The doctoral programme in Computing was designed to adapt the doctoral programme in Software, created in 1985, to EHEA requirements. The new framework that emerged with the introduction of the Bologna guidelines necessitated the adaptation of postgraduate courses. As a result, in 2005, an integrated master's-doctoral programme was designed to provide rigorous, competitive training for students wishing to undertake research on topics in the areas of computing covered by the programme. The current programme is the result of a process of adaptation to Royal Decree 99/2011, the reconfiguration of UPC master's degrees in the area of information technology, and the restructuring of the Department of Computer Science. In accordance with Royal Decree 99/2011, which regulates official doctoral studies, the programme was validated by the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency (AQU Catalunya) in October 2012. The doctoral programme in Computing covers research topics in a set of disciplines related to computing: programming, algorithmics, big data, bioinformatics, visualisation and virtual reality. These topics build on studies for the bachelor’s degree in Informatics Engineering, specialisation in Computing; the bachelor's degree in Mathematics, specialisation in Discrete Mathematics and Algorithmics; the new bachelor's degree in Data Science and Engineering, and other related degrees. The topics that the programme focuses on are covered in two related master’s degrees in which the department has teaching responsibilities—the master’s degree in Innovation and Research in Informatics (MIRI) and the master’s degree in Advanced Mathematics and Mathematical Engineering (MAMME)—and in other related degrees. These areas are also linked to the activity of companies in the IT sector and research topics of interest at the international level.

The need for the course is also evident in the high level of participation of research groups involved in the programme in competitively funded research projects (most with European or national funding), the number of new students the programme attracts each year, and the number of graduates who find employment in industry and at universities and other research institutions.
Graduates are employed at research institutes (including the Alan Turing Institute) and universities abroad. Others have set up companies (e.g. Nelio Software) or hold positions at leading companies in the sector (including Google and Amazon). These results demonstrate that graduates are highly employable.

In order to focus scientific and methodological skills on specific topics, the programme is structured around the core areas that the research groups involved work on. This approach links research to internationally renowned research groups, which makes it possible to maintain the programme’s research areas within the main lines of research over the years. In addition to technical support, each research group offers courses at the master’s level and research seminars. The training programme also includes activities focusing on complementary skills, offered by the UPC Doctoral School. Two related master’s degrees qualify applicants for admission to the doctoral programme in Computing: the master’s degree in Innovation and Research in Informatics, with specialisation in Advanced Computing, Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality, or in Data Science; and the master’s degree in Advanced Mathematics and Mathematical Engineering, with specialisation in Discrete Mathematics and Algorithmics.

The doctoral programme in Computing has provided critical support for much of the research conducted in the Department of Computer Science (CS), formerly known as the Department of Software (LSI). The programme has attracted students from Catalonia and around the world. The positive response from students, the programme’s international dimension, and the quality of doctoral theses produced has allowed the programme to earn and maintain a Ministry of Education quality award (from 2003 on) and then a Pathway to Excellence award (which replaced the quality award) until its expiry in 2013 (MEE2011-0425).

The academic staff for the programme have a proven track record in international research. The five research groups involved in the programme have been recognised as consolidated research groups by the Government of Catalonia, and two of them also obtained financial support in the 2017 call for funding. Two professors on the programme have received the García Santesmases Prize for lifetime achievement, one of the national prizes awarded by the Computer Science Society of Spain (SCIE).

Access profile

Entry routes are described based on the background required for teaching staff on the master's degrees that prepare students to undertake research within the framework of the groups participating in the programme.

