Background:

This doctoral programme was first offered in the academic year 1986-1987. At the time, the name of the programme was Water Engineering. The programme, organised by the Department of Engineering Design of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, was offered under this name in the academic years 1986-1987 and 1987-1988. In the 1988-1989 academic year, the degree was renamed the doctoral programme in Environmental Engineering. From the 1989-1990 academic year, the programme was delivered mainly at the Institute of Applied Petrochemistry (IPA) and later at the Institute of Environmental Modelling and Technology (ITEMA), both institutes of the UPC. Since May 1999, the doctoral degree has been an interdepartmental programme. For organisational purposes, it is currently based at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. This degree can be considered the first doctoral programme in environmental engineering offered in Spain.

Based on a call issued in February 1995, the Directorate-General for Higher Education of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science included the doctoral programme in Environmental Engineering on a list of high-quality doctoral degrees.

Objectives:

The aim of this programme is to enable doctoral students to acquire research skills in the field of environmental engineering, particularly in the following research areas: environmental modelling (atmospheric and water quality), waste management, environmental impact assessment, environmental management systems, noise, industrial wastewater, groundwater, remediation of contaminated soils, and treatment technologies.

Competencies that must be acquired by students (based on the Dublin descriptors). Students must:

• demonstrate systematic understanding of a field of study of the programme and mastery of the skills and methods of research associated with that field;
• demonstrate the ability to conceive, design, implement and adapt a substantial process of research with scholarly integrity;
• have made a contribution through original research that extends the frontier of knowledge by developing a substantial body of work, some of which merits national or international refereed publication;
• be capable of critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas;
• be able to communicate with their peers, the larger scholarly community and society in general about their areas of expertise;
• be able to promote, in academic and professional contexts, technological, social or cultural advancement in a knowledge-based society.

Rationale:

In the contemporary world, the importance of environmental issues, both locally and at the global level, is beyond dispute. The importance of environmental issues was clearly recognised in three key Earth Summits: the UN Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm, Sweden in June 1972; the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in June 1992; and the World Summit on Sustainable Development (informally known as “Rio+10”) held in Johannesburg, South Africa in August–September 2002. The problem of climate change, for which there is conclusive scientific evidence, and the legal framework defined in the Kyoto Protocol also underscore the pressing need to tackle environmental issues. All of these factors clearly justify the need for a doctoral programme that provides students with advanced research training in these areas.

Duration of studies and dedication regime

Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, counted from the date of first enrolment in the relevant programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is seven years from the date of first enrolment in the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. To calculate these periods, the date of deposit is considered to be the date on which the thesis is made publicly available for review.

If a doctoral candidate has a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%, the maximum period of study is six years for full-time students and nine years for part-time students.

For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years.

When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the requirement to complete this minimum period of study.

Temporary disability leave and leave for the birth of a child, adoption or fostering for the purposes of adoption, temporary foster care, risk during pregnancy or infant feeding, gender violence and any other situation provided for in current regulations do not count towards these periods. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which must inform the Doctoral School.

Doctoral candidates may request periods of temporary withdrawal from the programme for up to a total of two years. Requests must be justified and addressed to the academic committee responsible for the programme, which will decide whether or not to grant the candidate's request.

Extension of studies
If a doctoral candidate has not applied to deposit their thesis before the expiry of the deadlines specified in the previous section, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may, at the request of the doctoral candidate, authorise an extension of this deadline of one year under the conditions specified for the doctoral programme in question.

Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:

  • The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate not having completed their annual enrolment or applied for a temporary interruption.
  • The doctoral candidate not having formalised annual enrolment on the day after the end of the authorisation to temporarily interrupt or withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate receiving a negative reassessment after the deadline set by the academic committee of the doctoral programme to remedy the deficiencies that led to a previous negative assessment.
  • The doctoral candidate having been the subject of disciplinary proceedings leading to their suspension or permanent exclusion from the UPC.
  • A refusal to authorise the extensions applied for, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.3 of these regulations.
  • The doctoral candidate not having submitted the research plan in the period established in Section 8.2 of these regulations.
  • The maximum period of study for the doctoral degree having ended, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.4 of these regulations.

Dismissal from the programme means that the doctoral candidate cannot continue studying at the UPC and that their academic record will be closed. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission, and the committee must reevaluate the candidate in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.

