Duration of studies and dedication regime

Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, counted from the date of first enrolment in the relevant programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is seven years from the date of first enrolment in the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. To calculate these periods, the date of deposit is considered to be the date on which the thesis is made publicly available for review.

If a doctoral candidate has a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%, the maximum period of study is six years for full-time students and nine years for part-time students.

For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years.

When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the requirement to complete this minimum period of study.

Temporary disability leave and leave for the birth of a child, adoption or fostering for the purposes of adoption, temporary foster care, risk during pregnancy or infant feeding, gender violence and any other situation provided for in current regulations do not count towards these periods. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which must inform the Doctoral School.

Doctoral candidates may request periods of temporary withdrawal from the programme for up to a total of two years. Requests must be justified and addressed to the academic committee responsible for the programme, which will decide whether or not to grant the candidate's request.

Extension of studies
If a doctoral candidate has not applied to deposit their thesis before the expiry of the deadlines specified in the previous section, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may, at the request of the doctoral candidate, authorise an extension of this deadline of one year under the conditions specified for the doctoral programme in question.

Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:

  • The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate not having completed their annual enrolment or applied for a temporary interruption.
  • The doctoral candidate not having formalised annual enrolment on the day after the end of the authorisation to temporarily interrupt or withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate receiving a negative reassessment after the deadline set by the academic committee of the doctoral programme to remedy the deficiencies that led to a previous negative assessment.
  • The doctoral candidate having been the subject of disciplinary proceedings leading to their suspension or permanent exclusion from the UPC.
  • A refusal to authorise the extensions applied for, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.3 of these regulations.
  • The doctoral candidate not having submitted the research plan in the period established in Section 8.2 of these regulations.
  • The maximum period of study for the doctoral degree having ended, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.4 of these regulations.

Dismissal from the programme means that the doctoral candidate cannot continue studying at the UPC and that their academic record will be closed. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission, and the committee must reevaluate the candidate in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.

A doctoral candidate who has been dismissed due to having exceeded the time limit for completing doctoral studies or due to an unsatisfactory assessment may not be Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Page 17 of 33 admitted to the same doctoral programme until at least two years have elapsed from the date of dismissal, as provided for in sections 3.4 and 9.2 of these regulations.

Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director

The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.

The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.

PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.

The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.

A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.

Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.

If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.

The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.

For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.

Thesis abstract: To return to the roots that gave rise to Tuxtla Gutiérrez and in the absence of a protection model that recognizes its traditional architectural heritage, the characterization and enhancement of the constructive heritage of one of the oldest neighbourhoods of this city is proposed, Santo Domingo neighbourhood. The development of this research is carried out based on a broader analysis to comprehensively understand the problems that surround this heritage and generate more accurate guidelines for its safeguarding. From the urban dimension, as part of an urban area in a specific territory; from the social dimension, with the perspective of the inhabitants and, from the architectural-constructive dimension, to identify and value the building and construction types, in addition to detect a common injury pattern to influence intervention projects, individually or collectively. This contribution could provide a methodological basis to contribute to the safeguarding of traditional architectural heritage in other geographical areas with similar problems, as well as the comprehensive urban regeneration of historic urban areas, because the enhancement of built heritage is linked to the dynamics of uses and, therefore, to local culture, which is equivalent to strengthening the identity of its inhabitants and improving their quality of life.

