Statistics and Operations Research

The Department of Statistics and Operations Research at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) was created in 1987 as a result of the University Reform Law, which brought together various university groups that had previously been working separately in areas of statistics and operations research.

The Department has a staff of 40 professors who work between the School of Industrial Engineering of Barcelona (ETSEIB); the School of Industrial, Aerospace and Audio-visual Engineering of Terrassa (ESEIAAT); the Barcelona School of Informatics (FIB) and the School of Mathematics and Statistics (FME). The Department offers its own doctoral programme as well as master’s and postgraduate courses.

The Department is involved in a large number of research activities (mostly in the field of industrial engineering), the development of intelligent interfaces and automatic data processing systems, the optimisation and simulation of flows in networks and related applications.

Duration of studies and dedication regime

Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is three years, counted from the date of admission to the programme to the date of submission of the doctoral thesis. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is five years, counting from the date of admission to the programme to the date of submission of the doctoral thesis. For calculating these periods, the date of admission is considered to be the date of the first enrolment for tutorials, and the date of submission the moment in which the Doctoral School officially deposits the doctoral thesis.

For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years. When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the minimum period of study requirement.

The calculation of periods of study will not include periods of absence due to illness, pregnancy or any other reason provided for in the regulations in force. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which, where appropriate, must inform the Doctoral School. Doctoral candidates may also temporarily withdraw from the programme for up to one year, and this period may be extended for an additional year. Doctoral candidates who wish to interrupt their studies must submit a justified request to the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which will decide whether or not to approve the request. Each programme will establish conditions for readmission to doctoral studies.

Extension
If full-time doctoral candidates have not applied to deposit their thesis by the end of the three-year period of study, the academic committee of the programme may authorise an extension of up to one year. In exceptional circumstances, a further one-year extension may be granted, subject to the conditions established by the corresponding doctoral programme. In the case of part-time doctoral candidates, an extension of two years may be authorised. In both cases, in exceptional circumstances a further one-year extension may be granted by the Doctoral School's Standing Committee, upon the submission of a reasoned application by the academic committee of the doctoral programme.

Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:

  • The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
  • The maximum period of study and of extensions thereof ending.
  • The doctoral candidate not having enrolled every academic year (unless he or she has been authorised to temporarily withdraw).
  • The doctoral candidate failing two consecutive assessments.
  • The doctoral candidate having disciplinary proceedings filed against him or her that rule that he or she must be dismissed from the UPC.

Dismissal from the programme implies that doctoral candidates cannot continue studying at the UPC and the closing of their academic record. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission and the committee must reevaluate them in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.

Access profile

In general, any student coming from a numbers-related discipline or holding a master’s degree in Statistics and Operations Research (preferably from the UPC) who earned good (in the top quarter) grades may be admitted into this doctoral programme.

Specifically, it is recommended that applicants hold one of the following undergraduate degrees:
• Bachelor’s degree in Statistical Techniques and Sciences
• Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering
• Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering
• Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering
• Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering
• Bachelor’s degree in Biology
• Bachelor’s degree in Economics
• Bachelor’s degree in Sociology
• Bachelor’s degree in Medicine.

Students must be able to communicate in English, Catalan or Spanish.

Access requirements

Applicants must hold a Spanish bachelor’s degree or equivalent and a Spanish master’s degree or equivalent, provided they have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits on the two degrees (Royal Decree 43/2015, of 2 February)

In addition, the following may apply:

