The UPC’s Department of Materials Science, the unit responsible for organising and promoting doctoral degree courses in Materials Science and Metallurgy, was created by bringing together the Chairs in Metallurgy and Iron and Steel Technology of the Barcelona School of Industrial Engineering (ETSEIB) and professors from the materials science and metallurgical engineering knowledge area of the Terrassa School of Industrial Engineering and the technical schools of Vilanova i la Geltrú, Manresa and Terrassa. Professors from the textile area have now joined the Department, and the Manresa section is no longer associated with it.

Before the enactment of the University Reform Law (which led to the formation of the Department), the ETSEIB Chairs in Metallurgy and Iron and Steel Technology were already teaching doctoral courses, and several doctoral theses were supervised and defended in this context. At that time, this kind of academic activity was relatively uncommon in higher technical schools.

The formation of the Department and the recruitment of new professors, who brought extensive experience in other areas of materials science (polymers, ceramics and composites), paved the way for the creation and consolidation of a doctoral programme that has now been running for over 30 years. Over this time, the programme has gradually evolved. Its structure and content have been adapted based on the experience gained and lessons learned through programme delivery, the research areas that have taken shape and become firmly established in the Department, and successive changes in the regulatory framework.

The programme offered 15 doctoral courses within the framework of Royal Decree 778/1998. To adapt to Royal Decree 56/2005, almost all of these courses were included in the master's programme in Materials Science and Engineering, which later evolved into the new master's degree in Materials Science and Advanced Materials Engineering (validated in 2019). This master’s degree currently includes 22 subjects (compulsory and optional, distributed over two years of study), and graduates are eligible for direct admission to the doctoral programme. Alternatively, these subjects may be taken as bridging courses by students who need additional training in view of their entrance qualification.

The doctoral programme was recognised with a quality award given by the Spanish Ministry of Education in 2003 (MCD2003-00150), the year the programme was launched, and the award was renewed in the following years (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009). The programme was later granted a Pathway to Excellence award (MEE2011-0471), which remained in effect until 2013. The Pathway to Excellence programme ended in 2013, and a new system for assessing the quality of doctoral programmes has not yet been introduced. In Catalonia, to the best of our knowledge, this doctoral programme is the only one focusing on structural materials that has been granted a Pathway to Excellence award. (The only other programme to receive this recognition focuses on functional materials).

It is also a source of pride for us that our doctoral programme was selected to participate in the Erasmus Mundus Joint European Doctoral Programme in Materials Science and Engineering. This programme, which was validated almost as a matter of course, emerged directly from the UPC’s doctoral programme in Materials Science and Engineering, with the exception of the requirement to take a number of bridging course credits (up to 30) and complete a period of study at one of the other participating universities: Luleå University of Technology (Sweden), Linköping University (Sweden), the University of Lorraine (France) and Saarland University (Saarbrücken, Germany). The Erasmus Mundus doctoral programme is a continuation of the Erasmus Mundus master's degree in Advanced Materials Science and Engineering (AMASE), which is delivered by the same universities and has been renewed three times by the European Commission.

General information

Access profile

Given the multidisciplinary nature of the scientific field of the programme, there are a wide range of degrees that qualify applicants for admission. The applicants considered most suitable for admission to the doctoral programme in Materials Science and Engineering are bachelor’s degree holders with a scientific and technological background who have completed a master's degree in Materials Science and Advanced Materials Engineering or a related field.

In addition to having suitable academic qualifications, it is considered important that applicants have certain personal characteristics – namely, an interest in the research projects carried out within the framework of the programme; critical and analytical skills; initiative, perseverance and persistence in their academic work; the ability to work in a team; and the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

The main entrance qualifications for the programme are as follows:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or higher engineering degree (Industrial, Materials or Chemical Engineering) or a pre-EHEA degree in Physical and/or Chemical Sciences with a master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering (or proof of having completed 60 ECTS credits of this master’s degree), or another master’s degree with the same content, from any higher education institution in the EHEA, or a non-EHEA country if the applicant is eligible for admission to doctoral studies in that country.

Students with the following qualifications are eligible for direct admission:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Industrial, Materials, Chemical or similar) or a pre-EHEA degree in Physics and/or Chemistry with a master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering.