A doctoral candidate who has been dismissed due to having exceeded the time limit for completing doctoral studies or due to an unsatisfactory assessment may not be Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Page 17 of 33 admitted to the same doctoral programme until at least two years have elapsed from the date of dismissal, as provided for in sections 3.4 and 9.2 of these regulations.

Training complements

Applicants who have completed a master's degree in environmental engineering, environmental sciences or a related field (engineering, chemistry, physics, etc.) do not need to take any bridging courses.
In the case of students admitted with other degrees, the academic committee will review each student's curriculum vitae and indicate the bridging courses that they must take from among subjects of the master’s degree in Environmental Engineering. Bridging courses may provide research or cross-disciplinary training, but in no case may doctoral students be required to enrol for 60 or more ECTS credits. In such cases, the committee will keep track of the bridging courses completed and establish appropriate criteria to limit their duration.
Taking into account the doctoral student activity report, the academic committee may propose measures that complement those specified in these regulations and which result in doctoral students who do not meet the specified requirements being excluded from the programme.
As indicated at the start of this section, when students are admitted, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may define requirements for additional methodological or scientific training on a case-by-case basis according to each student’s academic background and experience. The bridging courses students are required to take will be subjects of the master's degree linked to the programme: the UPC’s master’s degree in Environmental Engineering. Thesis supervisors who note gaps in a student’s training or believe they need additional advanced training in one or more subjects related to their doctoral thesis may require that the student concerned complete additional training specific to their needs. This additional training will involve students attending specialised courses, seminars and/or workshops, and/or completing stays at research centres to complete their training in specific areas related to their thesis topic.
Any bridging courses specified by the academic committee of the doctoral programme as a condition for admission must be completed within a year and a half (18 months). Students who have not successfully completed any bridging courses required within their first 18 months in the programme may be excluded by the academic committee.
In the case of additional training required by thesis supervisors or academic tutors, the time limit is 12 months from the time that students are informed of this requirement. Thesis supervisors or academic tutors may request that the academic committee exclude students who do not meet training requirements within this time period.

Procedure for the preparation and defense of the research plan

Doctoral candidates must submit a research plan, which will be included in their doctoral student activity report, before the end of the first year. The plan may be improved over the course of the doctoral degree. It must be endorsed by the tutor and the supervisor, and it must include the method that is to be followed and the aims of the research.

At least one of these annual assessments will include a public presentation and defence of the research plan and work done before a committee composed of three doctoral degree holders, which will be conducted in the manner determined by each academic committee. The examination committee awards a Pass or Fail mark. A Pass mark is a prerequisite for continuing on the doctoral programme. Doctoral candidates awarded a Fail mark must submit a new research plan for assessment by the academic committee of the doctoral programme within six months.

The committee assesses the research plan every year, in addition to all of the other activities in the doctoral student activity report. Doctoral candidates who are awarded two consecutive Fail marks for the research plan will be obliged to definitely withdraw from the programme.

If they change the subject of their thesis, they must submit a new research plan.

Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director

The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.

The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.

PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.

The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.

A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.

Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.

If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.

The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.

For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.

