The doctoral programme in Network Engineering has a long history. Its origins data back to a doctoral programme in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Telematics whose main characteristic was the combination of mathematical analysis with problem-solving in the area of telecommunications and particularly communication networks. Over time, the doctoral programme took shape until the two disciplines, telematics and applied mathematics, led to two separate programmes.
In the early years after the programme was created, a large group of professionals were trained who went on to join the telecommunications schools that were created in the 1990s. Universities such as Carlos III of Madrid and the universities of Cantabria or Cartagena employ doctoral degree holders who graduated from the doctoral programme in Network Engineering.
In a second stage, doctoral degree holders from the programme have become professionals working in South American universities such as the Pontifical Bolivarian University (UPB) of Colombia, or corporate research centres such as the NEC in Heidelberg, NTT DOCOMO EuroLabs in Munich or Spanish companies such as Indra. Some doctoral degree holders participate in innovative projects such as eNeo Labs.
Two aspects are notable in the doctoral programme in Network Engineering. From 2006 to 2011, the programme was shared with the Department of Telematic Engineering at the Universidad Carlos III and it received the Quality Award (MCD2003-00134) from 2003 to 2009. The programme is expected to receive this award again in the next call.
The doctoral programme is classified within the sector of information and communications technology (according to the ANEP, the area of computing sciences and information technology).
General information
Access profile
The doctoral programme is designed for students who have taken master’s degrees in telecommunications or computer science and wish to examine a topic or area in greater depth to contribute knowledge. Although we could say that this is the ideal starting point, it is not the only one. Students with other educational backgrounds could also be accepted, although they may need to take bridging courses.
The doctoral programme is designed for people with technological interests who are creative and want to advance the state-of-the-art in the subject. This activity requires an attitude to technology that goes beyond user knowledge to reach an understanding of technology itself, which the doctoral student will know how to improve as a result. Doctoral studies have two benefits. First, they meet personal needs to understand things, and second they train the person, providing them with methodology and knowledge that they can use in their professional activity in positions that require technological creativity.
Research and development departments in companies or the creation of emerging companies are places where this knowledge could be exploited to the maximum.
The natural route into the doctoral programme is via the various master’s degrees in Telecommunications Engineering at the UPC taught by the ETSETB and the EETAC, in which case bridging courses are not required. For students from other master’s programmes, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will analyse applicants’ academic record and the area in which they will develop their thesis. Based on this information, the committee will decide whether students need to take bridging courses up to a maximum of 30 credits. As a general rule, students who hold a master’s degree in telecommunications (or an equivalent qualification) from other Spanish or European universities can access the research phase directly. Students with a master’s degree in computer science may be asked to take a bridging course in the subject area of telecommunication networks. Students who come from other master’s degrees should take additional credits so that they can gain the knowledge they need rapidly. The range of topics and approaches used to carry out the research makes it difficult to establish specific admission requirements (some theses have a high mathematics content, others are more focused on application). However, in general, knowledge of tools that can be used for performance evaluation will be assessed. Hence, applicants must be able to handle mathematical models, numerical methods, simulation tools such as ns-3, OMNET, Matlab or have knowledge of programming in Java, C++, C or Python for the construction of prototypes. Knowledge of written and spoken English is essential, as this is the language that will be used in the doctoral degree, for training, generation of publications and reports, and the exchange of knowledge with other researchers.
Output profile
Doctoral candidates who complete a doctoral degree will have acquired the following competencies, which are needed to carry out quality research (Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January, which regulates official doctoral studies):
a) A systematic understanding of the field of study and a mastery of the research skills and methods related to the field.
b) An ability to conceive, design or create, put into practice and adopt a substantial process of research or creation.
c) An ability to contribute to pushing back the frontiers of knowledge through original research.
d) A capacity for critical analysis and an ability to assess and summarise new and complex ideas.
e) An ability to communicate with the academic and scientific community and with society in general as regards their fields of knowledge in the manner and languages that are typical of the international scientific community to which they belong.
f) An ability to foster scientific, technological, social, artistic and cultural progress in academic and professional contexts within a knowledge-based society.