With bridging courses:

Holders of a bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Industrial, Materials, Chemical or similar) or a pre-EHEA degree in Physics and/or Chemistry who have completed a master's degree in a field other than Materials Science and Engineering. If admitted, these students will be required to take bridging courses carrying up to 60 ECTS credits (subjects of the master’s degree that they have not taken).

Output profile

Doctoral candidates who complete a doctoral degree will have acquired the following competencies, which are needed to carry out quality research (Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January, which regulates official doctoral studies):

a) A systematic understanding of the field of study and a mastery of the research skills and methods related to the field.

Duration of studies and dedication regime

Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, counted from the date of first enrolment in the relevant programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is seven years from the date of first enrolment in the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. To calculate these periods, the date of deposit is considered to be the date on which the thesis is made publicly available for review.

If a doctoral candidate has a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%, the maximum period of study is six years for full-time students and nine years for part-time students.

For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years.

When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the requirement to complete this minimum period of study.

Temporary disability leave and leave for the birth of a child, adoption or fostering for the purposes of adoption, temporary foster care, risk during pregnancy or infant feeding, gender violence and any other situation provided for in current regulations do not count towards these periods. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which must inform the Doctoral School.

Doctoral candidates may request periods of temporary withdrawal from the programme for up to a total of two years. Requests must be justified and addressed to the academic committee responsible for the programme, which will decide whether or not to grant the candidate's request.

Extension of studies
If a doctoral candidate has not applied to deposit their thesis before the expiry of the deadlines specified in the previous section, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may, at the request of the doctoral candidate, authorise an extension of this deadline of one year under the conditions specified for the doctoral programme in question.

Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:

  • The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate not having completed their annual enrolment or applied for a temporary interruption.
  • The doctoral candidate not having formalised annual enrolment on the day after the end of the authorisation to temporarily interrupt or withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate receiving a negative reassessment after the deadline set by the academic committee of the doctoral programme to remedy the deficiencies that led to a previous negative assessment.
  • The doctoral candidate having been the subject of disciplinary proceedings leading to their suspension or permanent exclusion from the UPC.
  • A refusal to authorise the extensions applied for, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.3 of these regulations.
  • The doctoral candidate not having submitted the research plan in the period established in Section 8.2 of these regulations.
  • The maximum period of study for the doctoral degree having ended, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.4 of these regulations.

Dismissal from the programme means that the doctoral candidate cannot continue studying at the UPC and that their academic record will be closed. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission, and the committee must reevaluate the candidate in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.

A doctoral candidate who has been dismissed due to having exceeded the time limit for completing doctoral studies or due to an unsatisfactory assessment may not be Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Page 17 of 33 admitted to the same doctoral programme until at least two years have elapsed from the date of dismissal, as provided for in sections 3.4 and 9.2 of these regulations.

Legal framework

Admission criteria and merits assessment

Weighting of admission criteria:

1. Applicant’s curriculum vitae: Type of training and marks awarded, as well as research and professional experience (70%)

2. Personal contact through online or face-to-face interviews (15%).

3. English language skills (15%)

Admissions body

The programme has an academic committee that assesses student applications. Each month, the committee reviews applications submitted through the pre-enrolment application. The doctoral programme has a specific form for doctoral students to indicate their scientific and technical interests. Based on this information, and taking into account the needs and capacity of research groups, the academic committee channels the applications accepted so that tutors and thesis supervisors can be assigned.
If the academic committee deems that additional training is required for an applicant to be admitted, it determines what bridging courses the student will be required to take to ensure that they have the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities (up to a maximum of 60 ECTS credits).

Training complements

The academic committee for the doctoral programme may require that students pass specific bridging courses. Additional training requirements will be determined based on each student's academic background. In such cases, the committee will keep track of the bridging courses completed and establish appropriate criteria to limit their duration.

Bridging courses may provide research or cross-disciplinary training, but in no case may doctoral students be required to enrol for 60 or more ECTS credits.

