The main aim of the programme is to provide students with training in the sciences and technologies that are most widely applied and useful in the aerospace field. The programme covers the fundamentals of theory and practice, as well as methodology, and provides general training in research techniques, all with the aim of producing original, high-quality research papers (doctoral theses) in the fields indicated. Students learn about the most relevant scientific and technical advances in these fields, the scientific and technical methods used by research teams to achieve them, and technological and industrial applications related to these developments. Students gain advanced knowledge and skills in aerospace science and technology and the preparation required to undertake research, development and innovation activities in this area.

The doctoral programme in Aerospace Science and Technology cuts across several research areas recognised as priorities at the UPC: science, civil engineering, ICT engineering and industrial engineering. Aerospace research and development generates high added value, and research in this area has a wide range of applications in other fields. In a knowledge society, a doctoral programme in aerospace science and technology is therefore a tool for continuous development. Companies in the aerospace sector are increasingly seeking to recruit staff with doctoral level training to sustain the continuous innovation needed in this highly competitive sector. Graduates of the UPC doctoral programme in Aerospace Science and Technology have an essential role to play as drivers of innovation and in supporting socio-economic development.

General information

Access profile

There are a wide range of degrees that qualify students for admission to the doctoral programme in Aerospace Science and Technology. The applicants considered most suitable for admission are those who have completed a master's degree in Aerospace Science and Technology, or a master's degree related to the scientific field of the programme. Master’s degrees in aeronautical engineering or in the area of space physics are considered particularly suitable.

University graduates who have significant research experience or a specialisation in one of the scientific fields of the programme and a basic knowledge of aspects of air navigation may also be considered for admission. (Students who do not possess this knowledge can be oriented so that they complete the minimum number of bridging courses necessary to acquire it.)

In addition to this academic background, it is considered important that applicants have certain personal characteristics – namely, an interest in the research projects carried out within the framework of the programme; critical and analytical skills; initiative and perseverance; the ability to work in a team; and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Foreign non-Spanish speaking students must have an advanced level of English that enables them to conduct research work, participate in presentations, follow courses, and write their doctoral thesis and associated reports in correct English.

Output profile

Doctoral candidates who complete a doctoral degree will have acquired the following competencies, which are needed to carry out quality research (Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January, which regulates official doctoral studies):

Duration of studies and dedication regime

Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, counted from the date of first enrolment in the relevant programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is seven years from the date of first enrolment in the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. To calculate these periods, the date of deposit is considered to be the date on which the thesis is made publicly available for review.

If a doctoral candidate has a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%, the maximum period of study is six years for full-time students and nine years for part-time students.

For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years.

When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the requirement to complete this minimum period of study.

Temporary disability leave and leave for the birth of a child, adoption or fostering for the purposes of adoption, temporary foster care, risk during pregnancy or infant feeding, gender violence and any other situation provided for in current regulations do not count towards these periods. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which must inform the Doctoral School.

Doctoral candidates may request periods of temporary withdrawal from the programme for up to a total of two years. Requests must be justified and addressed to the academic committee responsible for the programme, which will decide whether or not to grant the candidate's request.

Extension of studies
If a doctoral candidate has not applied to deposit their thesis before the expiry of the deadlines specified in the previous section, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may, at the request of the doctoral candidate, authorise an extension of this deadline of one year under the conditions specified for the doctoral programme in question.

Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:

  • The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate not having completed their annual enrolment or applied for a temporary interruption.
  • The doctoral candidate not having formalised annual enrolment on the day after the end of the authorisation to temporarily interrupt or withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate receiving a negative reassessment after the deadline set by the academic committee of the doctoral programme to remedy the deficiencies that led to a previous negative assessment.
  • The doctoral candidate having been the subject of disciplinary proceedings leading to their suspension or permanent exclusion from the UPC.
  • A refusal to authorise the extensions applied for, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.3 of these regulations.
  • The doctoral candidate not having submitted the research plan in the period established in Section 8.2 of these regulations.
  • The maximum period of study for the doctoral degree having ended, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.4 of these regulations.