The award of a doctoral degree must equip the graduate for work in a variety of settings, especially those requiring creativity and innovation. Doctoral graduates must have at least acquired the personal skills needed to:
a) Develop in contexts in which there is little specific information.
b) Find the key questions that must be answered to solve a complex problem.
c) Design, create, develop and undertake original, innovative projects in their field.
d) Work as part of a team and independently in an international or multidisciplinary context.
e) Integrate knowledge, deal with complexity and make judgements with limited information.
f) Offer criticism on and intellectually defend solutions.
Finally, with respect to competencies, doctoral students must:
a) have acquired advanced knowledge at the frontier of their discipline and demonstrated, in the context of internationally recognised scientific research, a deep, detailed and well-grounded understanding of theoretical and practical issues and scientific methodology in one or more research fields;
b) have made an original and significant contribution to scientific research in their field of expertise that has been recognised as such by the international scientific community;
c) have demonstrated that they are capable of designing a research project that serves as a framework for carrying out a critical analysis and assessment of imprecise situations, in which they are able to apply their contributions, expertise and working method to synthesise new and complex ideas that yield a deeper knowledge of the research context in which they work;
d) have developed sufficient autonomy to set up, manage and lead innovative research teams and projects and scientific collaborations (both national and international) within their subject area, in multidisciplinary contexts and, where appropriate, with a substantial element of knowledge transfer;
e) have demonstrated that they are able to carry out their research activity in a socially responsible manner and with scientific integrity;
f) have demonstrated, within their specific scientific context, that they are able to make cultural, social or technological advances and promote innovation in all areas within a knowledge-based society;
g) have demonstrated that they are able to participate in scientific discussions at the international level in their field of expertise and disseminate the results of their research activity to audiences of all kinds.

Duration of studies and dedication regime
Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, counted from the date of first enrolment in the relevant programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is seven years from the date of first enrolment in the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. To calculate these periods, the date of deposit is considered to be the date on which the thesis is made publicly available for review.
If a doctoral candidate has a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%, the maximum period of study is six years for full-time students and nine years for part-time students.
For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years.
When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the requirement to complete this minimum period of study.
Temporary disability leave and leave for the birth of a child, adoption or fostering for the purposes of adoption, temporary foster care, risk during pregnancy or infant feeding, gender violence and any other situation provided for in current regulations do not count towards these periods. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which must inform the Doctoral School.
Doctoral candidates may request periods of temporary withdrawal from the programme for up to a total of two years. Requests must be justified and addressed to the academic committee responsible for the programme, which will decide whether or not to grant the candidate's request.
Extension of studies
If a doctoral candidate has not applied to deposit their thesis before the expiry of the deadlines specified in the previous section, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may, at the request of the doctoral candidate, authorise an extension of this deadline of one year under the conditions specified for the doctoral programme in question.
Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:
- The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
- The doctoral candidate not having completed their annual enrolment or applied for a temporary interruption.
- The doctoral candidate not having formalised annual enrolment on the day after the end of the authorisation to temporarily interrupt or withdraw from the programme.
- The doctoral candidate receiving a negative reassessment after the deadline set by the academic committee of the doctoral programme to remedy the deficiencies that led to a previous negative assessment.
- The doctoral candidate having been the subject of disciplinary proceedings leading to their suspension or permanent exclusion from the UPC.
- A refusal to authorise the extensions applied for, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.3 of these regulations.
- The doctoral candidate not having submitted the research plan in the period established in Section 8.2 of these regulations.
- The maximum period of study for the doctoral degree having ended, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.4 of these regulations.
Dismissal from the programme means that the doctoral candidate cannot continue studying at the UPC and that their academic record will be closed. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission, and the committee must reevaluate the candidate in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.