Any bridging courses that students are required to take will be subjects offered on the master's degree in Materials Science and Advanced Materials Engineering (validated in 2019). The specific bridging courses required will depend on each student’s entrance qualification. If admitted, holders of a bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Industrial, Materials, Chemical or similar), or a pre-EHEA degree in Physics and/or Chemistry, and a master's degree in a field other than Materials Science and Engineering will be required to take bridging courses carrying up to 60 ECTS credits (subjects of the master's degree in Materials Science and Advanced Materials Engineering).

Bridging courses are selected from among subjects taught on the master's degree in Materials Science and Advanced Materials Engineering based on each applicant's background and the gaps in their training. Applicants are informed of the bridging courses they will be required to take prior to the enrolment process. At the same time, they are also provided with information on the frequency with which courses are offered and the pertinence of their content.

The following points apply to any bridging courses that doctoral students may be required to take:

1. Bridging courses are subjects of the specified master's degree and must be administratively linked to the student’s enrolment in the doctoral degree. They may be taken in one or two semesters, depending on each student’s previous training and the frequency with which they are offered.

2. Students who do not successfully complete required bridging courses will be automatically excluded from the programme.

Procedure for the preparation and defense of the research plan

Doctoral candidates must submit a research plan, which will be included in their doctoral student activity report, before the end of the first year. The plan may be improved over the course of the doctoral degree. It must be endorsed by the tutor and the supervisor, and it must include the method that is to be followed and the aims of the research.

At least one of these annual assessments will include a public presentation and defence of the research plan and work done before a committee composed of three doctoral degree holders, which will be conducted in the manner determined by each academic committee. The examination committee awards a Pass or Fail mark. A Pass mark is a prerequisite for continuing on the doctoral programme. Doctoral candidates awarded a Fail mark must submit a new research plan for assessment by the academic committee of the doctoral programme within six months.

The committee assesses the research plan every year, in addition to all of the other activities in the doctoral student activity report. Doctoral candidates who are awarded two consecutive Fail marks for the research plan will be obliged to definitely withdraw from the programme.

If they change the subject of their thesis, they must submit a new research plan.

Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director

The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.

The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.

PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.

The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.

A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.

Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.

If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.

The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.

For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.

More information at the PhD theses section

Permanence

Thesis abstract: Replacing petroleum-based polymers with natural alternatives requires overcoming the limitations of their thermal and mechanical properties, as well as the inherently low fire resistance of the biomass from which they are derived. A common method for improving thermal insulation is through the use of porous systems such as technical foams. Aerogels, as highly porous materials, are lightweight and have low thermal conductivity, making them effective barriers for this purpose. However, the challenge remains in finding a solution where all the aforementioned properties are fully optimized. This thesis aims to demonstrate that by using environmentally friendly materials and processes, it is possible to create multifunctional aerogels with optimized properties, positioning them as viable alternatives, among others, to conventional foams.Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a biodegradable synthetic polymer, was initially studied with the introduction of alginate and tannic acid (TA) as natural modifiers and clay playing the role of structural scaffold. The hydrogen bonding between the polar groups of the components resulted in a nearly tenfold improvement in the mechanical properties as compared to pure PVA aerogels. The addition of NaOH was necessary to overcome the high hydrogen bonding attraction between TA and PVA that causes a fast precipitation of a solid which hindered gel formation. The PVA aerogel matrix was further cross-linked using calcium and borate ions, leading to an additional enhancement in mechanical performance, along with increased thermal stability and fire resistance, with the peak of heat release decreasing five-fold with respect to PVA.Gelatin—an abundant and cost-effective protein—was utilized as a novel system for developing optimized aerogel composites. Tannic acid played a crucial role in establishing strong bonds with the active sites of gelatin, a process that was carried out under alkaline conditions to stabilize the hydrogel complex. This approach resulted in exceptionally strong aerogels, achieving up to a 15-fold increase in yield stress. The protective action of well-dispersed nanoclay particles enhanced the pyrolytic decomposition and charring effects of tannic acid, imparting excellent flame-retardant properties to the aerogels. Although gelatins’ highly hydrophilic nature posed an initial challenge, a simple dip-coating treatment with polydimethylsiloxane and SiO2 nanoparticles effectively conferred superhydrophobic surfaces. Finally, the performance of modified ammonium alginate/clay/tannic acid composites was studied based on the orientation induced during the freeze-drying process. Alginate, a naturally abundant polysaccharide, was chosen as the base polymer for the aerogels due to its high fire resistance and the release of nitrogen upon heating, which reduces the amount of combustible gases. Orientation and crosslinking were key steps in enhancing the mechanical properties, achieving values as high as 305 MPa for Young’s modulus and 7 MPa cm³/g for yield strength, placing these systems among the highest reported in the literature. Thermal conductivity fit well with existing model predictions, increasing in axially oriented samples due to heat convection contribution through large vertical pores. Thermal stability and fire resistance were significantly improved by the addition of tannic acid, resulting in a minimal peak heat release of just 21 kW/m² and no detectable flame.New types of eco-friendly composite aerogels with an ultralight, porous structure have been developed. They were successfully fabricated using freeze-drying and post-cross-linking techniques, achieving an excellent balance of mechanical strength, thermal stability, and fire retardancy. In summary, this work demonstrates that bio-based and biodegradable aerogels can serve as a viable approach when seeking greener alternatives with properties comparable to current traditional foam-like materials.