More information at the PhD theses section

Permanence

    Thesis abstract: Biobased and biodegradable, like polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), offer an alternative to petroleum-based plastics by reducing energy use and mitigating plastic waste. Among PHAs, polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is the most extensively studied, but its high production costs make it essential to explore novel production systems, like cyanobacteria. In addition, in the seek for exploring cost-effective strategies regarding PHB synthesis, the use of cyanobacteria rich microbiomes, or mixed cultures - a diverse microbial culture comprising various cyanobacterial strains and other microorganisms - is a strong option. However, research on cyanobacteria microbiomes for PHB production is relatively scarce.The present PhD thesis aims to contribute to this research gap by exploring the potential of cyanobacteria-enriched microbiomes, detailing the entire experimental process from field sample collection to the development of productive microbiomes in 3 liters (L) photobioreactors (PBRs). Additionally, it is also intended to provide fundamental insights to improve the production PHB process. To achieve the objective, seven samples were collected from different locations to obtain various microbiomes. A low concentration of phosphorus (0.2 mg·L⁻¹) was applied to promote the dominance of cyanobacteria. In an initial experiment to optimize PHB production, three factors were evaluated: organic carbon supplementation, inorganic carbon supplementation, and light cycles. The results showed that the addition of organic carbon, in the form of acetate, increased PHB production in all samples, reaching up to 14 % PHB in dry cell weight (dcw).In the attempt to develop a methodology to successfully obtain a productive photosynthetic microbiome, the operating mode in regards to nutrients, temperature, light, and carbon supplementation was evaluated in a 3 L PBR under non-sterile conditions. A two-stage approach was developed consisting in alternating seven days for biomass growth and seven days for PHB accumulation. During accumulation phase, acetate supplementation (600 mg·L⁻¹) combined with exposure to darkness resulted in different PHB yields across microbiomes. Of the seven microbiomes analysed, two stood out for their high PHB production, reaching peaks of 28 % and 37 %dcw, some of the highest levels reported in cyanobacteria. Three other microbiomes maintained sustained but lower production (12-15% dcw PHB), while the remaining two showed very low production (<5% dcw PHB) due to the presence of non-PHB-producing organisms, such as green algae. Analysis of 16S rRNA and gene expression revealed that the high PHB levels were associated with the overexpression of the phaC gene, responsible for PHB synthesis, and glgp1, involved in glycogen catabolism, indicating a relationship between the two metabolic pathways. Low PHB production was linked to the overexpression of the gltA gene, which diverts resources toward the Krebs cycle, away from PHB synthesis.Microscopy techniques successfully confirmed the presence of PHB granules within cyanobacteria cells. Further validation of the accumulated polymer as PHB was achieved through Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and proton nuclear magnetic resonance.Finally, simultaneous production of up to 205 mg·L⁻¹ exopolyssacharides (EPS) and 12 %dcw PHB was achieved in a 3 L PBR. Notably, the presence of uronic acid in the EPS promoted biomass flocculation. Overall, this thesis tries to demonstrate the feasibility of using cyanobacteria rich microbiomes for long-term PHB production in a non-sterile system. The research provides valuable insights into the metabolic pathways involved and the microbial community contributing to the process, offering a multidisciplinary approach for optimizing cultivation factors and bringing this promising technology closer to pilot scale-up, paving the way for more sustainable and cost-effective bioplastic manufacturing technology.

    Thesis abstract: The chemical sector is a $4 trillion global business and a major employer, with chemicals present in almost all manufactured products. Increasing investment and the chemical industry's innovative capacity to provide safe and sustainable products will be vital in offering new solutions and supporting the ecological transition of our economy and society. Multiple approaches and tools have been developed to assist chemists in the development, design, and application of chemical products. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach, applied to the design of chemicals and processes, has helped scientists examine environmental impacts from a life cycle perspective. It provides a global view of environmental burdens, covering a broad set of environmental indicators such as Global Warming, Primary Energy Consumption, Water Use, Land Use, or Resource Depletion.This thesis is related to the application of LCA to the industrialization of chemical and mechanochemical processes. The first article presents a literature review of LCA for chemical processes. The second article is another review on mechanochemical processes. Chemistry and mechanochemistry are leading sectors in the application of LCA, but their methodology is still scarce. The development of these articles aims to provide a guide for the advancement of these topics. Additionally, the thesis continues with the evaluation of innovative technologies for chemical processes: production of calcium zincate as an ingredient for rechargeable batteries, cellulose extraction from wood chips, or nicotine extraction from tobacco leaves, for instance.It has been concluded that the choice of raw material is often the main source of environmental impact in a chemical process. Furthermore, mass and energy balances, as well as the type of energy supplied to power the process, are of great importance as part of the life cycle inventory. When selecting the functional unit (FU) for industrial chemical processes, where a given amount of product must be supplied within a given time frame, special attention must be paid. Although it falls outside the scope of cradle-to-gate LCA practice, variables such as reaction residence time can result in the final product having more service units or more functions. Therefore, this should be considered valuable additional information when deciding between alternatives. The LCA result with an FU that depends solely on mass does not account for this. Several chemical LCA studies already conduct assessments using flow rate as an FU. Another example is the consideration of module D within EN 15804:2012+A2:2019 for the inclusion of information outside the cradle-to-gate scope in LCAs of construction products.Moreover, the scalability of material flows from the laboratory scale, where data is obtained, to the pilot or industrial scale, where the process will be applied, is of crucial importance. For this purpose, different frameworks based on thermodynamic equations, as well as process modeling and simulation tools, have been used throughout the thesis. For instance, it has been observed that energy optimization from the lab to the industrial scale is around 20% on average, reaching maximum values of 90% for some equipment, such as the reactor used in Deasyl's laboratories. Finally, in LCA comparisons, an environmental impact evolution study is conducted, taking into account forecasts for electricity mixes in the coming years according to reports from the European Green Deal to interpret how the results will behave in the future.