  1. Algorithmics and Programming. In this case, there are two informatics-focused entry routes: the master’s degree in Innovation and Research in Informatics (MIRI), with specialisation in Advanced Mathematics; and the master’s degree in Advanced Mathematics and Mathematical Engineering (MAMME), with specialisation in Discrete Mathematics and Algorithmics. These entry routes are linked to the research areas of the ALBCOM and LOGPROG research groups.
  2. Visualisation and Virtual RealityGraduates of the MIRI master’s degree with specialisation in Computer Graphics and Visualisation have the background required to undertake research in this field. This entry route is linked to the research areas of the GIE and ViRViG research groups.
  3. Data Science. Graduates of the MIRI master’s degree with specialisation in Data Science have the background required to undertake research in this field. This entry route is linked to the research areas of the ALBCOM and LARCA research groups.
Other master’s degrees in scientific and technological fields that prepare students to undertake research in areas covered by the doctoral programme may also be deemed suitable entrance qualifications. Students with such qualifications must demonstrate that they have a basic knowledge of core and compulsory subjects (both common subjects and those specific to the relevant UPC master’s degree and area of specialisation), or that they can acquire this knowledge by taking bridging courses (subjects of the UPC master’s degrees specified above).

Output profile

Doctoral candidates who complete a doctoral degree will have acquired the following competencies, which are needed to carry out quality research (Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January, which regulates official doctoral studies):

a) A systematic understanding of the field of study and a mastery of the research skills and methods related to the field.
b) An ability to conceive, design or create, put into practice and adopt a substantial process of research or creation.
c) An ability to contribute to pushing back the frontiers of knowledge through original research.
d) A capacity for critical analysis and an ability to assess and summarise new and complex ideas.
e) An ability to communicate with the academic and scientific community and with society in general as regards their fields of knowledge in the manner and languages that are typical of the international scientific community to which they belong.
f) An ability to foster scientific, technological, social, artistic and cultural progress in academic and professional contexts within a knowledge-based society.

The award of a doctoral degree must equip the graduate for work in a variety of settings, especially those requiring creativity and innovation. Doctoral graduates must have at least acquired the personal skills needed to:

a) Develop in contexts in which there is little specific information.
b) Find the key questions that must be answered to solve a complex problem.
c) Design, create, develop and undertake original, innovative projects in their field.
d) Work as part of a team and independently in an international or multidisciplinary context.
e) Integrate knowledge, deal with complexity and make judgements with limited information.
f) Offer criticism on and intellectually defend solutions.

Finally, with respect to competencies, doctoral students must:
a) have acquired advanced knowledge at the frontier of their discipline and demonstrated, in the context of internationally recognised scientific research, a deep, detailed and well-grounded understanding of theoretical and practical issues and scientific methodology in one or more research fields;
b) have made an original and significant contribution to scientific research in their field of expertise that has been recognised as such by the international scientific community;
c) have demonstrated that they are capable of designing a research project that serves as a framework for carrying out a critical analysis and assessment of imprecise situations, in which they are able to apply their contributions, expertise and working method to synthesise new and complex ideas that yield a deeper knowledge of the research context in which they work;
d) have developed sufficient autonomy to set up, manage and lead innovative research teams and projects and scientific collaborations (both national and international) within their subject area, in multidisciplinary contexts and, where appropriate, with a substantial element of knowledge transfer;
e) have demonstrated that they are able to carry out their research activity in a socially responsible manner and with scientific integrity;
f) have demonstrated, within their specific scientific context, that they are able to make cultural, social or technological advances and promote innovation in all areas within a knowledge-based society;
g) have demonstrated that they are able to participate in scientific discussions at the international level in their field of expertise and disseminate the results of their research activity to audiences of all kinds.

Duration of studies and dedication regime

Duration
The maximum period of study for full-time doctoral studies is four years, counted from the date of first enrolment in the relevant programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. The academic committee of the doctoral programme may authorise a doctoral candidate to pursue doctoral studies on a part-time basis. In this case, the maximum period of study is seven years from the date of first enrolment in the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited. To calculate these periods, the date of deposit is considered to be the date on which the thesis is made publicly available for review.

If a doctoral candidate has a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%, the maximum period of study is six years for full-time students and nine years for part-time students.