Thesis abstract: Laser Surface Texturing (LST) has emerged as a versatile and effective technique for modifying the surface properties of metallic materials, offering precise control over surface topography and microstructure. This PhD thesis presents a comprehensive investigation into the effects of LST on metastable austenitic stainless steel AISI 301LN, focusing on microstructural evolution, surface integrity, and corrosion resistance behavior. The study begins with a thorough characterization of the AISI 301LN, including an in-deep analysis of its chemical composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties, at different length scales. The material's inherent properties serve as a baseline for evaluating the effects of LST. Experimental analysis by doing a Design of Experiments (DoE) of the key-parameters for the LST process is conducted, trying to get a deep knowledge of the laser power, scanning speed, and focal distance position effects on austenitic stainless steels. A series of experiments are designed and executed to systematically vary these parameters, allowing for a detailed examination of their impact on surface morphology, grain structure, and phase composition.Microstructural evolution resulting from LST is investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). SEM micrographs reveal significant changes in surface topography, including the formation of grooves, ridges, and other microscale features induced by the laser beam. EDS analysis provides insights into changes in phase composition and/or transformation, such as the formation of α’-martensite near the surface due to rapid heating and cooling cycles induced during the laser processing. Mechanical properties of LST samples are evaluated at the micro- and macrometric length scale by using the Vickers hardness technique, leading to get a correlation between processing laser parameters and the material hardness. Surface hardness is found to increase with higher laser power and lower scanning speeds, attributed to changes in microstructure induced by thermal energy input.Statistical analysis is used to quantify the depth of the microstructural evolution zone, revealing the influence of laser power, scanning speed, and focal distance position on the depth profile. These findings provide valuable insights into the optimal processing conditions for achieving desired surface properties. Corrosion resistance of LST is assessed through immersion testing in molten carbonate salt environments, simulating harsh operating conditions encountered in industrial applications. Post-test analysis using SEM-EDS allows for the examination of oxide scale formation and corrosion mechanisms, with results indicating improved corrosion resistance for samples subjected to specific LST conditions. In general, this PhD thesis contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex interactions between the key LST parameters and the surface integrity from a different perspective of metastable austenitic stainless steel AISI 301LN. The comprehensive experimental approach, combined with advanced analytical techniques, enhances our knowledge of microstructural evolution, mechanical behavior, and corrosion resistance in metallic materials treated with the LST technique. These insights have significant implications for the development of advanced surface engineering techniques and the optimization of material performance in various engineering applications in the automotive, aeronautic, and medical, among other fields.