  • Holders of an official degree awarded by a university in Spain or any other country in the European Higher Education Area, pursuant to the provisions of Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, which establishes official university course regulations, who have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits on official university degrees, of which at least 60 must be at the master's degree level.
  • Holders of an official Spanish bachelor’s degree comprising at least 300 credits, as provided for by EU regulations. Holder of degrees of this kind must complete bridging courses unless the curriculum of the bachelor’s degree in question included research training credits equivalent in value to those which would be earned on a master's degree.
  • Holders of an official university qualification who, having passed the entrance examination for specialised medical training, have completed at least two years of a training course leading to an official degree in a health-sciences specialisation.
  • Holders of a degree issued under a foreign education system. In these cases, homologation is not required, but the UPC must verify that the degree certifies a level of training equivalent to an official Spanish master's degree and qualifies the holder for admission to doctoral studies in the country where it was issued. Admission on this basis does not imply homologation of the foreign degree or its recognition for any purpose other than admission to doctoral studies.
  • Holders of a Spanish doctoral qualification issued under previous university regulations.
  • Note 1: Doctoral studies entrance regulations for holders of an undergraduate degree awarded before the introduction of the EHEA (CG 47/02 2014)

Note 2: Governing Council Decision 64/2014, which approves the procedure and criteria for assessing the fulfilment of academic admission requirements for doctoral studies by holders of non-homologated foreign degrees (CG 25/03 2014)

Admission criteria and merits assessment

Students who have completed the UPC’s master’s degree programme in Statistics and Operations Research, having earned marks of at least 7 out of 10, will be accepted into the programme.

Students who have not participated in this specific master’s programme but have completed another one in statistics and/or operations research at another university at a similar level and who have an undergraduate degree in sciences or technology (such as a bachelors’ degrees Statistical Techniques and Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Biology, Economics or Medicine) will be evaluated on the following criteria (weights in parentheses):
• Academic transcript in undergraduate and mater’s programmes (60%).
• Level of undergraduate and/or master’s studies completed or the universities where they were completed (30%).
• Knowledge of one or more of the languages in which the doctoral programme is taught (English, Catalan or Spanish) (10%).

Students are required to have earned at least 70% of the maximum grade possible in both their undergraduate and master’s studies. Standard university rankings will be used to assess the university the applicant attended (for example, http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings). The Academic Committee may require these students to complete up to 60 credits of bridging courses (subjects from the master’s programme in Statistics and Operations Research).

Training complements

The academic committee for the programme may require that doctoral students pass specific bridging courses. In this case, the committee will monitor the bridging courses and set up appropriate criteria to limit their length.

The courses could involve training in research or transversal education, but in no case will candidates be required to enrol in 60 or more ECTS credits.

Depending on the doctoral student activity report, the programme’s Academic Committee may propose measures, in addition to those established by current regulations, that would disassociate candidates who do not meet the established requisites.

The bridging courses will be agreed upon by the programme’s Academic Committee and each student’s tutor/supervisor. The bridging courses will be made up of subjects from the master’s degree programme in Statistics and Operations Research offered by UPC.

Students who have completed the master’s degree programme in Statistics and Operations Research at the UPC will not have to take any bridging courses.

Students who have been admitted to the doctoral programme and who have completed a different master’s programme will, as a general rule, have to complete some bridging courses (a minimum of 30, usually, and up to a maximum of 60 credits).

Students who have been admitted to the doctoral programme with an “Operations Research” background, will, if they have not acquired the knowledge in their previous master’s studies, have to take general common foundational courses and those covering the foundations of operations research from the master’s degree programme in statistics and operations research: Simulation, Modelling in Mathematical Programming, Optimisation, Stochastic Optimisation, Integer Programming and Combinatorial Optimisation, Large Scale Optimisation, Heuristic Methods in Mathematical Programming, Network Flows.

Students who have been admitted to the programme and who have a background in “Statistics” will have to take, if they have not previously acquired such knowledge in their previous master’s studies, the following common foundational and fundamental statistical courses from the master’s degree programme in Statistics and Operations Research: Probability and Stochastic Processes, Multivariate Analysis, Inference, Generalised Linear Models, Design of Experiments, Bayesian Inference, Survival Analysis, Forecasting and Time Series, Discrete Data Analysis, Longitudinal Data Analysis, Non-Parametric Models, Sampling Techniques.

