Post-Doctoral Research Associate, Magnetic Materials Group, I16 - Fixed Term 3 years
About Us
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, biological and earth sciences.
About the Role
We have an opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to join the Magnetic Materials Group as part of the beamline I16 team. I16 has become an international reference point for the international condensed matter community exploring phenomena such as magnetic, charge, and orbital ordering in complex materials. The PDRA will make important contributions to the development of a state-of-the-art phase plate retarder, which precisely controls the polarization of the incident light.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a research programme centred on investigating non-collinear or chiral magnetic structures using polarised x-rays, as well as magnetic and structural domains in strongly correlated electron systems and functional materials. Interested candidates are encouraged to propose research activity that exploits the unique polarised light capabilities of the beamline. An essential aspect of the role will be to work collaboratively with the user community.

About You
You will hold (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in condensed matter physics, or a closely related discipline, and you should have some experience in the use of scientific instrumentation,
You will be motivated and willing to participate in the activities of the Magnetic Materials Group, particularly the in-house research programme and technical developments on I16 closely related to your research activity.
Your scientific interests should be in one of more of the following fields: strongly correlated electron systems, determination of complex magnetic structures, functional magnetic materials e.g., multiferroics, magnetically frustrated and chiral materials.
You will need to demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
Benefits
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 25 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. Diamond has a vibrant PDRA community, with opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations across the science groups and on the Harwell campus.