Thesis abstract: This doctoral thesis aims to develop an Additive Manufacturing technique for the production of Ceramic Building Elements with controlled variable density. The research seeks to provide an alternative to the currently available building elements in the construction industry, focusing on the design of construction elements with specific characteristics through the manipulation of porosity. The hypothesis suggests that Additive Manufacturing technologies can be used to produce ceramic materials with controlled variable density, which could replace conventional systems composed of ceramics and complementary layers of different materials. Unlike other works, this proposal allows for the establishment of pore size and connectivity. The work methodology is divided into two complementary parts. On one hand, it focuses on developing the manufacturing means, including hardware and software, while on the other hand, it studies the resulting product, namely, the printed ceramics with variable density. A research, design, and construction process are carried out, which includes different steps such as studying the state of the art in additive manufacturing and materials with gradient function, selecting and constructing a 3D printer, developing a clay extrusion system adapted to the machine, calibrating the manufacturing process, defining porosity limits, creating design strategies, and manufacturing demonstration pieces. The results of this research will have broader implications in the field of architecture and construction. The additive manufacturing technique with controlled variable density will enable the creation of mono-material systems with improved properties, opening new possibilities in the design and construction of building elements. Furthermore, the use of a single constituent material with density variations can contribute to optimizing the management of construction waste and reducing the environmental impact of the industry. This research can also drive the advancement of additive manufacturing in producing materials with gradient function in various sectors, including aerospace and materials engineering. In summary, this doctoral thesis aims to develop an Additive Manufacturing technique for producing Ceramic Building Elements with controlled variable density. The methodology is based on research, design, and construction of manufacturing means, as well as the study of the resulting product. The results of this research will have implications in the design and construction of building elements, as well as in the advancement of additive manufacturing in other industrial sectors.

Thesis abstract: Environmental protection is a principle of both Millennium Development Goals and sustainable development, underscoring critical issues like greenhouse gases, global warming, and air pollution. Air pollution is a global challenge with severe consequences for the environment. Hence, city managers encounter an urgent need to explore the proper solutions to mitigate air pollution. This doctoral dissertation addresses air pollution reduction by harnessing the untapped potential of rooftops while focusing on pollutant reducers and taking into account specific characteristics of urban buildings. The study follows a five-phase framework, including initial investigation, feasibility study, solution exploration, sustainability evaluation, and city-scale optimization. The research method proposed in this thesis is validated for the first time in the context of Tehran, a densely populated and highly air-polluted megacity. The key achievements of this leading application encompass: feasible alternatives, sustainability assessment, optimal solutions, target building groups, and city-scale impact. Firstly, considering sustainability, effectiveness, and viability, the study identifies green roofs (GR) and photovoltaic (PV) systems as feasible rooftop-based alternatives. Second, novel sustainability assessment models are developed, combining methods like the Integrated Value Model for Sustainability Assessment (MIVES), Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats (SWOT), Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), simplified Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and sensitivity analysis. These models enable the evaluation of pollutant reducers in terms of their environmental, economic, and social sustainability. The results reveal that the most suitable types of GR and PV are semi-intensive green roofs (SIGR) and building-attached photovoltaics (BAPV). This is while the quantitation analysis discloses that SIGR is capable of reducing 4.8 kg/m2 CO2 and 52.4 g/m2 Particulate Matter (PM), and BAPV has the potential of mitigating 211 kg/m2 CO2 and 1.2 g/m2 PM per year. Third, a compound alternative (CA), combining both GR and PV, is proposed as an optimal solution, effectively surmounting the individual shortcomings of these technologies. The optimization using mathematical patterns unveils more suitability of PV compared to GR for the case of Tehran. In this sense, the most effective combination ratio for the execution phase simplifies to 3:1 (PV:GR). Fourth, a synergistic strategy is adopted to consider optimized pollutant reducers and target buildings simultaneously. Using the Geographic Information System (GIS), the study recommends focusing on residential buildings of medium height in medium surface scale as the ideal targets. Fifth and finally, implementing the optimized CA on selected target buildings provides a significant potential to decrease over 9% of total PM and CO2 emissions from all sources and sectors across Tehran. Furthermore, the study reveals the prospect of transforming selected groups of residential buildings into Zero-PM buildings in the operational phase. This dissertation provides valuable insights into addressing rooftop-based air pollutant reducer technologies and also offers a systematic approach that can be adapted to various urban contexts. The developed framework, models, and proposed future works, can assist decision-makers in selecting the most appropriate strategies, contributing to cleaner, more sustainable, and resilient urban environments worldwide. Keywords: Climate change; Sustainability assessment; Urban air pollution; Residential buildings; Rooftops