Dismissal from the programme means that the doctoral candidate cannot continue studying at the UPC and that their academic record will be closed. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission, and the committee must reevaluate the candidate in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.

A doctoral candidate who has been dismissed due to having exceeded the time limit for completing doctoral studies or due to an unsatisfactory assessment may not be Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Page 17 of 33 admitted to the same doctoral programme until at least two years have elapsed from the date of dismissal, as provided for in sections 3.4 and 9.2 of these regulations.

Foreign non-Spanish speaking students must have an advanced level of English that enables them to conduct research work, participate in presentations, follow courses, and write their doctoral thesis and associated reports in correct English.

Access requirements

As a rule, applicants must hold a Spanish bachelor's degree or equivalent and a Spanish master's degree or equivalent, provided they have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits on the two degrees (Royal Decree 43/2015, of 2 February).

Applicants who meet one or more of the following conditions are also eligible for admission:

a) Holders of official Spanish degrees or equivalent Spanish qualifications, provided they have passed 300 ECTS credits in total and they can prove they have reached Level 3 in the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education.
b) Holders of degrees awarded in foreign education systems in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), which do not require homologation, who can prove that they have reached Level 7 in the European Qualifications Framework, provided the degree makes the holder eligible for admission to doctoral studies in the country in which it was awarded.
c) Holders of degrees awarded in a country that does not belong to the EHEA, which do not require homologation, on the condition that the University is able to verify that the degree is of a level equivalent to that of official university master's degrees in Spain and that it makes the holder eligible for admission to doctoral studies in the country in which it was awarded.
d) Holders of another doctoral degree.
e) Holders of an official university qualification who, having been awarded a post as a trainee in the entrance examination for specialised medical training, have successfully completed at least two years of training leading to an official degree in a health sciences specialisation.

Note 1: Regulations for access to doctoral studies for individuals with degrees in bachelor's, engineering, or architecture under the system prior to the implementation of the EHEA (CG 47/02 2014).

Note 2: Agreement number 64/2014 of the Governing Council approving the procedure and criteria for assessing the academic requirements for admission to doctoral studies with non-homologated foreign degrees (CG 25/03 2014).

Legal framework

Admission criteria and merits assessment

• Academic record (weighting: 50%)
• Motivation (weighting: 30-40%)
• Knowledge of languages (weighting: 10-20%). For applicants who do not speak Spanish, a good level of English is essential (a prerequisite) and will not be considered an additional merit.

Other points that are not requirements but will be taken into consideration in the context of the weighted requirements listed above:
• Research experience.
• Personal contact by e-mail or in face-to-face interviews.
• Grants or scholarships from the applicant’s country of origin (for foreign students).
• Whether or not the student will work exclusively on preparing their thesis.

Training complements

The academic committee for the programme may require that doctoral students pass specific bridging courses. In such cases, the committee will keep track of the bridging courses completed and establish appropriate criteria to limit their duration.

Bridging courses will provide research training. In no case may doctoral students be required to enrol for 60 or more ECTS credits. (The academic regulations for doctoral courses state that bridging courses may also provide cross-disciplinary training, but it is anticipated that this point will be changed so that bridging courses are associated only with research training credits, particularly in the case of students admitted to a doctoral programme with a bachelor’s degree that carries 300 ECTS credits.)

Taking into account the doctoral student activity report, the academic committee for the programme may propose measures that complement those specified in the regulations and which result in doctoral students who do not meet the specified requirements being excluded from the programme.

Students admitted to the programme will be required to take bridging courses on general subjects related to air navigation if their academic background does not include studies in this area. This knowledge is the bedrock of the programme. It is therefore absolutely essential that all graduates of the programme have this general and specific knowledge. An example of this would be students whose thesis focuses on a topic related to aircraft (e.g. materials used in avionics or subsystems), for whom a partial knowledge would be sufficient. This partial knowledge should be complemented by other more general knowledge of the fundamentals of aeronautics.

