation and cultural adaptation of the test.In addition to assessing the quality of life in patients with NF1, the feasibility of including choroidal nodule detection using the Triton OCT DRI SS-OCT instrument (Topcon Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) as a clinical criterion for diagnosis and disease monitoring has been studied. It has been concluded that this equipment lacks sufficient sensitivity to detect these nodules. If choroidal nodules were to be included in the clinical diagnostic criteria for the condition, an infrared technology-equipped device would be needed for precise detection. In this sample, the visual pathway function has been studied by measuring visual acuity using age recommended tests and examining retinal layers through Triton OCT DRI SS-OCT optical coherence tomography. The data have been processed using machine learning to predict the possibility of irreversible visual loss. Necessary cutoff points have been identified to raise suspicion of visual deterioration in clinical practice. The most sensitive layer has been found to be the ganglion cell layer, which can be examined both in the macular region and the optic nerve zone. These findings impact the therapeutic monitoring of these patients. Currently, treatment is initiated once visual deterioration is diagnosed based on visual acuity, visual field, or the appearance/growth of optic pathway tumors using magnetic resonance imaging. This study suggests considering treatment when patients are in the suspected visual deterioration zone based on OCT findings, before actual visual acuity decline occurs, thus improving prognosis.

Thesis abstract: When an object of interest is detected in the visual field, a saccadic movement is made and the attention and gaze are centred on it. During this visual fixation, optokinetic eye movement occurs to maintain the retinal image position stable and, at the same time, small fixational eye movements take place. Vestibular eye movements also take part in this action to guarantee the accurate stabilization of the eyes during rotations and translations of the head. If the object of interest moves in the frontal plane, smooth pursuit eye movements allow the eyes to follow the object as it is moving. If the object moves in depth, vergence eye movements align the two eyes with the target at different distances. Specifically, the vergence system, which controls binocular alignment, aligns both foveae with the object of interest allowing fusion of the retinal images into a single percept. Vergence eye movements will be described in a greater detail in this Thesis as they are the most relevant types of eye movements for the purpose of this Thesis.Phoropter rotary prisms and prism bars are commonly used to evaluate the amplitude of both the positive (convergence) and the negative (divergence) fusional vergence amplitudes, measuring the blur, break, and recovery of single vision points. The blur point informs about the amount of relative fusional vergence that can be stimulated without the intervention of accommodation. The break point assesses the total amplitude of fusional vergence amplitudes, and the recovery point indicates the patient’s ability to recover single binocular vision after diplopia occurs. These two tests are subjective and depend on the answers of the patients, optometrist’s experience, manual dexterity, and examination criteria, which leads to variability of the results and poor repeatability. One of the purposes of this PhD Thesis is to evaluate objectively the fusional vergence amplitudes and compare the results with the conventional subjective clinical tests. Vision therapy or vision training, also called, orthoptics has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for convergence (CI), among other binocular dysfunctions. The objective of this treatment is to increase the amplitude, speed, accuracy of accommodative and vergence responses, and the visual comfort. Since 1855, vision therapy has been the primary treatment for CI and there are validated protocols to improve the abilities of the binocular vision system. The objective monitoring of the effectiveness of this treatment for normal binocular vision participants is a novelty of this PhD Thesis. In this PhD Thesis, vergence responses are evaluatep in a subjective and an objective way using conventional procedures and the eye tracker EyeLink 1000 Plus (SR Research Ltd., Ontario, Canada). The main purpose of this PhD Thesis is to assess objectively the effectiveness of a conventional vision therapy protocol for training vergence responses