Thesis abstract: The field of architecture and engineering is currently experiencing significant changes due to advances in technology and the growing role of Artificial Intelligence. This shift is largely driven by the growing urgency of promoting more efficient buildings, especially considering its substantial impact on global greenhouse gas emissions and energy usage. Consequently, it is becoming important to focus on practical design choices and utilize effective strategies to enhance energy efficiency and overall building performance. This thesis presents a comprehensive approach to optimize the shape, solar orientation, and envelope configuration of social residential buildings in a humid subtropical climate (Koppen classification: Cfa) in the southern region of Brazil. The main objective is to simultaneously minimize both heating and cooling demands, and present optimal performance design and parameter ranges to improve efficiency energy in multifamily buildings. To achieve this, the study utilizes multi-objective optimization techniques with the support of a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). The simulations are conducted using the EnergyPlus while the optimization process is implemented through Python programming. This extensive computational effort involves a total of 480,000 simulations. The results of the optimization process demonstrate that by carefully selecting the optimal solar orientation, significant reductions in energy demand can be achieved. For instance, optimizing the solar orientation alone can lead to energy demand reductions of up to 5% for linear buildings and 11% for H buildings, when linked to the surroundings. Furthermore, when the envelope is properly addressed the energy demand between shapes achieves almost the same value. Moreover, the optimization of the building envelope configuration further enhances energy efficiency, resulting in remarkable reductions in total energy demand. In particular, linear buildings can achieve up to 60% reduction in energy demand, while H buildings reach up to 63% reduction. These findings highlight the potential benefits of considering solar orientation, surrounding shadows, and envelope design simultaneously during the early design stages of a project. The proposed three-phase optimization framework evaluates different parameter alternatives and presents a pratical guidelines to make informed decisions about the most energy-efficient configurations.

The main objective is to develop a homogeneous system of indicators to comprehensively measure the impact of these initiatives in the three areas of sustainability, which include social, economic and environmental aspects, thus contributing to the creation of a more complete urban model and highlighting the importance of the active participation of the social fabric in the urban space. The methodology adopted follows a continuous improvement approach, and includes an initial documentary exploration, a review of existing assessment systems, the design of the tool, validation through experts and case studies, and finally, the elaboration of an improved proposal of the assessment system. The result is an improved assessment system designed to measure the contribution of CIs to improving the sustainability of a neighbourhood or urban environment. The innovation lies in the inclusion of the spatial dimension and the adaptability for self-assessments of CIs, as current systems only focus on environmental, economic and, on a smaller scale, social aspects, without taking into account the spatial component. This spiral methodology allows for continuous improvement of the proposal, ensuring its relevance and quality. The research contributes not only to the theoretical understanding of the relationship between citizen participation and sustainability, but also offers a practical tool to evaluate and promote the role of initiatives in improving the sustainability of cities from a holistic perspective.

Thesis abstract: This thesis investigates the adhesion behavior between sprayed mortar and masonry substrates, focusing on the influence of compressive strength, mortar age, and surface roughness on adhesion strength. Through detailed experiments and comprehensive analysis, it seeks to better understand these factors and their impact on rehabilitation techniques for masonry structures. The results of this investigation not only expand theoretical knowledge about the adhesion behavior between mortar and masonry but also provide practical recommendations to improve the durability and effectiveness of retrofitting interventions.Experiments were conducted on samples with different compressive strengths (15 MPa, 30 MPa, and 45 MPa) to assess how these factors affect both tensile and shear adhesion strength. It was observed that the tensile adhesion strength decreases with increasing compressive strength of the masonry due to the brittle nature of high-strength materials. Specifically, masonry with a compressive strength of 15 MPa showed tensile adhesion strength ranging from 0.2 to 1 MPa, while masonry with a compressive strength of 40 MPa showed values concentrated between 0 and 0.1 MPa. This behavior is due to the fact that high-strength masonry tends to fail more abruptly, reducing its capacity to maintain adhesions under tension. On the other hand, the shear adhesion strength showed a positive correlation with compressive strength. Substrates with higher compressive strength provided greater shear capacity due to better mechanical interlocking facilitated by surface roughness. Experimental results demonstrated that the shear adhesion strength was almost double that of the tensile strength, highlighting the importance of surface texture in adhesion performance. The age of the mortar is also a crucial factor. Tests were conducted at 7 and 28 days to evaluate the development of adhesion strength over time. At 7 days, the adhesion strength was relatively low due to the ongoing hydration process and incomplete development of the mortar's mechanical properties. However, at 28 days, the adhesion strength increased significantly as the mortar achieved higher levels of hydration and improved mechanical properties. This underscores the importance of allowing adequate curing time in practical applications to ensure the longevity and effectiveness of reinforced structures.Surface roughness is a determining factor in adhesion strength. We measured roughness using the Joint Roughness Coefficient (JRC) and the arithmetic mean deviation (Ra) to quantify its impact. It was found that rougher surfaces facilitated better mechanical interlocking, improving adhesion strength. This finding highlights the importance of surface preparation in rehabilitation applications, where increasing the substrate's roughness can significantly enhance adhesion performance. The experiments revealed three typical modes of failure: adhesion disconnection, specimen fracture, and adhesion material fracture. Adhesion disconnection occurred when the adhesion strength was weaker than the individual strengths of the mortar and masonry, resulting in a clean separation at the interface without significant damage. Specimen fracture was mainly observed in samples with a fragile surface layer developed during mortar curing. Adhesion material fracture involved the rupture of the adhesion material itself, highlighting the impact of shear stress on adhesion integrity.