Exceptional students admitted with a notable background in research, and those who have not completed a master's degree in aeronautics (or a similar degree) but hold an entrance qualification that is closely aligned with the content of the programme, may be exempted from this requirement provided that their thesis is clearly focused on a topic in the field of aeronautics or aerospace science and technology (on the understanding that in the course of producing such a thesis they will acquire the minimum knowledge of general content required.)

Enrolment period for new doctoral students

Students enrolling in the doctoral programme for the first time must do so by the deadline specified in the admission decision.
Unless otherwise expressly indicated, enrolments corresponding to admission decisions issued from the second half of April on must be completed within the ordinary enrolment period for the current academic year.

Procedure for the preparation and defense of the research plan

Doctoral candidates must submit a research plan, which will be included in their doctoral student activity report, before the end of the first year. The plan may be improved over the course of the doctoral degree. It must be endorsed by the tutor and the supervisor, and it must include the method that is to be followed and the aims of the research.

At least one of these annual assessments will include a public presentation and defence of the research plan and work done before a committee composed of three doctoral degree holders, which will be conducted in the manner determined by each academic committee. The examination committee awards a Pass or Fail mark. A Pass mark is a prerequisite for continuing on the doctoral programme. Doctoral candidates awarded a Fail mark must submit a new research plan for assessment by the academic committee of the doctoral programme within six months.

The committee assesses the research plan every year, in addition to all of the other activities in the doctoral student activity report. Doctoral candidates who are awarded two consecutive Fail marks for the research plan will be obliged to definitely withdraw from the programme.

If they change the subject of their thesis, they must submit a new research plan.

Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director

The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.

The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.

PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.

The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.

A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.

Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.

If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.

The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.

For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.

More information at the PhD theses section

Permanence

Thesis abstract: This thesis aims at simulating thermally-driven winds in mountain-valley systems, using the open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software OpenFOAM. Thermal-driven winds occur in mountain-valley regions due to temperature gradients induced by the lower atmosphere’s diurnal heating-cooling cycle. The contemporary energy market is particularly interested in thermal-driven winds since they exhibit greater regularity and periodicity than synoptic winds and thus can be more predictable. In the first phase of this research, the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes k–ε turbulence model is validated on a 3D geometry by comparing its results to large-eddy simulations described in the literature. Then, a computational model of an idealised 2D mountain-valley configuration is created to mimic thermally-driven winds. In this work, the most suitable top surface boundary conditions (BC), field temperature, and pressure initial conditions (IC) are examined. A transient solver is used to address the buoyant, turbulent flow of incompressible fluids. In contrast to traditional mechanisms of convection of fluid flows associated with pressure gradients, buoyancy is the driving force of convection of the studied thermally-driven flows. In this work, temperature is linearly dependent on altitude, which is imposed as BC on the mountain slope, resulting in thermally-driven wind generation. The minimal computational domain height required to successfully replicate thermally-driven winds is also explored, as are the effects of altitude-dependent and altitude-independent IC on the results. In particular, slip-wall BC on the fluid domain’s top surface and constant temperature IC were found to be the best options because slip-wall BC has produced results which are in good agreement with LES models, whereas constant temperature IC has simulated neutrally stratified atmospheric boundary layer flows. The proposed numerical setup has accurately recreated the typical flow velocity patterns along the slope. The impact of the valley width on the anabatic (up-slope) and katabatic (down-slope) flow behaviour was also examined. Although increasing the valley width has no substantial effect on the thermally-driven flow velocity (along-slope), it does cause a displacement of the position of the associated convective cell. The influence of the roughness length on the flow behaviour is explored by varying the needed computational domain height. Comparing the effect of different values of roughness lengths as well as comparing uniform and nonuniform sand grain roughness is performed. The effect of the temperature diurnal cycle on the thermally-driven winds is also explored. Then, this research also examines how the mountain slope angle affects the along-slope flow velocity, slope-normal velocity, and turbulent kinetic energy. Finally, a wide range of numerical simulations allow to investigate the influence of various wall functions on modelling thermally-driven flows. To sum up, it is concluded that CFD models can replicate the challenging atmospheric boundary layer flows with sufficient accuracy, which can help in determining the most suitable wind turbines for specific sites in mountainous regions.