For full-time doctoral candidates, the minimum period of study is two years, counted from the date of an applicant's admission to the programme until the date on which the doctoral thesis is deposited; for part-time doctoral candidates it is four years.

When there are justified grounds for doing so, and the thesis supervisor and academic tutor have given their authorisation, doctoral candidates may request that the academic committee of their doctoral programme exempt them from the requirement to complete this minimum period of study.

Temporary disability leave and leave for the birth of a child, adoption or fostering for the purposes of adoption, temporary foster care, risk during pregnancy or infant feeding, gender violence and any other situation provided for in current regulations do not count towards these periods. Students who find themselves in any of these circumstances must notify the academic committee of the doctoral programme, which must inform the Doctoral School.

Doctoral candidates may request periods of temporary withdrawal from the programme for up to a total of two years. Requests must be justified and addressed to the academic committee responsible for the programme, which will decide whether or not to grant the candidate's request.

Extension of studies
If a doctoral candidate has not applied to deposit their thesis before the expiry of the deadlines specified in the previous section, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may, at the request of the doctoral candidate, authorise an extension of this deadline of one year under the conditions specified for the doctoral programme in question.

Dismissal from the doctoral programme
A doctoral candidate may be dismissed from a doctoral programme for the following reasons:

  • The doctoral candidate submitting a justified application to withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate not having completed their annual enrolment or applied for a temporary interruption.
  • The doctoral candidate not having formalised annual enrolment on the day after the end of the authorisation to temporarily interrupt or withdraw from the programme.
  • The doctoral candidate receiving a negative reassessment after the deadline set by the academic committee of the doctoral programme to remedy the deficiencies that led to a previous negative assessment.
  • The doctoral candidate having been the subject of disciplinary proceedings leading to their suspension or permanent exclusion from the UPC.
  • A refusal to authorise the extensions applied for, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.3 of these regulations.
  • The doctoral candidate not having submitted the research plan in the period established in Section 8.2 of these regulations.
  • The maximum period of study for the doctoral degree having ended, in accordance with the provisions of Section 3.4 of these regulations.

Dismissal from the programme means that the doctoral candidate cannot continue studying at the UPC and that their academic record will be closed. This notwithstanding, they may apply to the academic committee of the programme for readmission, and the committee must reevaluate the candidate in accordance with the criteria established in the regulations.

A doctoral candidate who has been dismissed due to having exceeded the time limit for completing doctoral studies or due to an unsatisfactory assessment may not be Academic Regulations for Doctoral Studies Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Page 17 of 33 admitted to the same doctoral programme until at least two years have elapsed from the date of dismissal, as provided for in sections 3.4 and 9.2 of these regulations.

Access requirements

As a rule, applicants must hold a Spanish bachelor's degree or equivalent and a Spanish master's degree or equivalent, provided they have completed a minimum of 300 ECTS credits on the two degrees (Royal Decree 43/2015, of 2 February).

Applicants who meet one or more of the following conditions are also eligible for admission:

a) Holders of official Spanish degrees or equivalent Spanish qualifications, provided they have passed 300 ECTS credits in total and they can prove they have reached Level 3 in the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education.
b) Holders of degrees awarded in foreign education systems in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), which do not require homologation, who can prove that they have reached Level 7 in the European Qualifications Framework, provided the degree makes the holder eligible for admission to doctoral studies in the country in which it was awarded.
c) Holders of degrees awarded in a country that does not belong to the EHEA, which do not require homologation, on the condition that the University is able to verify that the degree is of a level equivalent to that of official university master's degrees in Spain and that it makes the holder eligible for admission to doctoral studies in the country in which it was awarded.
d) Holders of another doctoral degree.
e) Holders of an official university qualification who, having been awarded a post as a trainee in the entrance examination for specialised medical training, have successfully completed at least two years of training leading to an official degree in a health sciences specialisation.

Note 1: Regulations for access to doctoral studies for individuals with degrees in bachelor's, engineering, or architecture under the system prior to the implementation of the EHEA (CG 47/02 2014).