Thesis abstract: The present research is aimed at deepening the evaluation of adhesion in architectural tile coverings in the building sector; despite the improvement of new cementitious adhesives and new ceramic tiles, detachment failures still occur in tile coverings, which can be due to external forces (shocks, earthquakes, vibrations, etc.), inadequate prescription of the cementitious adhesive, incorrect installation, or lack of preparation of the substrate. How to recognize in an inspection the defective state of adhesion of a tiling of this type, in order to prevent detachment? At present, this adhesion is usually evaluated in the laboratory by means of destructive horizontal surface tensile testing systems described in the current regulations on cementitious adhesives. No non-destructive systems have been described for use on site in any layout. The objective of this research is to develop a non-destructive procedure for the evaluation of the state of adhesion of an architectural tiling that is of practical use at the construction site. Several existing alternative techniques, such as thermography or ultrasound, have been considered in the research, but finally it has been decided to focus on the analysis of the acoustic signal obtained by standardized percussion of a tiled tiling on site. This percussion technique has its antecedents in the traditional practice of the experienced architect who manually percussed the tiling with the knuckles of his hand and who, based on his experience, established the lack of adhesion as a defect associated with a "hollow and more vibrant" sound, compared to that of well-bonded tiles. Digital percussion recording analysis is a technique that is already being developed in the field of mechanics to assess the condition of fasteners. The methodology developed in this research is based on successive experimental campaigns in which the PhD student architect has been able to participate, evolving from the understanding of the different vibration phenomena of a free-standing tile depending on the support bonds, through the evaluation of the main vibration frequency of a percussive tiling to the analysis of the correlation between various proposed parameters related to energy, time and their frequency with respect to the values reached in standardized pull-off tests, before and after accelerated aging processes. It is concluded that the results achieved are very promising, although further work is needed to focus on how the acoustic signal emitted by the percussion is modified when it passes through not only the tile and the cementitious adhesive that binds it to the substrate, but especially when it passes through the contact interface between the two.

Thesis abstract: We live in a visually demanding environment. Most of our cognitive stimuli come from visual perception. In this context of widespread dependence on the sense of sight, studying the link between artificial light and cognitive tasks is key to interacting with our memory and attention, which are increasingly accustomed to dynamic environments. The objective of this research is to analyze the disciplines that can most influence learning: cognitive sciences, architecture, and education, to:First, analyze how some light parameters can affect learning, paying special attention to the impact of light on human perception and attention and how these affect memory.Next, analyze innovative teaching methodologies and how communication and learning technologies have been incorporated into the classroom. Finally, examine the evolution of educational spaces through case studies of schools worldwide over recent decades, delving into the ways lighting and control technologies have been integrated according to the needs of educational methods within the classroom. From the analysis of the implications of light on attention and memory, we will derive the possibilities that working with different light parameters in the classroom offers us; from the analysis of teaching methodologies, we will obtain the real needs of the current classroom; and from the case study analysis, we will gain the capacity for innovation in the classroom with new lighting strategies. The intersection of these three disciplines results in three alternative uses of lighting in educational spaces, which are subjected to an experimental analysis comparing performance on a task in the proposed scenes with performance under traditional lighting conditions to conclude new classroom solutions and future lines of research.A broad narrative review methodology has been used for the case studies, providing an overview of the problem of adapting lighting to usage and users within schools. To this end, sources published in architectural journals and significant examples with educational spaces that develop innovative teaching methodologies have been reviewed, and criteria for analyzing natural and artificial lighting considered throughout these cases have been established. An experimental methodology has been used to analyze the impact of three alternative lighting proposals based on situations not previously considered. In all three cases, a control group and a study group from two public schools in the province of Barcelona are considered. These proposals arise from the observation of a lack of consideration of an important light parameter in the transmission of information in a visual environment: color. Finally, the results reflect the need to adapt and make classrooms more flexible according to the different learning needs within the classroom and the possibility of doing so with proposals not previously considered regarding color and dynamism parameters.