Thesis abstract: Shear spinning is an incremental sheet metal forming process where a flat metal blank or pre-form is usually converted into an axisymmetric hollow part. Several ductile metals and alloys can be shear formed either at cold and hot conditions, and the most common include steel, aluminum, copper, and nickel alloys. The shape of the shear-formed parts may be conical, concave, convex, or a combination, with wide-ranging applications across industries like aerospace, automotive, and more. The main focus of this research was the study of the forming limit at room temperature in the shear spinning process through experimental trials and finite element simulations. Traditionally, a successful part produced by shear forming is highly dependent on the operator's experience, and usually, the right conditions are found after several trials. The forming limit of any metal forming process is essential data that helps to predict defects appearance in advance, guaranteeing product quality. Accordingly, processing maps to failure were derived for a mild steel DC04, stainless steel AISI 420, precipitation hardening aluminum alloys AA2024 and AA7075, in which the failure limits were found as a function of the thickness reduction, roller attack angle, spindle speed, and feed rate. The experimental findings revealed a convincing relationship between the maximum allowable thickness reduction and the feed rate ratio with the roller nose radius. As the feed rate increased, the maximum allowable thickness reduction exhibited an exponential decrease, described by a parametric equation. Also, it was found that the maximum allowable thickness reduction was 84% for the DC04 and 80% for the rest of the materials.Furthermore, numerical simulations based on the finite element method have been demonstrated as an efficient tool to accurately predict the mechanical response and appearance of defects in metal forming operations. The prediction capabilities of the numerical simulation are based on the evolution of field variables through the operation, i.e., displacements, strain, strain rate, stresses, and ductile damage. Different models of shear spinning were built with the ABAQUS commercial software. First, the efficiency of the different kinematic strategies and solving methods used to model the shear spinning were compared. An efficient segment model was proposed that reduces the computing time up to 300 times compared to conventional models.Further, different uncoupled ductile damage models were implemented via the user materials subroutine (VUMAT). It was found that the ductile damage models can accurately predict failure conditions using a non-linear damage evolution formulation. This research enhances the understanding of material deformation in the shear spinning process and provides a framework for improving operational efficiency in incremental forming processes.

Thesis abstract: Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) is one of the most widely used and versatile thermoplastic due to its toughness, chemical resistance and processability. These characteristics make it suitable for various applications as in electronic and automotive fields. However, its inherent flammability could limit its use. To counteract it, the incorporation of phosphorus-based flame retardants (PFRs) in ABS, as a more environmentally friendly alternative to the halogenated ones, has been used in the past years. However, the use of PFRs has an adverse impact on ABS mechanical properties, limiting its use where both fire safety and mechanical performance are required. In order to solve this problem, new strategies to enhance mechanical behavior of PFR-ABS composites were proposed in the present thesis. Also, due to the current challenge of promoting more ecological solutions, new research regarding the use of bio-wastes of forestry industry, as potential bio-based flame retardants in ABS was also made. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the improvement of mechanical properties of an ABS composite, containing ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and aluminum diethyl phosphinate (AlPi), by combining an ultrahigh molecular weight silicone rubber (UHMW-SR) and ethylene methyl acrylate copolymers (EMA) with different wt.% of methyl acrylate (MA). Their effect on the microstructure, mechanical and fire behavior of the ABS composite was discussed. Improvement in interfacial interaction between the flame retardant particles and ABS matrix, as well as, in the molecular mobility in the presence of EMA and/or UHMW-SR was noticed. As a result, remarkable synergies were observed in impact strength. Particularly, a 212% increase was achieved when added 5 wt.% of EMA, with 29 wt.% of MA, and 2 wt.% of UHMW-SR in flame retarded ABS, maintaining its self-extinguished behavior. To address the development of more friendly flame retardant systems for ABS, cork powder (C), a bio-waste of cork industry with no economic value, was proposed to be used as a potential bio-flame retardant (bio-FR). First, to better understand the flammability behavior of C, the effect of cork components on its pyrolysis decomposition was analyzed. It was observed that suberin plays a major role in enhancing the thermal stability of cork; however, it did not show a significant charring ability, contrarily to cork lignocellulosic part. Furthermore, the effect of combining APP with C on ABS microstructure, thermal stability and fire performance was discussed. By only replacing 3 wt.% of APP by cork, an optimum improvement in fire retardancy was achieved with the highest efficiency in reducing the heat release rate (HRR). It was also revealed that replacing 20 wt.% of APP by cork led to a similar fire performance to the ABS with 30 wt.% APP.Moreover, to increase C efficiency as bio-FR, phosphorus moieties were grafted to its surface by chemical modification. Phosphorylation of C with glyphosate (Cg), triethyl phosphate (Ct) and dimethyl-3-triethoxysilanepropylphosphoramidate (Cd) resulted in a registered phosphorus content of 0.9, 0.3 and 2.4 wt.%, respectively. Compared to natural C, phosphorylated cork contributed to an enhancement of flame retardancy in ABS composites. The highest improvement was observed for ABS with 30 wt.% Cd, by showing a higher combustible gasses dilution effect on the gas phase and a more cohesive char layer formation on the condensed phase that led to the reduction of heat and mass transfer phenomena.