Admission criteria and merits assessment

Criterion: An academic and research background that enables the applicant to undertake research within the areas covered by the research groups involved in the programme

Applicants who meet this requirement will be assessed based on the following weighted criteria:
• Academic record for all university degrees completed (up to 10 points)
• Publications in journals or conference proceedings (up to 4 points)
• Research experience (up to 2 points)
• Curriculum vitae (2 points)
• Fit between the research area of interest and those of the programme, and with the applicant’s background and training (up to 6 points)
• Other merits (up to 1 point)

Interviews, proposed research projects and letters of recommendation may be used as sources of additional information in the admission process.

Students admitted to the doctoral programme must be able to understand technical texts in English and follow courses and conferences conducted in English without difficulty. Doctoral students will be required to demonstrate a level of competence in English equivalent to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (in both oral and written comprehension) in the form and within the time limit determined by the academic committee.

Training complements

If there are any core or compulsory subjects that an applicant has not taken (either common or specific to the UPC master’s degree related to the selected research area), the academic committee of the doctoral programme may require that the student complete bridging courses.

These bridging courses will be subjects of the UPC master's degrees indicated above (or others) that provide the knowledge and skills needed to fill the gaps identified in the student’s academic training (up to a maximum 60 ECTS credits).

Enrolment period for new doctoral students

Students enrolling in the doctoral programme for the first time must do so by the deadline specified in the admission decision.

Unless otherwise expressly indicated, enrolments corresponding to admission decisions issued from the second half of April on must be completed within the ordinary enrolment period for the current academic year.

Monitoring and evaluation of the doctoral student

Procedure for the preparation and defense of the research plan

Doctoral candidates must submit a research plan, which will be included in their doctoral student activity report, before the end of the first year. The plan may be improved over the course of the doctoral degree. It must be endorsed by the tutor and the supervisor, and it must include the method that is to be followed and the aims of the research.

At least one of these annual assessments will include a public presentation and defence of the research plan and work done before a committee composed of three doctoral degree holders, which will be conducted in the manner determined by each academic committee. The examination committee awards a Pass or Fail mark. A Pass mark is a prerequisite for continuing on the doctoral programme. Doctoral candidates awarded a Fail mark must submit a new research plan for assessment by the academic committee of the doctoral programme within six months.

The committee assesses the research plan every year, in addition to all of the other activities in the doctoral student activity report. Doctoral candidates who are awarded two consecutive Fail marks for the research plan will be obliged to definitely withdraw from the programme.

If they change the subject of their thesis, they must submit a new research plan.

Procedure for assignment of tutor and thesis director

The academic committee of the doctoral programme assigns a thesis supervisor to each doctoral candidate when they are admitted or enrol for the first time, taking account of the thesis supervision commitment referred to in the admission decision.

The thesis supervisor will ensure that training activities carried out by the doctoral candidate are coherent and suitable, and that the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis will have an impact and make a novel contribution to knowledge in the relevant field. The thesis supervisor will also guide the doctoral candidate in planning the thesis and, if necessary, tailoring it to any other projects or activities undertaken. The thesis supervisor will generally be a UPC professor or researcher who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience. This includes PhD-holding staff at associated schools (as determined by the Governing Council) and UPC-affiliated research institutes (in accordance with corresponding collaboration and affiliation agreements). When thesis supervisors are UPC staff members, they also act as the doctoral candidate’s tutor.

PhD holders who do not meet these criteria (as a result of their contractual relationship or the nature of the institution to which they are attached) must be approved by the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee in order to participate in a doctoral programme as researchers with documented research experience.

The academic committee of the doctoral programme may approve the appointment of a PhD-holding expert who is not a UPC staff member as a candidate’s thesis supervisor. In such cases, the prior authorisation of the UPC Doctoral School's Standing Committee is required. A UPC staff member who holds a doctoral degree and has documented research experience must also be proposed to act as a co-supervisor, or as the doctoral candidate’s tutor if one has not been assigned.