Enrolment period for new doctoral students

Students enrolling in the doctoral programme for the first time must do so by the deadline specified in the admission decision.
Unless otherwise expressly indicated, enrolments corresponding to admission decisions issued from the second half of April on must be completed within the ordinary enrolment period for the current academic year.

Monitoring and evaluation of the doctoral student

Procedure for the preparation and defense of the research plan

Doctoral candidates must submit a research plan, which will be included in their doctoral student activity report, before the end of the first year. The plan may be improved over the course of the doctoral degree. It must be endorsed by the tutor and the supervisor, and it must include the method that is to be followed and the aims of the research.

At least one of these annual assessments will include a public presentation and defence of the research plan and work done before a committee composed of three doctoral degree holders, which will be conducted in the manner determined by each academic committee. The examination committee awards a Pass or Fail mark. A Pass mark is a prerequisite for continuing on the doctoral programme. Doctoral candidates awarded a Fail mark must submit a new research plan for assessment by the academic committee of the doctoral programme within six months.

The committee assesses the research plan every year, in addition to all of the other activities in the doctoral student activity report. Doctoral candidates who are awarded two consecutive Fail marks for the research plan will be obliged to definitely withdraw from the programme.

If they change the subject of their thesis, they must submit a new research plan.

Formation activities

The following educational activities make up the doctoral programme in statistics and operations research:

  • Tutorial. This involves tutors following-up with students via weekly meetings lasting around two hours. These meetings are mandatory and without them, the doctoral thesis cannot progress.
  • Master’s courses and Summer School. These are aimed to supplement candidates’ education if they have not completed the master’s degree programme in Statistics and Operations Research at the UPC. This includes advanced courses taught by visiting professors under the framework of the Summer School for the University’s master’s degree programme in Statistics and Operations Research (School of Mathematics and Statistics). The number of hours could reach those required to complete 60 credits (varying based on students’ backgrounds). In general, they include optional activities, though the Academic Committee or thesis supervisors could require that some of the courses be taken depending on the student’s background.
  • Seminars. Candidates will be required to regularly attend the Statistics and Operations Research Department’s seminars so that they may network with renowned researchers on both the national and international level and in order to expose themselves to cutting-edge research problems. Seminars typically last one hour, and the Department organises at least eight of them per year. Attending the seminars is optional.
  • Research stays. Doctoral candidates will be able to participate in research stays at other national or foreign research centres in order to educate themselves in specific areas or to carry out research work in order to be awarded the International Doctorate mention. Research stays tend to require a minimum stay of three months and are often optional, but they are required for students who wish to be awarded the International Doctorate mention.
  • Attending conferences. Candidates will be able to attend national and international conferences both to give their own presentations and to network with other researchers. International conferences often schedule intensive courses on topics that are of specific interest to doctoral candidates.
  • External courses. The Academic Committee communicates to candidates information regarding these intensive courses that are on specific topics that could be of interest to those in the degree programme. For example, the committee reports information on the courses offered by the Barcelona Graduate School of Mathematics (BSGMath). In general, they are optional courses that last for one week
  • UPC courses. The Academic Committee will inform doctoral candidates about courses of interest to scientific research, such as those organised by the UPC libraries (bibliographic research; training in information skills; learning to identify when and why information is needed; where to find information and how to assess it, use it and communicate it ethically) and the Institute of Education Sciences (improving language and communication skills; and acquiring the set of knowledge, abilities and attitudes needed to interpret and produce messages and communicate effectively in various contexts). In general, these are one- or two-day optional courses.

Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director

The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.

The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.

PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.

The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.

A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.

Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.

If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.

The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.

For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.

More information at the PhD theses section

Permanence

The academic committee of the programme may authorise an extension of up to one year for full-time doctoral candidates who have not applied to deposit their thesis by the end of the three-year period of study, in the terms outlined in the Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. In the case of part-time candidates, an extension of two years may be authorised. In both cases, in exceptional circumstances a further one-year extension may be granted by the Doctoral School's Standing Committee, upon the submission of a reasoned application by the academic committee of the doctoral programme.