Thesis abstract: Vernacular homes in Ecuador have progressively fallen into disuse despite being affordable constructions, quick to build and perfectly integrated with the environment, due to various social, economic, and cultural factors. It is proposed to analyze the conditions of habitability and materiality of rural homes built with vernacular techniques in the Coastal region of the country. Although 37% of the population resides in rural areas, rural housing has received little attention. The lack of information on housing models suitable for this population is evident, so this study aims to analyze the most relevant characteristics of traditional rural housing in relation to its location and the materials available in the environment. The country's housing conditions are examined, considering both the natural factors that influence architecture and the socioeconomic characteristics of the communities, highlighting the interaction between the natural environment and built structures. Through a detailed survey of ninety homes and the organization of the information collected through files, the aim is to reflect the detailed universe of the homes in their different areas and highlight the diversity of architectural types and construction techniques used in each area, as well as the architectural wealth of the region. In addition, the restrictions and challenges associated with the use of materials of natural origin compared to the predominant adoption of industrialized materials are explored. For the processing of the information obtained, an identification and analysis tool were developed that allows us to propose specific construction and conservation strategies, and based on the results, improve the application techniques and traditional materials that allow us to overcome the negative perception that exists towards them and promote their sustainable use in contemporary architecture. In addition to addressing the national production of the scope of study, cases from other regions of the planet with similar characteristics are also analyzed with the purpose of extracting lessons applicable to the Ecuadorian context through the interpretation of the results obtained, allowing the development of strategies for the preservation and promotion of vernacular architecture in a changing and globalized context. Finally, the implications of the research are discussed, and fundamental conclusions are offered about vernacular architecture in the coastal region of Ecuador, reflecting on the importance of preserving cultural identity and ancestral knowledge in the construction of sustainable and socially integrative homes, promoting construction practices. that respect and celebrate the cultural and environmental diversity of Ecuador. It is not intended to propose a specific housing model, but rather to offer strategies that allow these aspects to be considered in the development of sustainable, functional housing models in accordance with their context.

Thesis abstract: Gothic architecture first appeared in the Île-de-France region in the middle of the 12th century, fully developing throughout the 13th. The flying buttress has been defined as one of its characteristic architectural elements, and the contribution thereof is considered to have been essential to overcoming the great structural challenges posed by the new style. The theory behind the revival and intervention of Gothic buildings was developed starting in the 19th century. Ever since then, the diversity of approaches to the study of Gothic architecture has fostered different and often manifestly opposing views. As a singular element, the study of flying buttresses has been approached by a number of authors. However, to date, there has been no description of the overall stabilizing solution used in large Gothic cathedrals which also properly and completely defines how flying buttresses function as a part of such solution.Based on a critical analysis of the scientific/academic contributions made, this study determined the gaps that exist in knowledge of the function of flying buttresses and established a series of unknowns which, once elucidated through an all-new approach, made it possible to precisely and exhaustively describe such functioning. A specific study method was developed through the unifying theoretical framework of the Limit (or Plastic) Analysis with which models representative of a sufficiently extensive group of buildings were created. Specific calculation and graphing tools were used to do so, enabling easy handling and a qualitative interpretation of the findings. As a result of the application of this method to the case studies, prior statements were nuanced, completed and corrected with original contributions proving: matters relating to the function of flying buttresses, their contribution -and the nature thereof- to stabilizing buildings, as well as their geometry and positioning. The non-univocal behaviour of flying buttresses was verified in addition to their versatility in helping to stabilize major Early French Gothic temples.Despite the fact that the ultimate aim of this thesis was not to draw conclusions with regard to the material or chronological aspects of the flying buttresses studied, the findings achieved are no doubt highly useful to any subsequent research into knowledge of these architectural elements using other approaches and in other scientific fields.