A doctoral candidate who has been dismissed due to having exceeded the time limit for completing doctoral studies or due to an unsatisfactory assessment may not be Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Page 17 of 33 admitted to the same doctoral programme until at least two years have elapsed from the date of dismissal, as provided for in sections 3.4 and 9.2 of these regulations.

Access requirements
As a rule, applicants must hold a Spanish bachelor's degree or equivalent and a Spanish master's degree or equivalent, provided they have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits on the two degrees (Royal Decree 43/2015, of 2 February).
Applicants who meet one or more of the following conditions are also eligible for admission:
a) Holders of official Spanish degrees or equivalent Spanish qualifications, provided they have passed 300 ECTS credits in total and they can prove they have reached Level 3 in the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education.
b) Holders of degrees awarded in foreign education systems in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), which do not require homologation, who can prove that they have reached Level 7 in the European Qualifications Framework, provided the degree makes the holder eligible for admission to doctoral studies in the country in which it was awarded.
c) Holders of degrees awarded in a country that does not belong to the EHEA, which do not require homologation, on the condition that the University is able to verify that the degree is of a level equivalent to that of official university master's degrees in Spain and that it makes the holder eligible for admission to doctoral studies in the country in which it was awarded.
d) Holders of another doctoral degree.
e) Holders of an official university qualification who, having been awarded a post as a trainee in the entrance examination for specialised medical training, have successfully completed at least two years of training leading to an official degree in a health sciences specialisation.
Note 1: Regulations for access to doctoral studies for individuals with degrees in bachelor's, engineering, or architecture under the system prior to the implementation of the EHEA (CG 47/02 2014).

Legal framework
Admission criteria and merits assessment
Ultimately, admission to the doctoral programme will be regulated by the academic committee of the doctoral programme. As described in Section 8 of this document, this body is directed by the coordinator of the doctoral programme, assisted by a committee comprised of lecturers who participate in the programme who are put forward by the research groups. If the ex officio members of the committee consider it necessary, they may propose other lecturers who represent relevant research areas. The composition of the academic committee of the doctoral programme should be approved by the board of the Department.
The function of the academic committee is to ensure the quality of the doctoral programme by participating in the processes of admission, monitoring, evaluation and assessment. If there is no proposal of a thesis supervisor, the academic committee is responsible for assigning one. Based on the applicants’ thesis topic preferences, the member of the academic committee who is most closely associated with this area will propose a supervisor. If the person responsible for this area cannot meet the requirement, another area will be sought and the request will be repeated. If a supervisor cannot be found after consulting all members of the academic committee, the application cannot be accepted.
If a thesis supervisor is available, applicants are then assessed on the following aspects, with a score of 0 to 10 given for each one and the following weightings:
• Academic record and academic background (30%).
• Research experience (10%).
• Language knowledge (10%).
• Other relevant aspects described in the CV that are not considered in the three previous points (5%).
• Evaluation by the doctoral thesis supervisor (30%).
• Evaluation by the academic committee of the doctoral programme (15%).
Students will be accepted if they have a score of 7 points or over. In all cases, applicants will be notified of the decision, and will be given a report on the overall and partial evaluations. So that the decision is not personalised, the supervisor’s and academic committee director’s evaluations will be averaged, and this will be the score that is announced.
Along with admission, the academic committee will provide enrolment recommendations if bridging courses are required. The recommended credits (up to a maximum of 30) for bridging courses correspond to subjects in the area of telematics that can be taken in the shortest time possible.
Training complements
The academic committee for the programme may require that doctoral students pass specific bridging courses. In this case, it will monitor the bridging courses that are taken and establish suitable criteria to limit their duration.
The bridging courses will be on research training, but doctoral students will never be asked to enrol for a number equal to or above 60 ECTS. The academic regulations of doctoral studies state that bridging courses may also be cross-disciplinary. However, this point is likely to be amended so that bridging courses are only associated with research credits, particularly when an applicant enters the doctoral programme with a bachelor’s degree worth 300 ECTS.