Thesis abstract: Currently, half of the satellites do not reach 20% of their expected lifetime. The possibility of recycling these "zombie satellites" (ZS) with limited capabilities would optimize this on-orbit infrastructure, reducing unnecessary launches and being more cost-effective. A 12U CubeSat costs around €2.5 million to manufacture and launch. In this way, there would be no need to launch new satellites for new missions, resulting in positive environmental and economic impacts. This research proposes an ecological approach to satellite design and operation, integrating space sustainability strategies and green practices within the NewSpace paradigm. For a comprehensive analysis of the satellite lifecycle, eco-friendly and lean manufacturing characteristics need to be integrated. This concept aims to consolidate efforts towards a sustainable space and considers innovative technologies for standard satellites. This doctoral thesis undertakes a research study and practical experiences focused on small satellites, divided into 6 parts with 12 chapters. The first part, with two chapters, introduces space sustainability and the Eco-LeanSat concept, emphasizing a sustainable approach to satellite manufacturing and the reuse of capabilities after failure. It addresses the evolution of smallsat capabilities and institutional efforts to promote sustainability strategies. The second part, comprising two chapters, deals with proposals for reusing satellites that have failed in orbit. Chapter three analyzes the most common failures in smallsats and proposes mission design to reuse these capabilities and prevent them from becoming space debris. Chapter four studies the causes of failures arising from the space environment. The third part proposes agile methodologies, Lean Six Sigma, and Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) software for satellite manufacturing, applied to NanoSat Lab missions: 3Cat-4 and 3Cat-8, and the Colombian mission 3ColStar. Chapter five applies Lean Six Sigma to the 3Cat-8 mission, identifying bottlenecks and optimizing execution. Chapter six presents the preliminary design of the 3ColStar mission, incorporating MBSE software. Chapter seven develops algorithms for the Attitude Control System in the 3Cat-8 mission. Chapter eight performs thermal analysis of the 3Cat-4 mission. The fourth part, with chapter nine, addresses legal considerations for future sustainable missions, highlighting the lack of specific regulations for satellite reuse in orbit. Chapter ten proposes future studies with a sustainability focus. The fifth part includes appendices of the mentioned chapters, and the sixth part lists publications and other academic activities conducted during the doctoral study

Thesis abstract: Motivated by recent advances in computational technology aiming at exascale capabilities, which implies a need for applicationscapable of taking advantage of these new supercomputing architectures, this work will present two algorithms aimed at implementing an efficient and low-dissipation algorithm focused on LESand DNS of turbulent compressible flows. The basis for the algorithms is the Continuous Galerkin method applied to elements whose nodes and quadrature points areformed from the Gauss-Lobatto-Legendre roots, resulting in a SpectralElements Method. Throughout this work, it will be evidenced that this formulation leads to highly efficient kernels for discretizingthe convective and diffusive terms of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, with the added benefit that the order of the scheme is coupled with the order of the shape functionpolynomials employed by the elements themselves, significantly simplifying the process of increasing the order of the scheme. To achieve a stable Total Variational Diminishing algorithm, the \acrshort{sem} scheme will be paired with an EntropyViscosity-based stabilization model and a suitable splitting of the nonlinear convective terms will be employed to eliminate aliasing issues that occur in the \acrshort{sem} formulation. This spatial discretization is then coupled with both an explicit and a semi-implicit scheme to account for the temporal nature ofthe flow equations. The explicit version of the algorithm is expected to be simple and efficient per time step, but due to its \acrshort{cfl} condition limitation, the semi-implicit version is alsoproposed to allow for better overall performance incases where the time-step becomes overly limited, such as in wall-bounded flows.Considering the focus on producing a \acrshort{cfd} application towards the exascale future, an important aspect of this work isthat both algorithms are proposed with a full \acrshort{gpu}implementation in mind: the use of accelerators is expected to be a key aspect of future supercomputing architectures, and thus itis important to design these algorithms with this in mind.Examples detailing the performance of both algorithms will be presented both in the case of a single device and when distributedarchitectures using multiple devices are employed.