Thesis abstract: This thesis investigates the feasibility and potential applications of flax fiber-reinforced lime mortars in masonry construction, particularly focusing on the seismic retrofitting of Unreinforced Masonry (URM) buildings. The composite material, featuring a non-woven structure of flax fiber layers within the lime mortar matrix, undergoes a comprehensive examination with a specific emphasis on mechanical properties, durability, and consistency. Structured as a collection of articles, the thesis covers various dimensions to provide a holistic understanding of the material's capabilities and applications. The first article delves into the mechanical characterization of Flax Fiber Reinforced Lime Mortars. This involves a rigorous assessment of properties such as tensile strength, compressive strength, flexural strength, and toughness. These mechanical attributes are crucial for determining the material's structural integrity and its potential effectiveness in retrofitting applications. In addition to mechanical properties, the thesis explores the durability of flax fiber-reinforced lime mortars. Durability tests are designed to simulate long-term exposure to environmental conditions, including moisture, temperature changes, and other potential stressors. Evaluating the material's resistance to these factors is essential for ensuring its performance and longevity in real-world applications. An integral part of the research involves investigating the optimal configuration of flax fiber layers within the lime mortar. This aspect aims to optimize the composite's flexibility, crack resistance, and chemical compatibility with historic masonry materials. The layered composition is a critical consideration for achieving the desired structural enhancements while maintaining the material's compatibility with historical structures. Furthermore, the thesis contributes to the understanding of the adhesion between flax fiber-reinforced lime mortars and masonry materials. The adhesion characteristics play a pivotal role in determining the effectiveness of the material as a retrofitting solution for URM buildings. The study aims to provide valuable insights into the mechanical properties, durability, and adhesion to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the material's suitability for historical masonry structures. In conclusion, this research, encapsulated in a series of articles, offers a thorough exploration of flax fiber-reinforced lime mortars for masonry construction. The emphasis on mechanical properties, durability, and adhesion positions the material as a potential innovative solution for retrofitting URM buildings. This not only aligns with sustainability goals but also ensures the preservation of cultural heritage. Looking forward, the thesis provides a foundation for further research, suggesting avenues such as numerical modeling and additive manufacturing for a more nuanced understanding and practical application of the developed materials in the construction industry.

Thesis abstract: In the area of architecture and construction, natural cement is the least known of traditional conglomerates. Most professionals in the sector who are interested in conglomerates have broad knowledge of the two types of lime and perhaps even of traditional plaster. However, they do not tend to be informed about natural cement. The aim of this thesis is to provide information about this type of cement in terms of how important its industry was in Catalonia and its meaning today. With this idea, we have organised the research into two parts. The first part provides a historical study of the material. It examines the first written references that reached us here, long before natural cement began to be manufactured, when and where the first natural cement was produced, how and where this industry spread around Catalonia, which types of natural cements were manufactured, their characteristics and properties, how and where they were manufactured, the first regulations governing the material, its uses, etc. This production was anonymous but relevant, with over a hundred and fifty years of history, from its beginnings in the mid-nineteenth century to the current time, spread out among various regions of Catalonia: Gironès, Alt Empordà, Ripollès and Berguedà, among many others. The second part, which we have called the present, is set from the transitory period of the civil war and postwar up to the study of natural cements that are manufactured today. A total of four quick-setting natural cements are examined. We have discovered their properties, characteristics, specific features, strengths and weaknesses.