Thesis abstract: Polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PcBN) is a composite competitive cutting tool material that excels performance when machining difficult-to-cut materials (e.g. hardened steels, superalloys, etc) due to its exceptional mechanical properties. In practice, PcBNs are coated with a ceramic film to prevent and prolong the onset of tribo-oxidation and abrasive wear. Although there is not a unique consolidated opinion regarding the benefits of coatings in PcBN, most of the bibliography agrees on their use when involving hard turning operations. Most of the research address the tool performance and wear mechanisms, whereas information involving materials science aspects of PcBN and coated PcBN tools, on the basis of understanding microstructure – mechanical properties correlations, is quite limited. In this regard, this thesis focusses on studying hardness, fracture toughness and wear resistance as they are key mechanical properties controlling the mechanical integrity and reliability of the tool, which are related with the contact response, fracture resistance (e.g. premature chipping) and effective tool life, respectively. Four distinct substrates of the coated PcBN grades are studied and first characterized, including the development of characterization and testing protocols. In doing so, focus ion beam tomography and three-dimension (3D) image reconstruction was implemented to study the bulk microstructural characteristics of a PcBN grade with high cBN content and metallic binder. It was found to be a powerful and useful method to gain in-depth knowledge and understanding the microstructural characteristics of PcBN composite materials, additionally to those gathered by conventionally 2D method. The study then focuses on the assessment of the micromechanical properties of PcBN composite materials, as they are known to be key for optimizing their performance through microstructural design. High-speed nanoindentation is successfully implemented to characterize and correlate microstructure with local mechanical properties of such hard and stiff composite materials; where two different methodologies, 1D and 2D Gaussian, are used for statistically deconvoluting the data. It is found that the harder PcBN grade is clearly related with the high cBN content. A scaled-up method was employed to evaluate the contact response of uncoated PcBN grades. The higher cBN content and metallic binder grade, exhibits higher resistance to crack nucleation and a more gradual transition through different damage scenarios due to the concomitant increase of hardness and fracture toughness of this grade. Regarding fracture toughening mechanisms, crack path changes from propagation across the ceramic binder to transgranular fracture through cBN particles, as the cBN content increases. Very interesting, fracture toughness is enhanced by crack interaction with intrinsic sub-grained or twin boundaries within the individual cBN particles as well as by crack deviation through nano cBN particles dispersed in the binder. Afterwards, research was aimed to characterize coated PcBN (with different chemical nature and bias voltage), mainly in terms of coating adhesion strength and mechanical integrity of bulk coated systems as a function of the PcBN substrate microstructural assemblage. Mechanical response of the coated system, assessed by using Rockwell C indentation technique and scratch testing, is strongly dependent on the underneath substrate microstructural assemblage; and therefore, its different intrinsic hardness-toughness correlation. Finally, TiAlN-coated PcBN inserts were used to mill a hardened cold work tool steel. It was proposed as an exploratory study of milling performance of coated PcBN systems to assess the onset of coating failure without involving the emergence of other wear phenomena (e.g. thermally-driven ones).