As ATM systems evolve, more responsibilities like flight plan adjustments and separation management are expected to shift from ground-based controllers to aircraft, emphasizing the need for precise trajectory estimation. The research primarily focuses on improving single-aircraft trajectory estimation and guidance mode identification, important for safe and efficient operations of both ground-based and airborne Decision Support Tools (DSTs). The core of the work is the development of sophisticated Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) algorithms enhanced with advanced filtering techniques, including Kalman filters and Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) methods. These enhancements address challenges such as managing uncertainties, potential model mismatches, and identifying hidden guidance modes, all of which significantly impact TP. A dynamic model for trajectory estimation and TP requires various inputs, including measurement data, weather forecasts, aircraft performance models, and operational constraints. However, a key challenge is the availability of aircraft intent, which includes operational instructions and guidance modes that are required for accurately predicting trajectories. Identifying guidance modes is essential for improving TP performance, as it directly influences how the aircraft is controlled during flight. The main objectives of this dissertation are to characterize the estimation and guidance mode identification problem and enhance existing filtering methodologies using Bayesian techniques that rely on multiple-model approaches. The work proposes an optimal IMM approach that uses Kalman filter-based methods, particularly the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), to manage the nonlinear dynamics predominant in vertical trajectory profiles, which are typically more uncertain than lateral paths. However, the research identifies limitations in the optimal method, particularly in tracking hybrid jumps— simultaneous changes in the state component and a mode switch. To overcome these limitations, the research introduces an enhanced IMM, named generalized IMM (GIMM), framework that better predicts transitions between guidance modes and tracks hybrid jumps more accurately. Additionally, SMC-based methods, i.e., Particle Filter (PF), is proposed as an alternative to manage complex flight dynamics and improve robustness in state estimation and mode identification. The effectiveness of these methodologies is validated through extensive testing with synthetic and real-flight data. Results show that the maximum percentage error in aircraft mass estimation is minimal, and other state variables are also accurately estimated with low delays in tracking hybrid jumps and identifying guidance modes. This research not only addresses the immediate needs of ATM systems under the TBO framework but also lays the groundwork for future advancements. Potential future directions include integrating lateral navigational maneuvers into system models, expanding the state vector to include additional flight parameters, and adapting these methodologies for multi-aircraft tracking scenarios. These enhancements aim to further refine TP capabilities, advancing ATM systems towards greater efficiency and safety.

Thesis abstract: The present thesis focuses on the resilient terrestrial and marine technological integration for navigation and positioning based on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), the Inertial Navigation System (INS), the Long Baseline Sonar (LBL) and the Conductivity, Temperature and Depth (CTD) Profile. The conclusions of the research are:1. In multi-GNSS kinematic Precise Point Positioning (PPP), three stochastic models are studied: white noise, random and constant walk, as well as the simple difference for Intersystem time (ISB). The equivalence between the white noise model and the simple difference is theoretically demonstrated. The urban kinematic and fixed station pseudokinematic results show that the constant ISB model improves the positioning accuracy and convergence time.2. To rationally distribute the weights of observations among different constellations, the robust Helmert Variance Component Estimate (HVCE) algorithm is proposed to post-fit stochastic models for pseudorange and phase observations in Multi-GNSS double-difference relative positioning. Experimental results show that HVCE improves positioning performance. Furthermore, the HVCE unit weight of multi-GNSS observations is stable, whose monthly averages are effective in improving the positioning accuracy of next month data, reducing the processing time.3. A resilient functional model has been designed based on the stationarity detection algorithm for GNSS/INS integration in vehicles, mitigating the divergence of the INS error during GNSS absences. According to the characteristic frequencies of the engine at idle, a stationarity detection method based on sliding window Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is proposed, which achieves a correction rate of 99.7% in our tests. This thesis also proposes to take into account the angular velocity of the Earth rotation for the yaw constraint. The results of the vehicle tests demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.4. For maritime navigation, the rigidly coupled (TC) LBL/CTD technology has been based on the robust IGG-III algorithm. With the CTD depth constraint, it has been shown that the dilution of precision (DOP) and positioning accuracy of LBL are optimized. The marine test results show that the robust algorithm can effectively improve the positioning performance by adjusting the stochastic model of observations.5. The LBL observation model is proposed considering the INS velocity errors for the INS/LBL integration, based on the stability of said errors during the propagation time of the LBL signal. The marine test results show that the proposed model can effectively improve the positioning accuracy and robustness of TC INS/LBL/CTD integration.6. A rigorous semi-tightly coupled (STC) GNSS/INS integration model is proposed based on complete position information. STC performs equally well as LC and TC models with good observations. In the INS failed test and the urban GNSS test, STC is more robust than LC and TC.7. Based on the observations of positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) sensors from multiple sources, this thesis proposes a recognition algorithm for the above and underwater scene. The algorithm analyzes the GNSS observable satellite number and DOP, the depth and salinity of the CTD, as well as the LBL observable signal number.8. Based on all the achievements proposed above, the integrated technology based on resilient integration of GNSS/INS/LBL/CTD is achieved. The test results show that the proposed integrated technology improves positioning in all overwater, underwater and transition scenes.