    Thesis abstract: The adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) requires careful management of their resource-intensive batteries to make sure that the transition does not come at a high environmental cost. Technological advancements and cost reductions have led to increased battery capacities and substantial expected residual value in retired batteries, highlighting the importance of circular economy practices, such as sharing and repurposing.Effective decision-making in the battery lifecycle requires precise estimation of End of Life (EoL). Current methods use a universal criterion of 70-80% State of Health (SoH) for defining the EoL, but this overlooks the individualities of each driver and their EV battery capacity.The initial part of the thesis assesses the adequacy of the universal EoL criteria. It begins by analysing the driving performance of EVs to identify new criteria for determining the functional EoL based on specific driving needs. Subsequently, the functional EoL thresholds for various realistic use cases are obtained using driving profiles derived from a proposed synthetic driving cycle model. The findings indicate that underperformance is influenced by factors such as battery capacity, charging frequency, and driving times, highlighting the shortcomings of current EoL estimates.Recognizing the limitations of the fixed EoL criteria, the second part of the thesis introduces a novel approach for EoL estimation using the State of Function (SoF). This approach considers historical driving requirements to define individualize EoL thresholds and employs a data-driven algorithm to predict the SoH under real-world operating conditions (i.e. partial charges). Both aspects, EoL requirements and battery degradation, are included in the proposed definition of the SoF, measuring how far the battery is from underperforming.The thesis results advocate shifting from the 70-80% SoH EoL criterion to the SoF measure to improve EoL estimations. In addition, understanding the functional EoL allows exploration of alternatives like Vehicle to Grid (V2G) and second-life applications to maximize battery usage, reduce residual value when reaching the recycling stage, and minimize environmental impact.

    Thesis abstract: Freshwater is an extremely scarce yet essential resource for all life forms on planet Earth. Its quality directly impacts the development of human societies as well as the ecosystems balance and health. However, the main causes of freshwater and, consequently, environmental pollution are related to human activities such as agriculture, land use changes or poor water treatment. Therefore, proper treatment of wastewater before disposal is crucial for preserving the quality of the receiving natural environment. Furthermore, the importance of the metabolic activity of microorganisms in both the natural environment and wastewater treatment systems shall be highlighted as they govern the biogeochemical cycles. Indeed, microbial activity is considered as good environmental quality indicator.Given the actual water emergency situation, techniques allowing for fast and efficient monitoring and control of parameters/indicators related to water quality and microbial activity in ecosystems are required. The use of sensors and biosensors might be a good strategy to achieve this goal. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) are devices capable of generating a small electric current driven by the metabolic activity of electroactive microorganisms. BES, among many other uses, have also been applied as biosensors, for assessing organic substrates and toxic compounds.Therefore, the main objective of this Thesis is to assess the feasibility of using bioelectrochemical systems (BES) for efficient water resources monitoring and control. More specifically, to determine the potential of various types of BES for estimating parameters related to both water quality and the activity of microbial populations inhabiting a given ecosystem. Constructed wetlands (or treatment wetlands, TW) are natural wastewater treatment systems that have been used as a context environment throughout the present Thesis.The results obtained in the first part of the Thesis demonstrate that the implementation of BES in treatment wetlands increases the enzymatic and aerobic activity of the microbial communities, which in turn is related to a better treatment efficiency of these systems compared to conventional ones, i.e., without BES. Subsequently, in the second part, the applicability of different bioelectrochemical systems as biosensors for microbial activity and water quality was evaluated. Regarding the use of MFCs and M3Cs as biosensors, the experiments indicate that both systems can be used to estimate microbial activity and organic matter concentration. Specifically, the parameters that can be estimated with better precision are ATP content and organic matter concentration (measured as chemical oxygen demand, COD), although good results have also been achieved for biomass (measured as volatile solids, VS) and enzymatic activity biosensing. In addition, M3Cs offer better stability, precision, and sensor lifespan compared to MFC ones. Furthermore, the use of current peaks generated during the discontinuous operation of the BES offers better results in terms of sensitivity and precision compared to continuous signal, although information processing is more tedious. Demonstrating that the discontinuous operation of BES is also useful as a biosensing tool allows for widening their applicability to environments in which water saturation conditions are met intermittently. Finally, from the study conducted in a full-scale treatment plant where several MFCs were implemented and used as biosensors, it is found that the BES scaling up is traduced in a decrease of sensor’s precision. However, it allows to determine not only microbial activity and organic matter concentration but also the clogging state of the treatment bed and its hydraulic conductivity.In conclusion, although still in its investigation infancy, bioelectrochemical systems-based biosensors can be used as a holistic monitoring system, at least in water treatment systems, for improving water management and control.