International Mention

The doctoral degree certificate may include International Doctorate mention. In this case, the doctoral candidate must meet the following requirements:

a) During the period of study leading to the award of the doctoral degree, the doctoral candidate must have spent at least three months at a respected higher education institution or research centre outside Spain to complete courses or do research work. The stays and activities carried out must be endorsed by the thesis supervisor and authorised by the academic committee of the programme. The candidate must provide a certifying document issued by the person responsible for the research group of the body or bodies where the stay or activity was completed. This information will be added to the doctoral student’s activity report.
b) Part of the thesis (at least the summary and conclusions) must be written and presented in one of the languages commonly used for science communication in the relevant field of knowledge, which must not be an official language of Spain. This rule does not apply to stays and reports in Spanish or to experts from Spanish-speaking countries.
c) At least two PhD-holding experts belonging to a higher education institution or research centre outside Spain must have issued officially certified reports on the thesis.
d) The thesis examination committee must have included at least one PhD-holding expert from a higher education or research institution outside Spain who was not responsible for the candidate’s stay abroad (point a) above).
e) The thesis defence must have taken place on UPC premises or, in the case of joint programmes, at the location specified in the collaboration agreement.

Learning resources

The doctoral programme was given the Quality Award MCD2003-00128 from 2003 to 2009. In 2011 it was given the Excellence Award MEE2011-0384, which was renewed in 2012 and 2013. This gives the programme access to calls for mobility aid for professors (visiting professors who give classes in the programme), for thesis panels recognised across Europe and for students to achieve the European mention. In the recent 2011 call for mobility, this doctoral programme was awarded all of the aid that it requested: 3 for foreign professors to take part on panels for the European mention, 2 for visiting professors to teach classes in the programme’s Summer School and 3 for students to perform stays and earn the European mention. When the budget has allowed, the programme has also offered travel packages to help with the travel costs of attending conferences and completing stays. In 2011 a call was held and it ended up benefiting ten candidates in the programme.

Thesis abstract: Searching to achieve an ambitious reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, the European Union has set as a goal a modal shift in freight transport of 30\% by rail or waterborne for the near future. The increasing efforts of many governments to intensify rail freight transport often must face the difficulties involved in improving both infrastructure and rail operations. Moreover, infrastructure management and business operations usually correspond to different entities with highly contradictory economic interests.Making progress on the reliability of the railway network is one of the main factors to be considered to make the use of the train more attractive as a means of transport for industry. Also, focusing on shippers' response to road and rail competition and the role of different rail undertakings competing with each other may help boost the use of rail for freight transport. Seeking to reinforce these two goals, this thesis introduces two independent mathematical optimisation models, which may also be complementary, and which have been developed under a common conceptual framework of data structures and variables to guarantee their compatibility. The first model is a mathematical programming-based design model for evaluating the impact on a mixed railway network from proposals for infrastructure improvement and capacity expansion that are oriented mainly toward increasing freight transportation. The model has been applied to extend elements of an existing mixed railway network, perform relatively less costly actions on the network, and enhance capacity by adding new blocking/control systems at specific locations. These aspects are usually not considered in models for regional planning. Rather than a model whose sole focus is on railway capacity expansion, this approach combines capacity-expansion with network design. Because the way investments generate returns to the freight transportation system is of utmost relevance for these types of problems, this model is based on the efficient frontier between investment and operating costs. The second model is a combined model for jointly evaluating the modal split road-rail, and the resulting railway freight flows on the railway network. This combined modal split-traffic assignment model is addressed to the case when a modal split based on a random utility model is available, and some of its coefficients may present a non-negligible variability. To this end, after the initial deterministic formulation, a robust counterpart of the model is developed. The model, formulated as a non-linear integer programming problem, is oriented to a multi-carrier environment and includes constraints to consider the interactions between the different types of flows on the railway network, allowing a detailed evaluation of the cost types of the carriers and the network capacity. An algorithmic solution based on the outer approximation method is shown to provide accurate solutions in a reasonable computational time for the robust and non-robust versions of the model. Examples centred on a section of the Trans-European Transport Network, the TEN-T Core network corridors, are reported to test the applicability of the models. Results show the effectiveness of both models. The design model can be a helpful tool for analysing the impact infrastructure investments may have on operating costs, where (implicit) capacity limitations in the scenarios to be evaluated may necessarily be taken into account. At the same time, it can be complemented with the combined modal split-traffic assignment model by assessing the possible shippers' response to the different railway carriers' services competing with each other and the road.