Thesis abstract: Natural movements of Earth and human-based activities generate continuous ground displacements, affecting human life and the economy. In order to mitigate and reduce the impact of such displacements, accurate and frequent monitoring of their spatial and temporal characteristics is necessary. Remote sensing technology offers diverse temporal and spatial assets that are suitable for actively monitoring and measuring the intensity of ground displacements. This information can then be used to prevent risks, forecast occurrences, and manage the associated hazards. One active remote sensing system, known as synthetic aperture radar (SAR), enables accurate and anytime measurements of ground displacements using a technique called interferometric SAR (InSAR). InSAR allows for millimeter scale monitoring of deformations over small to wide areas affected by geohazards such as earthquakes, volcanic activities, landslides, and subsidence. With the increasing availability of large data, short revisits, and higher spatial resolution of SAR images, a massive amount of InSAR products is now provided. These products need to be properly analyzed and prepared for ground displacements monitoring to offer valuable information for geohazard risk management and monitoring. This PhD study is pursuing development of methodologies to model ground displacements behavior of InSAR time series (TS). Hence, an empirical analysis and modeling of displacements TS is performed to investigate various and dominant trends using robust statistical approaches. To achieve this, an automatic classification tool for InSAR TS is proposed to accurately classify seven types of displacement trends using step-wise statistical tests and conditions. The proposed workflow is applied and evaluated on simulated and real InSAR TS datasets from Barcelona and three landslide cases in Granada, Spain. Furthermore, the study explores the idea of modeling and classifying displacement TS through machine learning (ML) models, which have revealed beneficial insights in classifying temporal data. Multiple supervised models are employed, incorporating customized features, such as autocorrelation and decomposition, to classify ground displacements into the afore-mentioned trends. The conventional performance assessment of ML models, along with pairwise intersections within random samples compared to the model-based method, are observed to compute the reliability and precision of TS classifier outputs. Finally, a forecasting tool is presented to support the prediction and identification of failures in hazardous regions. The tool is designed as an input for early warning system that utilizes spatio-temporal outcomes from a deep learning model known as long short-term memory (LSTM). It aims to support the activation of reliable alarms prior to high-risk events. Three failure cases in mining areas in Spain, Brazil, and Australia are considered to demonstrate the significance of temporal and spatial characteristics of InSAR data in detecting areas at risk of potential collapses in the near future.