Thesis abstract: Bone defects pose a major clinical and socio-economic burden and there is a clear need for new bone grafting strategies that take into account the physical-chemical properties of the native bone, to help treat bone defects in a time- and cost-effective way.Autografts are considered the gold standard due to their biological performance, however, additional surgical procedures for bone harvesting poses drawbacks. For this reason, the industrial- and scientific communities have focused on the development of synthetic bone grafting solutions. The present PhD thesis advances in the development of biomimetic personalised bone grafting solutions, including the clinical validation and the development of new material formulations with improved mechanical performance. Chapter 1: Gives an insight into the general context of bone regeneration and the materials used as bone substitutes, emphasising the need for innovative personalised synthetic bone grafts. This chapter offers an overview of additive manufacturing techniques and frequently employed ceramics in bone tissue engineering and their consolidation strategies. Further, a global presentation is given on their clinical translation, especially emphasising calcium phosphates and MimetikOss® 3D. Chapter 2: Focuses on evaluating the clinical performance of the 3D-printed bone graft MimetikOss® 3D in a horizontal vestibular augmentation. The ridge in the anterior maxilla is reconstructed with a synthetic patient-specific bone graft with a staged approach for dental implant placement. 3D-printed bone grafts permit a perfect fit in the surgical site without any additional shaping, which reduces surgery time compared with other bone augmentation techniques (e.g., guided bone regeneration, standard blocks). The bone graft is completely osseointegrated and its macropores colonised by newly formed bone at 10-months post-surgery without signs of encapsulation. A stable bone gain is achieved, resulting in a fully restored bone width. Dental implants were placed without the need for regrafting and stayed stable at 1- year post-loading, demonstrating the clinical relevance of these bone grafts in vestibular bone augmentations. Chapter 3: Encompasses two routes for incorporating PLGA, as a binder or as a coating, to 3D-printed self-setting scaffolds, taking advantage of their low-temperature hardening, to enhance their mechanical performance. The addition of PLGA increases the capacity for plastic deformation, which significantly improves their toughness (by a 2.6-fold and 4.2-fold change in flexion for PLGA as a binder and as a coating, respectively; and by an 8-fold and 1.6-fold change in compression, respectively), while preserving the in vitro cell viability of MimetikOss® 3D (with MG-63 and hMSC cells). The configuration with PLGA as binder is the better option regarding the enhancement in mechanical performance and osteogenic differentiation (2-fold and 1.5-fold change increase for ALPL and RUNX2 expressions, respectively). Screwability tests demonstrate that the enhanced mechanical properties increase the fixability of the scaffolds in a complex fixation indication in the jaw. Chapter 4: Discusses the impact, limitations, and challenges of 3D-printed biomimetic bone grafts and emphasises the steps remaining before transferring the new technology to the market. It is shown that the developments made in this PhD thesis can be beneficial for the patients and have a positive impact on society. Composite patient-specific bone grafts have an impact on cost, time and performance of the future bone grafting solutions, and they strive towards added value in personalised medicine. This will help treat complex and large bone defects in a way that benefits both the clinician and the patient and encourages sustainable healthcare based on synthetic biomaterials. This technology was protected by a filed patent application, however, there is still work left before it can be translated to the market.

Thesis abstract: This thesis aims to deepen in the understanding of the circular economy of plastics through a scientific and design approach. It has focused on packaging waste as it is the sector with the highest priority and contribution to the European legislation for the transition to a circular economy of plastics. This legislation states that at least 50% of its plastic waste must be available to be recycled by 2025. The waste production and management system was first characterized using MFA (material flow analysis) and LCA (life cycle assessment). The second part of the research is focused on understanding the mixed fraction of waste and the behaviour of the materials obtained from its open loop recycling. That was conducted characterizing the materials and their application. Using the principles of “cascade recovery”, a suitability indicator has been modelled, useful for design decisions and the definition of circularity policies. The main results indicate that the effective recycling rate in Spain for 2017 (the last year for which figures are available) is 11%, far below the 50% required by European regulations and even further away from the 70% declared by the official organism in charge of its management and monitoring. The figures are also difficult to improve, even if selective collection were to increase, due to the high presence of around 50% of film plastics, with very low recyclability. In order to achieve the EU’s objectives, an alternative solution based on technically and economically viable solutions has been proposed. Even though it would greatly improve the circularity of the system, it would also lead to an increase in GHG emissions and a pressure on forest resources that is not sutainable. The second part of the thesis focused on the characterisation of the mixed fraction of plastics, as it is the material stream that will play the most important role in a scenario of massive selective collection. It is also the least known fraction. The recycled materials obtained have been characterised in terms of composition, shaping processes, mechanical properties, environmental impact and aesthetic features. On this basis, an investigation has been conducted into the range of applications that have been manufactured using that material over the last 20 years. An environmental modelling of open loop recycling has been developed by evaluating the substitution of different types of materials and comparing it to a hypothetical close loop recycling of plastics. According to the results, the environmental performance of open loop recycling is superior to that of close loop recycling in almost all scenarios and is therefore a preferable alternative in terms of CO2 emissions. In the third block of the investigation, the potential for implementation in the mixed plastic market is defined. The suitability of the different applications taking into account both the ecological credentials, as well as the aesthetics and the industrial operation has been determined. The results indicate that applications such as road markings and reusable industrial packaging are highly suitable applications for mixed recycled plastics with a large potential market. However, an important problem has been detected in terms of aesthetics and smell for use in domestic products. Once the most suitable applications and their respective market shares have been determined, the consequences at a national scale of the massive introduction of a new flow of materials such as mixed recycled plastic has been evaluated. The results obtained indicate that open loop recycled plastic has a greater potential for improving the circularity of plastics than close loop recycled plastic, with a greater potential for reducing CO2 emissions and with a greater potential market.