Thesis abstract: The work presented in this dissertation is a compendium of articles based on three main applications of advanced statistical methodologies on real-world complex datasets. The first application concerns wildfire effects and is divided into two sections. For the first section, we know that the effects of wildfires are heterogeneous. Yet, which areas are more affected by these events remains unclear. Here we present a novel application of the Generalized Synthetic Control (GSC) method that enables the quantification and prediction of vegetation changes due to wildfires through a time-series analysis of in situ and satellite remote sensing data. We apply this method to a span of medium to large wildfires (> 1000 acres) in California throughout a time-span of two decades (1996¿2016). The capacity of this method for estimating counterfactual vegetation characteristics for burned regions is explored, and abrupt system changes are quantified. We find that the GSC method is better at predicting vegetation changes than the more traditional approach of using nearby regions to assess wildfire impacts. With regard to the second section of this first application, we aim to explain the dynamics of wildfire effects on a vegetation index (previously estimated by causal inference through synthetic controls) from available pre-wildfire information (mainly proceeding from satellites). For this purpose, we use regression models from Functional Data Analysis, where wildfire effects are considered functional responses, depending on the elapsed time after each wildfire, with pre-wildfire data acting as scalar covariates. Our main findings show that vegetation recovery after wildfires is a slow process, affected by many pre-wildfire conditions, among which the richness and diversity of vegetation are some of the best predictors. For the second application in this dissertation, we use count data on the arrivals at the Camp Nou stadium, owned and managed by Futbol Club Barcelona (FCB). FCB operates the largest stadium in Europe (with a seating capacity of almost one hundred thousand people) and hosts recurring sports events. The attendance to these is influenced by multiple conditions and have a palpable effect on city dynamics -- e.g., peak demand for related services like public transport and stores. We study fine grain audience entrances at the stadium, segregated by gate and visitor type, in order to gain insights and predict the arrival behavior of future games. We can forecast the timeline of arrivals at gate level 72 hours prior to kickoff, facilitating operational and organizational decision-making by anticipating potential agglomerations and audience behavior, and identify patterns for different types of visitors and understand how relevant factors affect their turnout.Lastly, the third application explores the ways in which mobile phone, census, and volunteered geographical data can be used to measure geographic variations in the relationship between origin-destination flows and local urban accessibility in Barcelona. By means of a Negative Binomial Geographically Weighted Regression model we show that, globally, people tend to visit neighborhoods with better access to education facilities and retail. Locally, these and other features differ in sign and magnitude throughout the different city neighborhoods in ways that are not explained by administrative boundaries, providing deeper insights regarding urban characteristics such as rental prices. In conclusion, our work suggests that the qualities of a 15-minute city can be measured at scale, delivering actionable insights on the polycentric structure of cities, and the way people use and access this structure. All in all, the work presented in this thesis is a combination of statistics, applied statistics, data science, econometrics and economics, showing distinct ways and applications in which the temporal and spatial dimension can be treated and used to answer relevant research questions

Quality

The Validation, Monitoring, Modification and Accreditation Framework (VSMA Framework) for official degrees ties the quality assurance processes (validation, monitoring, modification and accreditation) carried out over the lifetime of a course to two objectives—the goal of establishing coherent links between these processes, and that of achieving greater efficiency in their management—all with the overarching aim of improving programmes.