Thesis abstract: Islamic geometric patterns represent a unique and intricate art form within Islamic art and architecture. They use a variety of precise geometric principles to tessellate surfaces. Due to their repetitive characteristics, Islamic geometric patterns provide an economic solution for the superficial ornamentation of walls, floors, ceilings, and even objects, while also offering magnificent aesthetic appeal. These patterns have played a significant role in the history of art and architecture across a wide range of regions from East to West, experiencing a peak of growth between the 8th and 14th centuries. However, in the digital era, they demonstrate challenges in their digital modeling due to their multifaceted structure. The geometric and cultural complexity of these patterns demands precise calculations and a deep understanding of their cultural context to be accurately represented in digital form. Otherwise, the resulting patterns can readily be classified as unacceptable or incorrect by experts. To address these challenges, this research pioneers the use of a computational method, which is based on formal grammar and is known as the String Rewriting Systems method (SRS), to tackle the problem of computational simulation of Islamic geometric patterns. This method employs linguistic principles such as symbols and alphabetic characters as its fundamental components, along with syntax commands and production rules, effectively representing and manipulating complex systems in a manner analogous to language processing.SRS has been used in various fields like linguistics, logic, and computer graphics. In computer-aided design, by using this method, a pattern can be generated by step-by-step conversion of a simple initial shape to the final structure. The utilization of strings and symbols, instead of shapes or mathematical formulas, provides a direct link between geometry and machine language and facilitates their communication. Moreover, it provides new formal potentials, previously unavailable in conventional methods. The methodology of this research involved collecting samples of historical Islamic geometric patterns (IGPs) and examining existing drawing techniques. These inputs were analyzed and compared with the requirements for applying SRS to model patterns. This comparison led to the development of a new morphological approach to IGPs, which was utilized to create an algorithm for constructing IGPs using SRS.The outcome of this research is a comprehensive solution for generating and manipulating Islamic geometric patterns in a digital environment. A CAD toolkit was developed as an add-on for Grasshopper, a plug-in for RHINO3D software. This widely accessible platform for architects and designers ensures consistent availability. In addition, it eliminates the need to design an entirely new platform and allows users to combine this toolkit with other existing tools within the primary software. This integration thereby expands its potential applications. To assess the effectiveness of the method in addressing the aforementioned challenges, experimental workshops were designed to test the toolkit, demonstrating the impact of the introduced methodology, achieving an 85% success rate in pattern production compared to 55% with conventional methods. Participant feedback validated the efficacy of SRS, signaling promising avenues for future research and development. Additionally, 22 IGPs were successfully restored and modeled, now publicly available in the toolkit. This method bridges the gap between digital technologies and traditional heritage, offering a systematic approach to the digital modeling of Islamic geometric patterns (IGPs). It facilitates and accelerates the modeling of numerous patterns while staying true to the original designs, eliminating the need to compromise on geometrical details.

Thesis abstract: This research focuses on the study and comparative analysis of buildings constructed with industrialized prefabrication systems, based on the premise that industrialization implies resource optimization, technological innovation and environmental sustainability. Taking advantage of the European regulatory framework on the subject, the analysis will be based on the methodology of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in selected cases under parametric criteria. The methodology will also be applied to buildings in the Central American region, which does not yet have a consolidated framework for the regulation of environmental sustainability strategies, and which is ideal given the growing use of new industrialized technologies for construction in the region, immersed in a context of seismic hazards. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has developed a set of LCA standards that focus on the technical and organizational aspects of a building. However, pragmatically, the studies are conducted using different approaches and there is insufficient clarity as to whether their results are comparable or useful for decision making in the design process and subsequent building evaluation. Many authors agree that it is difficult to make meaningful comparisons between the results and, therefore, to draw conclusions to inform project decision making. There are allegedly several reasons for this, such as: methodological differences, discrepancies in the scope of the evaluation, data uncertainties, differences in location, and differences between units of analysis. However, in the present research, these barriers have been overcome largely by developing a calculation model with an open database that allows the same type of data to be entered for all cases, allowing comparative analysis and verification of the parameters that affect the carbon footprint throughout its life cycle. The data was also compared to the state of the art. To this end, this thesis is divided into three parts: Part I: Introduction, which includes chapters I through VI. Part II: State of the Art, which contains chapters 1 through 8. Part III: Analysis, which contains chapters 9, 10, and 11. As a whole, it represents a qualitative and quantitative research on environmental sustainability in buildings and its influencing parameters, among which; optimization, life extension, circularity and energy independence. Among the main findings, it can be stated that the decarbonization of the life cycle of a building, even without the optimization of the construction systems, can be carbon neutral in the operational phase, thanks to the surplus of renewable energy generation (photovoltaic) associated with sunlight, depending on the latitude, which is one third higher in the tropics than in the Mediterranean area. The initial hypothesis that industrialized prefabrication contributes to environmental sustainability is confirmed, despite the fact that specialized structural systems designed for disassembly require a high mechanical performance that can only be achieved through the hybridization of materials; their end-of-life recovery leads to an average reduction of 60% in the carbon footprint. On the other hand, the optimization of buildings can begin by reducing their weight, especially in the case of soils with low bearing capacity, since foundations can represent up to 50% of the embodied carbon, significantly influencing the total carbon footprint; moreover, since foundations are monolithic, their non-recovery at the end of the building's life results in the loss of raw materials. These facts lead to the important lesson of performing LCA before demolishing a building, rather than just at the beginning of the project.