Considering the doctoral student activity report (DAD), the academic committee of the programme could propose additional measures to those established in the regulations that lead to the withdrawal of doctoral students who do not meet the established criteria.
The natural route into the doctoral programme is via a master’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering at the UPC, in which case it is not necessary to complete bridging courses. For students from other master’s degree programmes, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will analyse the applicant’s academic record and decide the area in which they will prepare their thesis, as well as whether it is necessary to complete bridging courses, up to a maximum of 30 credits.
Currently, bridging courses are offered in the framework of master’s degrees in Telecommunications Engineering at the UPC taught by the ETSETB and the EETAC (https://eetac.upc.edu/en/study/masters-degrees/masteam, https://matt.masters.upc.edu/).

Procedure for the preparation and defense of the research plan
Doctoral candidates must submit a research plan, which will be included in their doctoral student activity report, before the end of the first year. The plan may be improved over the course of the doctoral degree. It must be endorsed by the tutor and the supervisor, and it must include the method that is to be followed and the aims of the research.
At least one of these annual assessments will include a public presentation and defence of the research plan and work done before a committee composed of three doctoral degree holders, which will be conducted in the manner determined by each academic committee. The examination committee awards a Pass or Fail mark. A Pass mark is a prerequisite for continuing on the doctoral programme. Doctoral candidates awarded a Fail mark must submit a new research plan for assessment by the academic committee of the doctoral programme within six months.
The committee assesses the research plan every year, in addition to all of the other activities in the doctoral student activity report. Doctoral candidates who are awarded two consecutive Fail marks for the research plan will be obliged to definitely withdraw from the programme.
If they change the subject of their thesis, they must submit a new research plan.

Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director
The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.
The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.
PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.
The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.
A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.
Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.
If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.
The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.
For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.
Permanence

Learning resources
All students who carry out their research on the doctoral programme in Network Engineering have a comfortable, suitable place to work in an office or laboratory shared with other students to promote a spirit of community. This fosters the free exchange of ideas and collaborative work. In this place, they have an individual area equipped with a desktop computer that has basic office software licences and other calculation or simulation tools installed through the UPC software repository. Students have access to all kinds of office material, a printing service, meeting rooms with projectors and video conference equipment, and other shared areas for more informal meetings that contain a fridge, microwave and coffee machine.
The Department’s management units (North Campus and Castelldefels Management and Support Units) support doctoral students in various ways. For example, they provide financial management of trips to participate in conferences or for international project meetings, and support in the defence process in the final phase of preparing the thesis.
In addition to the above, the various research lines developed in the department have specific resources that are summarised below:
Students associated with the research line Management, Pricing and Services in Next Generation Networks (MAPS, https://futur.upc.edu/176539) have access to the virtual laboratory EmanicsLab.
This laboratory is supported by a network constituted by a total of 20 nodes located in ten European universities. The MAPS groups contributes with two of these nodes. Doctoral students use the laboratory for their research activities in the field of network and service management, including systems for gathering and analysing traffic flows, monitoring and accounting systems, analysis of the stability of autonomous networks and mechanisms for resource allocation/management in virtual networks.
Doctoral students in network services research lines (SERTEL, https://futur.upc.edu/176527) can use a network drive space to create backups and several calculation servers optimised for the execution of various simulators. The SERTEL group also has a virtualisation environment made up of five high-performance servers that can be used to carry out studies on complex network infrastructure.
Students working on a doctoral thesis with the Design and Evaluation of Broadband Networks and Services (BAMPLA, https://futur.upc.edu/176385A) research group have access to various facilities for emulation and simulation (for example, OPNET), and spaces for conducting research with top-of-the-line network equipment. These spaces include the Networks and Services Laboratory, which has two private SDN/NFV clouds and slicing based on Openflow, OpenStack, ONFV and ONAP, EPON/GPON equipment, Metro Ethernet and gateways, EPON/WLAN, all connected to an SDN experimental network with continental output at 10 Gbps.