Thesis abstract: Uncorrected refractive error is the main cause of visual impairment worldwide, with its incidence being even bigger in developing countries, where access to eye care is severely limited, mainly due to a shortage of clinicians. Currently, the gold standard for assessing refraction and prescribing glasses is subjective refraction, which stands out for considering the psychophysical response of the subjects and for incorporating a series of steps to properly control accommodation. However, this procedure requires a trained clinician. Automated systems that do not require trained professionals are a potential solution to the shortage of clinicians. Unfortunately, existing systems and recently developed technologies are still not satisfactory enough to perform at the same level as the gold standard. The two main challenges with these technologies are the poor control of accommodation and that some of them do not consider the subject’s perception. This thesis aims to study accommodation during refraction procedures and to propose a methodology capable of retrieving refraction without the need for a clinician. The thesis is divided into four studies. The first study centers on the validation of a system capable of monitoring accommodation in real time. Using a custom-developed Hartmann-Shack aberrometer coupled to a phoropter, the system allows tracking the refractive state of the eye every 100 ms. The system was validated by analyzing the through-focus accommodative response. The results of this study show that the system is capable of successfully measuring the refractive state of the eye dynamically and the measurements are comparable to the ones reported in other studies. The second study explores the accommodative response during the fogging technique. It focuses on the impact of the power and time of application of fogging lenses on accommodation relaxation. Its results show that fogging lenses do provide some relaxation of accommodation, although high variability between participants was found, suggesting that there is no ideal formula that can suit all patients. The third study analyzes how accommodation and visual acuity behave during subjective refraction. Results show that accommodation is not at its minimum when reaching the subjective refraction value. The findings suggest that new automated technologies should not rely only on achieving the best visual acuity or the minimum accommodation. The final study explores the use of a machine learning algorithm to predict the spherical equivalent subjective refraction using as input data a through-focus accommodative response, optical quality metrics, and subject perception data. The machine learning models demonstrated promising performance, improving upon previously proposed methods. The study also highlights the need for new refraction systems to account for accommodation control and incorporate subjective feedback for more accurate prescriptions. In summary, the thesis made significant progress in understanding accommodation during refraction procedures and demonstrates the potential of machine learning for predicting subjective refraction.

Thesis abstract: In this doctoral thesis, significant strides have been made in the realm of biofluid flow sensing through the innovative integration of Self-Mixing Interferometry (SMI) with confocal microscopy principles, resulting in a revolutionary technology known as Confocal Self-Mixing Interferometry (CSMI). This groundbreaking approach addresses the critical need for accurate, real-time, non-invasive, and cost-effective methods for evaluating biofluid dynamics within the human body.CSMI demonstrates its exceptional ability to distinguish flow rates across various sample depths within a laboratory setting, opening doors multifaceted applications across diverse domains.By employing a highly scattering fluid simulating blood, the system successfully measured flow rates ranging from 0.2 to 1.6mL/min within microcapillaries. Importantly, it achieved a maximum velocity measurement of approximately 307 mm/s, well within the range of average maximum blood flow velocities in human vessels. The confocal measurements exhibited clear Doppler frequency peaks at the microcapillary center across all pumping rate values, overcoming the limitations faced by non-confocal measurements for higher flow rates. This research produced results that provide insight into depth sectioning. A two-step process, involving lateral scanning and depth sectioning, was employed to reconstruct the velocity profile of the entire microcapillary at a pumping rate of 0.5 mL/min. While some challenges were encountered near the microcapillary walls due to low-frequency interference, the study effectively established the alignment of theoretical Hagen-Poiseuille profiles with CSMI measurements, validating the system's capabilities. Moreover, this research presents a significant achievement in terms of Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) improvement. By implementing a stationary reflector in a secondary optical path, it was possible to maintain an adequate SNR in SMI configurations with reduced optical output power. This advancement holds promising applications in non-invasive measurements of individual living cells, microorganisms, or micro-particles, spanning various fields, including medicine, entomology, botany, cytopathology, and other health sciences. This research reaffirms the potential of CSMI as a transformative tool for diagnosing and forecasting diseases associated with abnormalities in bodily fluids. It not only excels in intrinsically-induced disruptions in blood flow, such as angiogenesis and thrombosis, but also in scenarios involving extrinsic factors like traumas and burns. The versatility of this technology can be extended to cell biology applications and point-of-care (PoC) analysis.

Quality
The Validation, Monitoring, Modification and Accreditation Framework (VSMA Framework) for official degrees ties the quality assurance processes (validation, monitoring, modification and accreditation) carried out over the lifetime of a course to two objectives—the goal of establishing coherent links between these processes, and that of achieving greater efficiency in their management—all with the overarching aim of improving programmes.
Validation
- Verification Memory (Doctoral Programme) - 2013
- Verification Resolution (MECD)
- Agreement of the Council of Ministers (BOE)