Thesis abstract: This thesis addresses the connections between housing and vulnerability by studying habitability in two of Barcelona’s most underprivileged neighbourhoods, as part of the debate on policies for housing rehabilitation and urban regeneration. Although there is a long tradition of increasingly multifaceted interventions it is still difficult to improve spatial conditions without leaving disadvantaged groups behind. This research is based on the idea that space plays an important role in socio-residential vulnerability and inequality, and that this role has not been studied sufficiently. An in-depth look grounded in the local context and conducted on a small scale can help to bridge the gap between the large-scale analyses provided by geographical socio-urban studies and the architectural analyses that generally guide the design and the implementation of rehabilitation programs. Our main goal is to analyse how spatial characteristics affect habitability in underprivileged areas, and to relate this with other structural factors of socio-residential vulnerability. We also hope to discuss the limitations and potential of rehabilitation polices in improving the living conditions of the most vulnerable neighbours. The study consists of an experimental analysis of housing conditions in four small underprivileged areas of Barcelona’s Besòs-Maresme and Raval neighbourhoods. With a focus on the smallest possible units of cohabitation (dwellings and common spaces), we carry out a multi-scalar approach based on extensive fieldwork to describe and evaluate residential spaces while taking into account the current inhabitants. The discussion on the role of space is addressed in three different ways:I. By analysing housing conditions and detecting the most common and severe shortcomings. This includes the description of their scale and opportunities for improvement.II. By detecting and locating critical cases and micro-inequities and describing their spatial and geographic distribution. III. By providing a context for these results in each sector in relation to morpho-typological characteristics, the history of public interventions, and non-spatial aspects such as forms of ownership and tenure or other sociodemographic and socioeconomic circumstances. The results of this study describe, localize and contextualize the general lack of adequate housing conditions and a significant proportion of critical cases in the studied areas. Particularly noteworthy are the lack of accessibility, environmental comfort and quality in interior shared spaces (common entryways, stairs and landings). Other severe deficiencies are more localized, like the insufficient dimension of interior and exterior spaces (both private and common). Micro-inequalities of different intensity are found in all areas, and they show spatial patterns that can only be observed by looking at the small scale: between neighbouring buildings or even dwellings. If we look beyond spatial and material characteristics, the lack of decent housing conditions, its scope and spatial distribution are related to other residential exclusion factors shaped by property, tenure and occupancy. Inadequate housing is closely tied to the lack of stable, affordable housing. This study highlights the need to address area-based interventions with a multifaceted and multi-scalar approach. These require coordinated polices that simultaneously address the improvement of residential spaces along with housing and social rights. Our conclusions confirm the significant role of spatial housing conditions along with socio-spatial and non-spatial aspects that must also be considered in any public interventions aimed at attaining a universal right to decent housing.

Quality

The Validation, Monitoring, Modification and Accreditation Framework (VSMA Framework) for official degrees ties the quality assurance processes (validation, monitoring, modification and accreditation) carried out over the lifetime of a course to two objectives—the goal of establishing coherent links between these processes, and that of achieving greater efficiency in their management—all with the overarching aim of improving programmes.