A thesis supervisor may step down from this role if there are justified reasons (recognised as valid by the committee) for doing so. If this occurs, the academic committee of the doctoral programme will assign the doctoral candidate a new thesis supervisor.

Provided there are justified reasons for doing so, and after hearing any relevant input from the doctoral candidate, the academic committee of the doctoral programme may assign a new thesis supervisor at any time during the period of doctoral study.

If there are academic reasons for doing so (an interdisciplinary topic, joint or international programmes, etc.) and the academic committee of the programme gives its approval, an additional thesis supervisor may be assigned. Supervisors and co-supervisors have the same responsibilities and academic recognition.

The maximum number of supervisors of a doctoral thesis is two: a supervisor and a co-supervisor.

For theses carried out under a cotutelle agreement or as part of an Industrial Doctorate, if necessary and if the agreement foresees it this maximum number of supervisors may not apply. This notwithstanding, the maximum number of supervisors belonging to the UPC is two.

    Thesis abstract: A successful approach to represent the syntactic structure of sentences in Computational Linguistics, founded in the theory developed by Tesnière, is that of syntactic dependency tree. Pairs of vertices of syntactically-related words are joined with an edge that carries a label which indicates the type of syntactic relationship. When words and syntactic relationships are abstracted away, by removing the vertex labels and removing the edge labels with the type of syntactic relationship, we are left with a so-called linearized tree. A linearized tree is simply a rooted tree in conjunction with a linear arrangement. And a linear arrangement of a graph is a permutation of the graph's vertices, and can be represented by drawing the vertices on a horizontal line and the edges as semicircles above it.There exist many computational problems that involve linear arrangements of graphs. Remarkable examples are those that look for an arrangement that optimize the sum of edge lengths, where the length of an edge is defined as the absolute value of the difference of the positions of the endpoints of the edge in the arrangement. The problem that minimizes this sum is known as the minimum Linear Arrangement problem (minLA). When one maximizes the sum of edge lengths, the problem is known as the Maximum Linear Arrangement problem (MaxLA). In an attempt to provide a theory of word order, language researchers put forward the now well-known Dependency Distance minimization principle after observing and providing large-scale evidence of the tendency in languages to minimize the total sum of edge lengths in the syntactic dependency trees of their sentences. In order to provide an exhaustive theory of word order, some language researchers have also argued that MaxLA manifests itself in languages in substructures of the syntactic dependency trees isomorphic to a star graph.Both minLA and MaxLA are known to be NP-Hard on general graphs, and only minLA is known to be solvable in polynomial time on trees and other classes of graphs. In this thesis we contribute with optimal algorithms to solve several constrained variants of both minLA and MaxLA. We study these two problems for bipartite graphs under the constraint that vertices have to be arranged in two disjoint intervals according to the vertex partition they belong (bipartite arrangements). These are also studied for free trees under the constraint that edges are not allowed to cross in the arrangement (planar arrangements), and for rooted trees under the constraint that the arrangement is planar and the root is not covered (projective arrangements). We also tackle the unconstrained formulation of MaxLA for free trees. Our efforts have yielded polynomial-time solutions for k-linear trees (0 <= k <= 2) and a 3/2-approximation algorithm. Furthermore, we devise algorithms and derive formulas to calculate the expected value of the cost of bipartite arrangements of bipartite graphs, and planar and projective arrangements of trees, based on new knowledge on how to generate such arrangements uniformly at random. All these algorithms, and others as well, have been packaged into the Linear Arrangement Library (LAL), licensed under the GNU Affero GPL.