    Thesis abstract: Desert dust, primarily composed of mineral particles from arid and semiarid regions, irnpacts the Earth's atmosphere, climate, ecosystems and human health. To better eva!uate these impacts, desert dust models must reduce uncertaintles, which partly stem from inadequate characterization of sediment properties. In this study, samples were co!lected from four regions (Morocco, lceland, Mojave Desert and Jordan), including crusts (ephemeral lake top sediments), paved sediments (eroded crusts by aeolian processes), sediments and aeolian ripples (transported by wind). These were analysed far particle size, aggregatlon state, mlnera!ogy and Fe modes of occurrence. The results yielded four conceptual models far the formation of dust-emitting sediments, highlighting their physicochemical properties. These models can guide future studies in obtaining relevant information from other dese1t dust hotspots for improved dust model!ing. Prior to sampling, it is crucial to characterize the region using various approaches, including geological background, sedimentology, and remete sensing, to accurately identify dust-emitting sources. Lowlands, being the rnost emissive areas, should be prioritized, with samples taken frorn the top few centimetres of soil. The particle aggregation state can be assessed by comparing the fu!ly and minimally dispersed particle size distributions, which is critica! for desert dust emission models. Crusts, the most common sedirnents in lowlands, are typically enriched in finer minerals, precipitated minerals, and total Fe content. This detailed characterization ensures that sampling accurately represents the dust-emitting areas. The first conceptual model !acuses on mid-latitude dust hotspots (MLDH), where ephemeral lakes and floodplains serve as the primary dust sources. These areas exhibit significant dust-emitting fluxes primarily driven by aeo!ian ripples and sa!tation, breaking the crusts in lowlands, which are characterized by a high particle aggregation state, finer particle size, and elevated clay and exchangeable Fe contents comparad to highlands. A variation of this rnodel, also for MLDHs, lncludes lowland crusts with high precipitation of carbonate and salt minerals, as seen in the White Desert of Jordan. The state of aggregation in these areas depends on whether precipitation processes accumulate as cement oras single minera! particles, with total Fe content diluted by mineral precipitation. Another variant pertains to aeolian sediments deposited in lowlands from desert dust storms, such as in the Black Desert. Here, crusts form from aeolian deposition and scarce rain accumulation in small depressions within the basalt field. Mineralogical evidence indicates that these sediments originate from aeolian transport from neighbouring dust hotspots rather than local weathering substrata (basalt fields), resulting in a low to mid particle aggregation state. Dust emission in these regions is limlted due to the rugged terrain of the basalt fields and the absence of aeolian ripples. The final conceptual model pertains to a high-latitude dust hotspot (HLDH), exemplified by lceland. This model is characterized by a unique combination of volcanic geology and a glacial environment. Glacial meltwaters release large volumes of paleo-volcanic ash, stored in the glacier's ice for millennia, into the river systems. A recent volcanic eruption formed a basaltic field, acting as a natural dam and creating an epherneral lake where fine ash and sediments are deposited. The mineralogy is predorninantly volcanic glass, with a significantly higher total Fe contentlfl<ee times that of MLDHsaed high abundance of magnetite. The absence of carbonates, salts, and clays contributes to the low aggregation state of these particles. These sediments, with their fine partic!e size and low particle aggregation state, are highly prone to dust emissions by saltation and potentia!ly aerodynamic entraínment.