In addition to making various high-performance calculation servers available to doctoral students, the Wireless Networks Group (WNG, https://futur.upc.edu/176483) provides them with access to equipment for studying radio resource management, including spectrum analysers, oscilloscopes and high-precision power supplies for studying the energy consumption of small devices. The Group also has state-of-the-art equipment for research on wireless local area networks (WLANs) and personal area networks, including software licences and the hardware needed to provide development environments for different platforms of sensor networks. In this respect, the group has extensive fixed infrastructure, composed of dozens of nodes that can be managed remotely to configure a large number of experiments.
Teaching laboratories, equipped with network analysers, switches and routers, Wi-Fi access points and simulators of private cloud environments, can be used by doctoral students when they are not being used for bachelor’s degree and master’s degree classes.

Thesis abstract: 6G networks have emerged as a revolutionary breakthrough, promising ultra-fast and reliable connectivity that redefines the way we interact with the digital world. This new generation of networks not only drives communication between devices but is also the backbone of the Internet of Things. In addition, the learning and adaptive capabilities of Artificial Intelligence systems are driving process automation and efficiency. Similarly, Edge Computing complements this landscape by decentralizing data processing, bringing computing capacity closer to the sources of information. This allows for reducing latency and improving efficiency byprocessing data in real-time, driving critical applications that require instantaneous responses. This thesis focuses on two important points: 1) Improving the efficiency of applications in smart cities, and 2) Enhancing the efficiency of underwater communications in smart coastal cities by applying artificial intelligence, edge computing, and 5G and beyond. To achieve these objectives, an exhaustive study of the existing literature on 5G and beyond networks, smart cities, and artificial intelligence has been carried out. In addition, technical documentation to obtain an updated view of the different technologies that enable the development of applications based on 5G and beyond has been analyzed. Aiming to generate newand innovative alternatives in the field of tourism, security, improved underwater communications, and marine discovery that drive promote development to meet the needs of citizens in smart cities and ocean/sea. As a result of this study, the first contribution has emerged. It involves the analysis, design, and implementation of a tourist attraction recommendation system employing a deep learning algorithm tailored for smart cities. The primary objective is to improve how tourist attraction recommendations are made so that they are tailored to the requirements of each visitor in a given city and thereby reduce the time it may take a visitor to search for possible places to visit. The second contribution arises in surveillance and security, which consists of a distraction detection system for the prevention of drowning in aquatic places, developed in a 5G and beyond network environment. For this goal, an approach of surveillance cameras capturing images of people in charge of minors in swimming pools or beaches was proposed; and employing an ML algorithm (convolutional neural networks) to classify the type of distraction that a person in charge of a minor may have. Finally, the third contribution is presented, called reinforcement learning and mobile edge computing for 6G-based underwater wireless networks. In this approach, a submerged edge mobile computing architecture is presented in which an AUV is used as a mobile platform (MEC), in addition, several local AUVs equipped with computational resources that collect tasks from sensor nodes and can make the decision to process them locally or partially or fully offload them to the mobile edge computing AUV device. To this end, an algorithm based on deep reinforcement learning (DDPG) is proposed for trajectory control, task offloadingstrategy, and computational resource allocation, combined with mobile edge computing and AUVs to improve underwater communication; aiming to minimize the sum of maximum processing delays and energy consumption during the whole process of executing a task. The contributions presented in this doctoral thesis are of singular importance, since to date they continue to be innovative. The contributions presented not only represent significant advances in their respective areas but also lay the groundwork for future research and developments in smart city construction and underwater communications optimization, thereby reinforcing the transformative potential of artificial intelligence, edge computing, and advanced wireless networks in these domains.