    Thesis abstract: This work explores terrain modelling techniques that provide a comprehensive experience in terms of graphical representation, physics interaction and dynamic updates in real-time. In particular, our focus revolves around the creation of a system able to: 1) capture any possible feature we find on terrains, 2) maintain an accurate level of detail, 3) offer rendering and navigation in real-time, 4) include the option of performing dynamic updates in real-time, and 5) support physical interactions of entities also in real-time.Once previous models from the literature are reviewed, two models are proposed that take a digital elevation model as the base structure. The former follows a strategy in which we mimic the geotectonic events we find in nature. The latter uses a sculpting approach with convex polyhedra as a carving tool. To this end, several works are presented.While the first option introduces some gains with limits, the second option is a proposal that accomplishes the five required constraints. On the one hand, it can model tunnels, caves and overhangs, and terrain features can be captured with pixel-perfect accuracy. On the other hand, it is not demanding regarding processing and storage requirements and offers scalability. Finally, rendering, physics and dynamic updates can be performed in real-time.As a result, this work represents a significant contribution, offering an integrated solution capable of addressing the most challenging aspects of dynamic terrains. Our approach introduces a novel terrain model comprising diverse data structures and a suite of algorithms designed to capture a wide range of terrain formations accurately. A scene composed of tens of millions of triangles can be continuously updated to the extent of simulating a completely devastated terrain, rendered, and subjected to real-time physics computations involving tens of thousands of physical entities. The proposed model holds great potential for computer graphic applications, particularly in scenarios such as simulators and games, where dynamic landscapes play a paramount role.

    Thesis abstract: In the last two decades, the use of web Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) has grown exponentially, providing both consumers (software developers) and providers (companies and institutions that expose their organizational data or services) with numerous advantages and facilities. Web APIs allow developers to easily integrate existing services or data into their applications, reducing the time and cost required to build new software. At the same time, by making available their web APIs, providers can increase their customer reach or create a new revenue stream by monetizing the web API. Even though consumers expect web APIs to be steady and well-established, web APIs are prone to continuous changes, evolving several times through their lifecycle. As the use of web APIs continues to grow, the need to evolve them to meet the changing needs of consumers becomes more challenging. However, consumers do not always welcome web API evolution, as the changes might be too frequent or not relevant from their point of view. This discontentment becomes even stronger for the fact that web APIs are exposed over the Internet, meaning that consumers may be forced to upgrade to new web API versions (if providers decide to discontinue the former ones). Knowing the impact changes have on consumers, providers have to strike a balance between not imposing unexpected, frequent changes and providing an up-to-date, maintainable, bug-free web API, that fulfills consumers’ needs. The aim of this research work is to develop a semi-automatic method that enables web API providers to prescribe changes based on their consumers' behavior, as recorded in web API usage logs. We take the position that web API evolution should be mainly usage-based, i.e., the way consumers use web APIs should be one of the main drivers of web API changes. We start with the exploration of web API evolution, by seeing the process from the points of view of both providers and consumers. We identify and classify the changes that often happen to web APIs, and investigate how all these changes are reflected in various artifacts. Building on this classification, we examine different types of usage logs, namely development and production logs, to understand consumers' needs based on their behavior. We detect usage patterns that indicate the presence of usability issues or needs for improvement in the web API and suggest changes that should be implemented in future web API releases. Our approach enables providers to make informed decisions based on usage patterns. By adopting a usage-based approach, providers can ensure that their web APIs continue to meet the evolving needs of their consumers.

    Thesis abstract: Requirements engineering (RE) is fundamental to successful software development, especially in modern, large-scale projects. Efficient management of text-based artefacts is key to accurate elicitation, refinement, and validation of requirements. Despite the industrial trend towards adopting natural language processing (NLP) methods, challenges in their pervasiveness, reliability, scalability, and reusability persist. Moreover, the advent of large language models (LLMs) has set the groundwork for further research in automated document analysis in the field of RE.This thesis explores the integration of NLP methods and tools to automate and enhance RE tasks (NLP4RE) in three document-oriented areas: requirements traceability, requirements analysis for information retrieval, and requirements feedback gathering. For requirements traceability, methods for dependency and duplicate detection in text-based requirements documents are proposed and evaluated. In requirements analysis, a knowledge graph-based approach is developed to create adaptive, crowdsourced repositories of RE-related documents. For requirements feedback gathering, techniques for extracting features from user reviews and analyzing feedback are presented and evaluated.This research is shaped in the context of multiple case and sample studies validated empirically, demonstrating their effectiveness in real-world scenarios. The contributions presented in this thesis entail advancements in streamlining RE tasks and improving the accuracy, efficiency and adoption of NLP4RE tools and methods. Ultimately, this thesis aims to provide novel insights, methodologies and technical contributions to the NLP4RE field.

