What is MENTORFIRST?
MentorFirst is a training program offered by the UPC’s Institute of Educational Sciences (ICE), aimed at doctoral students who wish to begin a career in university teaching.
The program offers training and practical tools to develop teaching competencies, such as the planning, delivery, and assessment of learning activities.
It is an opportunity to complement research training with specific preparation for university teaching and academic career development.
Priority for registration will be given to doctoral candidates holding a pre-doctoral grant or scholarship that entails teaching obligations.
You will receive:
- Mentoring by an experienced academic from your department.
- Assistance from your mentor during teaching practice hours (a minimum of 20 hours is required for certification).
- Basic training in university teaching (1 ECTS = 25 hours). This "Module 1" is part of the teaching and learning training program ("Postgraduate Diploma in University Education in STEAM") offered by the ICE-UPC and meets the legal requirement for new faculty members established by the Organic Law on the University System (LOSU).
- Guidelines for preparing an academic teaching portfolio, which can be used for future academic applications.
Guidance
Supervising doctoral theses is a key task for ensuring research quality and the development of research talent. Beyond expert knowledge in a discipline, supervising a thesis entails skills in leadership, communication, mentoring, and the management of the research process.
This course offers tools and strategies to strengthen doctoral supervision and address the key challenges involved in guiding doctoral candidates. Through a practical and participatory approach, it addresses academic, methodological, and relational aspects of thesis supervision, fostering a rigorous, effective process focused on the holistic development of researchers in training.