Thesis abstract: The advent of the internet, marked by pivotal developments such as the launch of Arpanet and the standardization of HTTP, has irrevocably changed the fabric of modern society. Centralized platforms like Microsoft, Google, Apple, and Amazon have dominated this digital landscape, offering many services ranging from cloud computing to online storage. However, the centralized nature of these services has raised significant concerns regarding user privacy, data integrity, and the potential for censorship. In response to these issues, the open-source community has explored peer-to-peer alternatives, notably in the realm of distributed file systems, ledgers, and blockchain technology. Blockchains, popularized by the emergence of Bitcoin, promote a democratized service model that challenges the centralized status quo. Yet, they are not without their own challenges, including decentralization, security, privacy, and performance. This thesis delves into the nuances of blockchain technology, focusing on Ethereum's transition from Proof of Work (PoW) to Proof of Stake (PoS) and its implications on network hardware requirements, topology, and overall performance. The development of Ethereum serves as a small-scale reflection of the broader ambitions and challenges in transitioning to Decentralized Finance (DeFi) platforms. Despite significant theoretical advancements in consensus mechanisms and scalability solutions, real-world implementations and experimental validations remain sparse. This work aims to bridge this gap by comprehensively analysing Ethereum's PoS transition by examining the interlaced relationships between software logic, hardware configurations, and network dynamics. Through novel measurement models and tools, this thesis contributes to a deeper understanding of how Ethereum's architectural changes impact its ecosystem and its participants' behaviours.Lastly, the research presented in this thesis illustrates the technical and operational challenges facing Ethereum and similar blockchain platforms and proposes a series of contributions that advance the field. This work empirically analyses the future enhancements in blockchain technology by exploring the implications of the network and its topology, to the viability of decentralized validation processes, and the potential for scaling solutions like Data Availability Sampling. The open-source tools and methodologies developed within the thesis scope represent the commitment to transparency and collaboration, which follows the spirit of the decentralized communities it seeks to serve. Through a mix of theoretical exploration and empirical research, this thesis aims to provide a deeper and more detailed understanding of Ethereum PoS' design choices, its capabilities and the limitations this one represents in future steps and upgrades, leading the way for more resilient, scalable, and decentralized digital infrastructures.

Thesis abstract: Traditionally, individuals and organisations have relied on third parties, such as notaries, banks, and public entities, to verify or notarize information related to processes often lackingtransparency and subject to unequal power dynamics. Blockchain technology has emergedas a revolutionary tool with the potential to transform industries by providing decentralised, transparent, and traceable systems. Despite its promise, blockchain adoption remainslimited, particularly among individuals and small businesses unfamiliar with its complexities. This doctoral thesis seeks to bridge the gap between blockchain’s potential and its practicalapplications. Three key challenges are addressed to build enhanced decentralisedapplications: accessibility for end users, using blockchain to provide trust in data exchangesand enhancing scalability to promote the massive integration of blockchain in real worldapplications.Regarding the first line of research, we proposed an architecture to decrease entry barriersfor end users to distributed ledger technologies. In particular, we proposed mechanisms toenhance the user onboarding process and to simplify the key life-cycle management. Ourarchitecture uses a middleware that allows us to decouple the digital signatures required forpaying blockchain fees from the ones required for authorization. This approach has theadvantage that users are not forced to create wallets, buy cryptocurrency, or protect theirprivate keys.In the second line of research, we addressed the problem of distrust between data providersand data consumers. Data providers want to get paid for what they offer, while dataconsumers want to know exactly what they are paying for before actually paying for it. Ourcontribution is to propose a protocol that overcomes this obstacle by building trust based ontwo main ideas: first, a probabilistic verification protocol, where some random samples of thereal dataset are shown to buyers in order to allow them to make an assessment beforecommitting any payment; and second, a protected payment process enforced with smartcontracts on a public blockchain that guarantees the payment of data if and only if theprovided data meet the agreed terms, and that honest players are otherwise refunded. Finally, in the third and last line of research, we tackle the challenge of scaling blockchainnetworks. In particular, we explore how layer two solutions can be used to scale blockchainseffectively, focusing on the key metrics of performance such as throughput and delay. Ourproposal is based on zero knowledge proofs and in this context, we delve into advancedscaling techniques, such as horizontal scaling with proof aggregation and vertical scalingthrough optimised hardware. By addressing these challenges, the thesis aims to developsecure, scalable, and user-friendly blockchain solutions, encouraging wider adoption andhelping society move toward more equitable and decentralised systems.