    Thesis abstract: The study of the colonic volume has strong relevance in gastroenterology and contributes to the diagnosis and research of lowseveritydiseases such as constipation, diarrhea, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. In the context of these affections, the use of invasivetechniques or ionizing imaging is not advisable, and the medical experts opted for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) acquiredwithout contrast administration nor any form of patient preparation to avoid exogenous colon alteration.Specifically, two MRI modalities are of special interest: T2-weighted half-Fourier acquisition single-shot turbo spin echo sequence(T2-HASTE), which allows the segmentation of the colon lumen, and T1-weighted Fat-Sat (T1-FS), where fecal and gas contentscan be distinguished.The colon analysis requires the segmentation of the colon both in T1-FS and T2-HASTE images, which is a cumbersome and timeconsumingprocess when performed manually. Moreover, manual segmentation involves a high degree of uncertainty in the colonboundaries delimitation, which leads to arbitrariness and poor measurement repeatability.This Ph.D. Thesis proposes an end-to-end quasi-automatic framework that comprises all the steps required to accurately segmentthe colon in T2-HASTE and T1-FS images, allowing the study of its morphology and the colonic content distribution. In order to easethe validation of the automated segmentation results, a tool for the synchronized T1-FS/T2-HASTE visualization has also beendesigned.T2-HASTE segmentation is organized as a three-stage pipeline. In the first stage, a custom tubularity filter is run to detect coloncandidate areas. The specialists provide a list of points along the colon trajectory, which are combined with tubularity information tocalculate an estimation of the colon medial path. In the second stage, the colon region of interest is delimited by applying customsegmentation algorithms to detect colon neighboring regions and the fat capsule containing abdominal organs. Finally, within thereduced search space, the segmentation is performed via 3D graph-cuts in a three-stage multigrid approach.T1-FS colon segmentation is based on a non-rigid registration of the T2-HASTE image towards the T1-FS image. The mappingtransformation delivered by the registration is used to translate the T2-HASTE colon segmentation to the T1-FS space. A novelIterative Colon Registration process corrects the registered colon misalignments by employing a mesh deformation approachguided by a probabilistic model. The model provides information about the presence of feces, colonic gas, and the surrounding fat.Each iteration alternates a deformation phase with a shape-preservation phase to counterbalance the lack of boundary informationthat characterizes the regions of the colon containing gas. This process converges into an optimal fit of the colon segmentation inthe T1-FS.The experiments have proven the accuracy and usability of the algorithms, which contributed to the integration of MRI image-basedcolon analysis into the clinical routine.The results imply a substantial step towards a fully automated segmentation, speeding up the acquisition of further data for researchand diagnosis purposes while improving the repeatability of the measurements.