Thesis abstract: Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) prepared by mechanical alloying followed by spark plasma sintering usually outweigh the high-temperature mechanical behavior of as-cast counterpart alloys. Despite that, few studies have been conducted in order to understand their deformation mechanisms associated with these alloys and their particular microstructures (ultrafine grain size and considerable presence of secondary phases). The present work reports the synthesis, the microstructural characterization, and the constitutive modeling the AlCrxFeMoNbTiV2 (x = 0.15, 0.4, 0.8) RHEAs prepared by powder metallurgy, aiming to contribute to the comprehension of the deformation mechanisms behind the high-temperature mechanical behavior of RHEAs obtained with this fabrication route, as well as of the composition-microstructure-properties of RHEAs.In order to do so, the study was divided into three parts. In the first one, the effect of composition and milling time over themicrostructural and particle evolution of the powder was investigated. In the second part, the effect of Cr content and of a heat treatment over phase formation, microstructure, and grain size was investigated. In the third part, the samples were subjected to compression testing between 950 °C and 1100 °C and between 0.0005 s-1 and 0.01 s-1 to obtain the constitutive equations of the peak stress. Additionally, the microstructure of some of the deformed samples was characterized to find microstructural hints associated with the different potential softening and deformation mechanisms. During the milling study, it was observed that most of the changes occurred during the firsts 50 h, resulting in an average particle size of 7 µm and a nanostructured bcc+hcp microstructure. Except for Mo, none of the constituent elements considerably affected the microstructure or the particle size of the milled powders. The as-sintered samples, fabricated using powder milled for 50 h, successfully presented an ultrafine-grained and multiphase microstructure, constituted by a V,Mo-rich bcc matrix, accompanied by Fe,Nb-rich Laves phases, Al2O3 particles, and Ti,Nb-rich carbides. For reference, a hardness of 1124 HV0.3 was obtained in the as-sintered samples. The average grain size of the matrix phase decreased from 0.40 µm to 0.21 µm with further Cr content; however, the high-temperature mechanical properties were not affected. On the other hand, after the heat treatment, the average grain size increased up to 1.5 µm without affecting the phase equilibrium though. In opposition to the Cr content, the heat treatment enhanced the yield strength in a considerable manner: a specific yield strength of 98 MPa·g-1·cm3 at 1000 °C was obtained in these samples, three times that of the as-sintered sample. Regarding the constitutive modeling, the power law excellently fitted the experimental data, resulting in an exponent of 2.45, indicating that grain boundary sliding governed the high-temperature deformation of the studied alloy, just as it does in ultrafine-grained size traditional alloys. Additionally, an elevated activation energy of 527 kJ·mol-1 was obtained, associated either with a high softening resistance as well as with the considerable presence of secondary phases. In the case of the heat-treated samples, dislocation climbing and glide seemed to govern the deformation (at least at 1000 °C), explaining the enhanced strength, attributed to the hindered grain boundary mobility due to the larger grain size.

Quality

The Validation, Monitoring, Modification and Accreditation Framework (VSMA Framework) for official degrees ties the quality assurance processes (validation, monitoring, modification and accreditation) carried out over the lifetime of a course to two objectives—the goal of establishing coherent links between these processes, and that of achieving greater efficiency in their management—all with the overarching aim of improving programmes.