Thesis abstract: The telecommunications industry faces rapid changes due to the deployment of ultra-high speed access networks (5G and beyond, fiber-to-the-home), promising unparalleled experiences with high bandwidth and low latency. However, this transition brings challenges. With the surge in smart device numbers and bandwidth demand, optimizing network architecture, management, and resource usage is crucial for cost-efficiency. Passive Optical Networks (PONs) offer efficient broadband access for residential and commercial sectors, with advantages like energy efficiency and robust security and high performance. Leading organizations, such as IEEE and ITU-T, are actively developing standards to increase the capabilities of next-generation PONs. The goal is to meet the demands by implementing innovative mechanisms for efficient management, resource allocation, QoS, energy savings, and low latency.Next-generation PONs have introduced the use of multiple wavelengths based on TWDM techniques. However, managing multiple wavelengths presents challenges, as DBA algorithms need to consider both the time and wavelength dimensions of the network. This follows a Joint Time and Wavelength Scheduling (JTWS) scheme, which requires complex implementation. TWDM-PON also utilizes tunable transceivers in ONUs to switch between wavelengths, but this introduces a delay called Laser Tuning Time (LTT) which is often ignored, but it is an important consideration when designing our DBA algorithms. Additionally, there is a demand to integrate metro and access networks for streamlined telecom infrastructure. Long Reach PON (LRPON) offers a solution by expanding coverage from 20 km to 100 km, enabling high-speed, long-distance data transmission over optical fibers. This reduces the need for central offices, resulting in cost savings. However, the extended reach of LRPONs introduces new challenges, particularly in the area of DBA algorithms. Traditional DBA algorithms like IPACT may not be as efficient for LRPONs due to increased propagation delays and round-trip times (RTT) between the OLT and ONUs. To address these challenges, a novel DBA algorithm called the Distance Weighted DBA (DWDBA) algorithm is proposed. This thesis delves into the limitations of traditional DBA algorithms and proposes novel Enhanced DBA solutions for PONs. Leveraging techniques such as the Longest Processing Time (LPT) scheduling method to minimize queue delays, our DBAs also consider the concept of laser tuning time to bring a practical, real-world approach to our system. The main contributions of this thesis are: - Incorporating the often-overlooked laser tuning time (LTT) concept in our analysis of DBA for TWDM PONs, therefore obtaining more realistic results. - Introducing an innovative algorithm for PONs employing LPT to minimize queue delay and enhance throughput, resulting in a notable reduction (up to 73%) with respect to the queue delay when compared to IPACT. - Developing a Distance Weighted DBA (DWDBA), specifically tailored for LRPONs, aimed at preventing the penalization of ONUs located farther from the OLT. This results in improving up to 30% and 10% the queue delay and throughput, respectively, over IPACT.The effectiveness of these proposed algorithms is rigorously evaluated through comprehensive simulations, demonstrating their potential to meet the demands of future networks.