    Thesis abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) is a powerful new paradigm that has the potential to transform the way we live, work, and interact with our surroundings. IoT devices are equipped with sensors, software, and communication capabilities, continuously gather data from physical entities and transmit it over the Internet. These devices and their measurements can be used to understand the world around us and to automate tasks.The IoT is still in its early stages but has already shown great promise. Currently, IoT devices are used to monitor our health, manage our homes, and monitor physical infrastructures, among others. As the IoT develops, we can expect to see even more innovative and groundbreaking applications. The IoT has the potential to revolutionize the way we live and work, and make our world a smarter and more connected place.One of the main features of the IoT is its ability to collect and process data from a variety of sources, convert this data into knowledge, and then use this knowledge to monitor undesirable situations. This monitoring must be done automatically to be practical and be related to the ontological structure of the information being processed to be helpful.In certain scenarios, data communication between devices is straightforward. Devices are connected in the same ecosystem, where agreeing on the communication data format is pretty easy. However, when devices have to communicate information to outsider environments, each manufacturer defines its own data communication format, despite they may be communicating similar concepts. This issue is not adequately addressed in the IoT domain, and information homogenization must be done. These statements lead to a central question: "How can we improve the interoperability of IoT devices that use sensors, actuators, and event rules for the monitoring entities in the real world?". To overcome data heterogeneity, we propose the development of an ontology –a comprehensive and abstract representation of domain concepts and data. This ontology will serve as a foundation for enhancing interoperability among IoT devices by providing a common framework for understanding and exchanging data across diverse systems. Our proposed ontology encompasses a wide range of entity types, including sensors, actuators, and entities representing real-world objects. Sensors gather data from the environment, actuators modify the state of the world, and entities model the physical objects being monitored. The ontology also includes contextualization rules that allow users to define conditions based on sensor data and actuator actions. These rules enable the system to automate monitoring, context gathering, and appropriate responses based on real-time data. Thus generating a wide range of possibilities, so that, different elements from several domains can be specified, depending on the use case chosen by the implementer.In this regard, we propose a working environment, a cloud-based software platform where operators can view and manipulate all the system’s information, developed using a microservices architecture. We focus on real-time data collection to fully automate monitoring, context gathering, and appropriate responses.

    Thesis abstract: The rapid development of consumer-grade virtual reality (VR) systems has changed how users interact within virtualenvironments. This opens up exciting opportunities for various domains, such as education, social interactions, and gaming.However, the current VR technology often provides only head and hand tracking, which significantly restricts the potential foroffering realistic full-body animation to create immersive VR experiences. This is especially problematic for activities in VR thatrequire users to use their whole body, like human factors engineering, fitness, rehabilitation, and training. In addition to the sparsetracking limitation, the field faces many other significant challenges, including the real-time performance requirement, not havingenough VR motion datasets, and challenges regarding how we evaluate these technologies.Therefore, as technical contributions, this thesis presents two novel data-driven solutions for full-body avatar animation in VRfrom sparse tracking data. The first method breaks down the animation process into three parts: body orientation, lower body, andupper body, solving them by different modules. A lightweight neural network is used to estimate the body direction from theHead-Mounted Display (HMD) and controllers. Then, customized Motion Matching finds the motion from a dataset that bestmatches the user's movement, avoiding fixed walking animations. Inverse kinematic solvers are used to animate the upper bodyand to refine the final pose. The second method uses a novel deep-learning framework to reconstruct the full-body motion from thepositions and rotations of six tracking devices without separating different body parts. Once trained, the model takes live datafrom VR devices and outputs an accurately animated full-body avatar that the user can control as their physical body. We alsocaptured several datasets featuring interaction movements and locomotion most relevant to VR avatar animation which have beenmade publicly available.In addition to its technical advancements, this thesis also contributes to a better understanding of user experiences in virtualreality through user studies. Two in-depth user studies have been conducted to evaluate the impact of animation quality andcollision feedback on how users perceive and interact within VR environments. Through objective metrics, subjectiveassessments, and interviews, insights were gained into improving avatar animation and virtual interactions. Findings include thatsparse trackers with high-quality inverse kinematics can match the embodiment of advanced motion capture suits for certain tasksbut fall short for tasks requiring accurate poses. Moreover, our studies indicate that achieving a realistic interaction with othervirtual humans requires not only advanced animation methods but also believable collision feedback, such as inducing participantsto expect that a physical bump against a real person might occur. Together, this research has advanced the state-of-the-art infull-body avatar animation in VR and deepened our understanding of potential improvements in this field.