    Thesis abstract: The leather industry faces global challenges related to its sustainability credentials due the significant waste generated throughout the leather production processes. In the context of contemporary environmental policy, which is increasingly focused on sustainable production and consumption, the need to understand and mitigate environmental impacts associated with leather has become a strategic and economic imperative. In this respect, a comprehensive "gate-to-gate" life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted following the newly released Leather Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR). The analysis aimed to evaluate the environmental impacts of leather production, with a specific focus on New Zealand's leather production industry, mainly due to its agriculturally oriented economy and large size of livestock sector.This thesis builds upon this foundation by addressing the issue of solid waste in the leather industry. Therefore, a waste valorization strategy was investigated to convert unavoidable waste into valuable resources through the production of new, value added composites, which involves incorporating leather waste (BF) into virgin and recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The focus of this thesis is to analyze environmental impact of these novel composites, to improve the implementation of circular economy principles, within the context of their use in automotive bumper production. The environmental impact of these novel composites was compared to conventional polypropylene (PP), bumpers, by performing a cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA). The thesis also aims to provide a contribution to LCA methodology applied to composite materials, by adopting various functional units, such as mass, volume, and the volume of raw material fulfilling a specific impact strength requirement.The in-depth analysis of mechanical and thermal properties of the BF/HDPE composites highlights the composite’s potential for industrial applications that require high mechanical strength and low thermal conductivity. The incorporation of leather waste not only enhances material properties, but also contributes to environmental sustainability by converting unavoidable waste into a value added product. The environmental assessment, adopting a cradle-to-gate LCA with various functional units, indicates that composites made from recycled HDPE and leather waste have a lower environmental impact than those from virgin materials. The only exception is when the material's impact strength is a key factor in the functional unit, due to the higher impact strength of HDPE-BF composites. In all cases, increasing the content of recycled materials in the bumpers increases its environmental performance, supporting the advancement of circular economy principles in the automotive sector.The research highlights the significance of choosing an appropriate functional unit, based on specific applications such as automotive bumpers, in comparing the environmental footprint of innovative composite materials with that of traditional materials. Broadening the scope of evaluation to include various functions yields a more realistic scenario, but it leads to higher uncertainties in the results as well.

    Thesis abstract: Organic aerosols (OA) are a significant component of particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere, accounting for 20-90% of total PM in Europe. OA plays a fundamental role in air quality, human health, and climate change. This Ph.D. thesis aimed to advance the understanding of OA characterization and optical properties, particularly focused on light-absorbing OA, termed brown carbon (BrC). This research used detailed observations from experimental campaigns and modeling techniques. Observational data were provided by the EGAR-IDAEA group, and the modeling part was developed at the BSC-AC group. The Multiscale Online Nonhydrostatic AtmospheRe CHemistry (MONARCH) model was further developed and used for all studies in this thesis.In the first study, we analyzed the chemical composition of coarse and fine PM simulated by the MONARCH model across three different environments in northeastern Spain (Barcelona urban, Montseny regional and Montsec remote sites). The urban site was characterized by mixed biogenic and anthropogenic sources, the regional site was primarily dominated by biogenic, and the remote site showed low concentrations except during long-range transport dust episodes. Sea salt aerosols played a fundamental role in the urban environment, while mineral dust had the largest impact during spring. In the second study, analysis of carbonaceous aerosols (black carbon, BC, and OA) using three emission inventories in the MONARCH model highlighted the importance of model resolution and detailed emission estimates. Traffic was the main contributor to BC on the urban site, with significant contributions from residential wood combustion (RWC) and shipping. Discrepancies were found in spatiotemporal disaggregation and the treatment of condensables in RWC emissions, highlighting uncertainties in OA due to emission characterization and limited secondary aerosol production in the model.The third study examined the variability of OA refractive imaginary index (k) from five sources using data from 12 European monitoring stations. The model performed well in simulating OA mass concentrations, identifying residential emissions as a major source during the colder months and secondary OA (SOA) during warmer periods, with a significant contribution of shipping emissions near ports. Optimizing k values at 370 nm revealed significant variability influenced by emission sources and environmental conditions.In the fourth study, we implemented a BrC parameterization in MONARCH, including a photobleaching effect. The BrC absorption of an annual simulation was evaluated with the European observations used in the third study. Results showed underestimations of the model BrC absorption, likely due to uncertainty in the BrC emission estimates. Through sensitivity runs perturbing BrC sources the model bias improved significantly. BrC contributes to light absorption, especially during winter as a result of increased biomass burning and biofuel emissions, highlighting important implications for climate modeling.The work carried out in this Ph.D. advances the understanding of OA and BrC and highlights the need for better representation of OA emission, formation processes, and optical properties in atmospheric models. These results will aid modelers in quantifying radiative effects of OA and their climate implications.