Thesis abstract: Wall-modeled large eddy simulation (WMLES) is a practical tool to perform the wall-bounded large eddy simulation (LES) with less computational cost by avoiding explicit resolution of the region near the wall. However, its use is limited in flows that have high non-equilibrium effects, like separation and/or transition. In this work, three wall modeling strategies are presented, two of them based on high-fidelity data. First, a technique is presented to improve the robustness of the state-of-the-art algebraic wall shear stress model. Second, an equilibrium-data-driven wall shear stress model is developed using the LES of the channel data. The key purpose of this is to estabilish the methodology of model development using high-fidelity data. The model is built using a machine learning technique that uses gradient-boosted regression trees (GBRT). The objective of the model is to learn the boundary layer of a turbulent channel flow so that it can be used in significantly different flows where the equilibrium assumptions are valid. The importance of selecting the appropriate data for training and the importance of choosing the input of the model are described. The model is validated a priori and a posteriori. A posteriori tests are conducted by implementing the model in a multiphysics solver and using it in the turbulent channel flow and in the flow over a wall-mounted hump. The performance of the model is compared with an algebraic wall shear stress model to understand the strengths and shortcomings of the data-based models and further improve the same. In the next step, the model is upgraded to a non-equilibrium wall model by using non-equilibrium data for the training. The high-fidelity data chosen for training include the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of a double diffuser that has strong non-equilibrium flow regions and LES of a channel flow. The ultimate purpose of this model is to distinguish between equilibrium and non-equilibrium regions and to provide the appropriate wall shear stress. The ML system used for this study is also GBRT. The model is tested a priori and a posteriori. A posteriori tests are conducted on the diffuser, channel flows, flow over the hump, and junction flows. These tests showed that the model is very effective for corner flows and flows that involve relaminarization, while it performs rather less effectively in recirculation regions.

Thesis abstract: The quest to reduce carbon-based emissions has led to the use of alternative fuels and combustion systems. The aviation industry presents unique challenges due to the need for high-energy fuels, with e-fuels and hydrogen among the early candidates to facilitate net-carbon neutrality. To this end, LES simulations of turbulent reacting flows have emerged as key design and analysis tools. Capturing the complexities of realistic burner configurations poses a multi-scale, multi-physics problem. The inherent flow complexities and multi-fuel systems often result in practical systems operating in multi-regime combustion, a consequence of mixture inhomogeneity that promotes a complex response of burning rates and pollutant formation. It is therefore fundamental that the models reacting flows capture this complex response. Combustion can be solved using a variety of methods that balance generality and computational cost. Finite rate chemistry methods are the most general but also prohibitively expensive, while manifold-based methods offer a feasible option but with limited generality. This study addresses the problem of multi-regime combustion from both perspectives and advances the current state-of-the-art in these methods.Acceleration in the FRC solver is achieved by focusing on the most computationally expensive task: chemical integration. The two fold strategy reduces chemistry and utilises solvers that take advantage of the reduction. After briefly discussing chemistry reduction methods, a novel dynamic adaptive chemistry (TRAC), which is based on the dynamic tabulation of reactions in a low-order manifold space is presented. TRAC is analysed in canonical combustion problems, where a speedup of around 30 % was achieved at a negligible loss in accuracy. Despite the gains in computational performance complete description of turbulent reacting flows in the limit of the current computational resources is unfeasible, this leads naturally to the other facet of the study, which is to include generality in manifold based methods. Regarding manifold based methods, two strategies were analysed, namely, the multi-regime flamelet and the multi-mode combustion model. The models were tested in 1-D and 2-D benchmark problems, where the multi-mode combustion method excels at highly stratified flows. Though, for low and moderately stratified flows both the methods show better prediction than conventional manifold methods. The multi-model combustion model is applied to the multi-regime burner (MRB), where it reproduces global and conditional flame statistics. Overall, the objectives of realising multi-regime combustion at various levels of complexity was achieved using the different strategies studied. Lastly, concluding remarks are given for the usability of the methods in context of current HPC scenario.

Quality

The Validation, Monitoring, Modification and Accreditation Framework (VSMA Framework) for official degrees ties the quality assurance processes (validation, monitoring, modification and accreditation) carried out over the lifetime of a course to two objectives—the goal of establishing coherent links between these processes, and that of achieving greater efficiency in their management—all with the overarching aim of improving programmes.