Thesis abstract: The thesis has contributed to the research on network management for the provisioning of future services, which we refer to as the Future Service Deployment Problem (FSDP). In this thesis, different deployment techniques facing the FSDP are investigated to achieve solving the problem in a cost-effective and resource-efficient manner under different constraints while meeting the requirements of selected representative future applications, as a problem to be solved in a time frame appropriate for the particular working scenario considered. Depending on the operational behaviour and network and resource requirements, four representative applications have been identified and classified into two different categories: i) Forwarding Applications (FAs), such as some smart city applications, and ii) Closed Loop Applications (CLAs), such as Virtual Reality (VR) or Vehicle Collision Avoidance (VCA).The FSDP can generally be viewed as consisting of two interlinked sub-problems that should always be addressed in a coordinated manner in order to achieve adequate deployments. In particular, the two sub-problems are: i) Where to deploy a service; and ii) How to deploy the service. For the former, we mainly consider a given set of coordinated and cooperating resources that form the substrate network. The solution to the problem is to determine an optimal compute node or subset of compute nodes and the associated links between those nodes to allocate the various microservices of a service request. While the latter deals with the appropriate provisioning of microservices that takes into account the various key attributes arising from the network state and QoS requirements of the service requests, in a resource-efficient and cost-effective manner, to be executed in a reasonable time while meeting the associated constraints. In the following, a brief mentioning of the different chapters of the thesis is given according to the proposed technique and the considered working scenario for each of them: chapters 1 and 2 present the thesis objectives, the working scenarios, the state-of-the-art regarding the addressed problem, the description of considered application use cases, a mathematical formulation of the problem, and a summary of proposed techniques to solve it. In Chapter 3, an Optimization Deployment Algorithm (ODA) is presented to obtain near-optimal deployment solutions in a reasonable amount of time, a Multiaccess Edge Computing (MEC) working scenario is assumed, where different MEC State Features (MSFs) are used. Chapter 4introduces a deployment technique that uses a combination of heuristic and artificial intelligence (AI) to flexibly and optimally fulfil a wider range of requirements and to accommodate the various service requests on a shared network. Chapter 5 explores the use of a more complex working scenario: a hybrid edge-cloud system, where resources at the edge tier are geographically distributed. Moreover, an AI technique based on reinforcement learning (RL) is proposed. In addition, a new heuristic is proposed for the allocation of microservices within the edge network. Chapter 6 presents a metaheuristic algorithm, namely a customized Genetic Algorithm, tailored for the deployment of future microservice-based applications in a multi-tier network. Chapter 7 concludes the thesis with a summary of the main results, future work, and drawn conclusions.

Thesis abstract: The issue of data sharing and the protection of individual privacy is a significant challenge in modern society. The concept of privacy preserving data publishing addresses this problem by enabling the sharing of valuable sensitive data while protecting the legal right to privacy of the individuals who share it. Allowing access to this information is of great value for the proper development of research and various technologies without the burden of strict privacy regulations that private information implies. In this thesis, we have focused on the study of a particular data publishing framework: continuous data publishing, where data is published continuously while being updated between publications. The principal contributions of this thesis to the area of continuous data publishing are described next.Firstly, we have structured the existing corpus of literature. We have identified the principal categories of attackers and organised the existing proposals based on their attacker capacities, privacy guarantees and dataset type.Secondly, we examined the requirements for m-invariance, a state-of-the-art proposal, and how to achieve these requirements in an efficient manner. Existing techniques for generating private datasets necessitate the enforcement of the m-eligible condition, which restricts the distribution of sensitive data values within the dataset. We have investigated the significance of this property and the most efficient methods for handling datasets that do not fulfil m-eligibility, thereby minimizing the loss of utility.Thirdly, we have developed a computationally intensive approach to optimize the utility of publications. Existing algorithms based on the m-invariance notion are simple heuristics that do not prioritize the maximization of data quality but rather the velocity of execution. We have created an alternative approach that is devoted to optimizing data quality. The results demonstrate a substantial enhancement in utility relative to previous algorithms. Finally, we have proposed two novel privacy notions for continuous data publishing. The first is a,m-warden, a privacy notion that limits the capacity of a probabilistic attacker. This is an malicious observer that, knowing the user's data, can infer with a certain probability the sensitive information of the target. On the other hand, m-USP is a privacy notion designed to permit the republication of data between two non-communicating data publishers, while simultaneously preventing attacks derived from the non-coordinated publication of data.

Quality
The Validation, Monitoring, Modification and Accreditation Framework (VSMA Framework) for official degrees ties the quality assurance processes (validation, monitoring, modification and accreditation) carried out over the lifetime of a course to two objectives—the goal of establishing coherent links between these processes, and that of achieving greater efficiency in their management—all with the overarching aim of improving programmes.