    Thesis abstract: Indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort are critical in educational buildings, as poor conditions have been linked to reduced cognitive performance, higher absenteeism and long-term health effects. The COVID-19 pandemic further underscored these issues, especially in naturally ventilated environments, which comprise 93% of schools in tropical or subtropical locations. Initially, schools and universities transitioned to remote learning to curb the spread of the virus. When in-person learning resumed, enhanced ventilation protocols and awareness campaigns emphasized the importance of occupants' role in maintaining IAQ in naturally ventilated environments. However, several critical questions emerged: Were short-term awareness campaigns effective in fostering long-lasting changes in ventilation behaviour? Could natural ventilation alone consistently meet air quality standards without compromising thermal comfort? As the pandemic subsided, these challenges highlighted the need for resilient solutions that could not only mitigate immediate health risks but also promote healthier, more adaptable indoor environments in the face of future public health challenges.This thesis addresses these issues through a comprehensive investigation of ventilation strategies, thermal comfort, and IAQ in naturally ventilated educational buildings during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The study involved extensive measurement campaigns in classrooms at various academic recording variables such as CO₂ concentrations, air and mean radiant temperatures, relative humidity and air velocity. These campaigns aimed to assess both the effectiveness of natural ventilation and the sustainability of behaviour changes prompted by short-term awareness initiatives. In a first stage, a sensitivity analysis evaluates the impact of assuming certain variables when estimating thermal comfort using PMV and adaptive models from ASHRAE 55, ISO 7736, EN 16798 standards. The findings suggest that simplified thermal comfort models can provide reliable estimates when benchmarked against estimations that incorporate globe sensor measurements of mean radiant temperature (accuracy ±2 °C). This reduces the need for continuous monitoring of variables like mean radiant temperature and air velocity, streamlining thermal comfort assessments in educational settings.Regarding IAQ during and after COVID-19, the study found that natural ventilation alone often failed to meet recommended CO₂ thresholds, primarily due to the trade-off between maintaining thermal comfort and achieving adequate air exchange. Although intensive awareness campaigns led to short-term behavioural changes, the initial improvements in IAQ were short-lived, with CO₂ concentrations rising again as awareness waned. Alternative strategies, such as reduced classroom occupancy or online learning, posed logistical challenges and risked exacerbating educational inequalities. These findings emphasize the need for mechanical ventilation as the most reliable method for improving IAQ and controlling infection spread. However, mechanical systems are energy-intensive, necessitating more efficient alternatives. To address this issue, this thesis focuses on demand-controlled ventilation systems due to their potential for reducing energy demand. Specifically, it examines the characteristics that monitored data must meet for effective calibration of the models used in the control. For this purpose, grey-box models developed from 47 measurements data are used. The results show that the models are most accurate when changes in occupancy and ventilation range between 15 and 20%, and when the coefficient of variation of CO₂ is at least 0.3. These conditions enable dynamic control of ventilation systems, optimizing performance while adapting to fluctuating conditions. Additionally, the potential integration of CO₂ from classroom air into greenhouse crops was explored, revealing promising synergies.

Quality

The Validation, Monitoring, Modification and Accreditation Framework (VSMA Framework) for official degrees ties the quality assurance processes (validation, monitoring, modification and accreditation) carried out over the lifetime of a course to two objectives—the goal of establishing coherent links between these processes, and that of achieving greater efficiency in their management—all with the overarching aim of improving programmes.
